Spring Tunic

I did it! My first top! And just in time, too, to enter Spring Top Week.

This was the most challenging sewing project I have ever completed. It is the Baby Doll Tunic from the book Sew Teen. As I mentioned before, I thought it was strange that I couldn’t find a single reference to anyone making this top. Now I know why – several key measurements and details in the instructions are incorrect. I know this because I followed them step-by-step, and the first top I made was wildly out of proportion. So much for “the perfect guide for first-time sewers”! I was pretty disappointed at first, but after putting it away for a few days I decided to take it apart and try to figure it out on my own, with much better results! Despite the setbacks, I learned a lot, and am glad I gave it another try. 🙂

Notes about the pattern: Despite specifying the “bust measurement” (and showing how to measure for it), this particular pattern is actually asking for the underbust/ribcage measurement. Big difference! I also noticed other instances – like writing 10 “centimeters” instead of 10 “millimeters”, and having certain steps and diagrams out of order. I couldn’t understand attaching the bias-binding at all, so I just had to figure it out from the photos. I also chose to use 3/4″ elastic and made the ties a tad thinner.

Ouch!

One week ago today Chloe fell off our front steps and right into the rose bush. It was her worst accident yet. The right side of her face was a jumble of bloody cuts and scrapes, including a deep one on her forehead and her nose. After a quick phone call to the advice nurse, she suggested we bring Chloe in to see if she needed stitches. Thankfully, she did not.

Looking at her now, I am amazed at how quickly her wounds are healing. I fear she may have some scarring, but it is early to tell, and I hope hope hope that she won’t. I did learn something important, that Neosporin is not recommended for children under 2 (as it states on the label), mostly because an allergic reaction to the ingredient neomycin can develop if introduced too early. A better choice for toddler treatment is a double antibiotic ointment, like Polysporin. So far it seems to be working pretty well, although I’m considering a little vitamin e oil now that it has been a week. Hopefully most of the scabs will be diminished before we see the grandparents next week!

Hide-a-bee

A while back, I was flipping through an old Family Fun magazine where I read about a game called Hide-a-bee. Basically, they painted a rock to look like a bee and then “hid” it in plain site for the little kids to find. The first child who found the bee got to hide it for the next round, and so on. I was charmed by the simple concept (even for a toddler to grasp) and the inexpensive painted rock art. I made a few for Chloe this week (including a hide-a-bug ladybug). Its portability makes it handy for our upcoming flight, and if we lose it, hey, it’s just a rock!

Rocks and Water

On Saturday we drove down to Eugene to see my photograph hanging at the Jacobs Gallery. There were some beautiful works of art presented, and if we had that kind of money I’m sure we would have bought one or two of our favorites. Afterwards we got  lunch at the Saturday Market and then headed up river to one of David’s favorite fishing spots.

We ended up at one of the resevoirs not far from the waterfalls. The water was so cold and the gravel prickly, but that didn’t stop Chloe from wanting to play. Rather than fight it, I took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her pants, and let her go. We were high in the mountains, so the water was fairly calm and clean (not like the dirty lakes and rivers of the city). I like how she looks so serious in these photos – having fun is hard work sometimes!

Make your own bean bag chair

Check out this cool bean bag chair by Joanna at Stardust Shoes. I never thought I’d say this about a bean bag chair, but I think this one is so fun. I wish I had one like it for Chloe’s room. She would totally dig it. Not only does she love to climb on chairs in general, but also to get in and out of boxes, bounce on cushions, and land in piles of dirty clothes on the floor. Wouldn’t playing with an oversize bean bag be like all those things?

Joanna offers both an adult-sized (shown above) and child-sized pdf tutorial, so technically I could make one myself. Maybe I will someday. Right now I’m stuck with a halfway finished spring top. I can’t seem to figure out the next step, and I’m not sure how best to move forward (Sandy, maybe I can ichat you and hold the instructions up to the camera?). Also strange is that I can’t find a single reference of anyone sewing this top, or any photos on Flickr or anywhere else. Maybe because it was written for teenagers and there aren’t any teenager-sewing-bloggers? Oh well. I might just try and wing it.

Kooza

David and I went to see Cirque du Soliel’s Kooza this evening. Chloe stayed with good friends of ours. I thought my mind would drift to her often, but instead my attention was riveted to the performers on-stage (and in the audience – at one point we had to stand and let a comedic pickpocket through our row, followed by two energetic policeman).  It was wonderful – a fine balance of storytelling, humor, and remarkable stunts. Pretty much action-packed eye candy backed by live music. Our only disappointment (if you can even call it that), was seeing only two out of the three contortionists, but we were no less amazed. A ticket costs a small fortune, but worth it, especially if you’ve never been. Kooza will be showing in Portland through May 23rd.

Smocked sundress

Chloe in her new dress, trying to accessorize with her daddy’s grungy fishing hat

After writing the last post, I remembered that I still hadn’t shared photos of Chloe’s new smocked sundress from Weekend Sewing. I finished it right before Easter, and really love it. I honestly can’t believe how easy it was. I can see how sewing with elastic thread can seem daunting, but there really is nothing to it. Plus, there is a helpful video of Heather Ross giving a demonstration on Martha Stewart. I had already read through the instructions and set my mind to making it though, so the video was a lucky bonus.

Eventually I plan on making myself a top in similar fashion, but I’d like to make another kind of top first. Plus, Heather offers a free adult pattern in pdf called the Mendocino Sundress that is similar to the child’s smocked sundress in her book. Hmm, maybe I should just go for the dress and forget the top for now. The material would make a nice dress…

Stumped

Ever since making this Blossom Blouse for Chloe, I’ve been thinking about making a top for myself. I already have the fabric, but I can’t seem to make up my mind on which top to make. There is a surprising amount of factors that weigh on this decision. For example, I’d rather not buy a pattern for this initial attempt. I’d also like it to be easy enough to muddle through with minimal frustration, in a style I’d actually wear, and look decent with the large floral print of the fabric I’ve chosen. And so on.

A few contenders right now are this Spring Ruffle Top Tutorial, the Strapless Belted Tunic from One-Yard Wonders, and the Baby Doll Tunic from Sew Teen (laugh if you want). Also, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the 2010 Spring Top Week entries – the three pictured above are a few styles I could see wearing myself (in different prints). I guess I need to get sewing if I want to enter my own!

Self-portrait plus, week 14

Am I too old to do cartwheels? My wrists think so. It isn’t like it used to be, that’s for sure. Back in the day, it was effortless. Now I just end up feeling dizzy. I better get practicing if I want to be the one to teach Chloe how it’s done. 🙂

Feeling sick

Chloe was sick again today. We stayed home and missed our usual outings. I was especially bummed to miss my workout class. I waited until the last minute to call and let them know that Chloe wouldn’t be in childcare today. I must have been hoping that she’d miraculously get better, but she was still sneezing rivers of snot and coughing as I spoke to the receptionist. Money down the drain, but the last thing I want to do is subject her to more stress, or get other children sick.

Now that Chloe is more mobile and participating in several activities and venues with lots of other children, she has gotten sick several times. Unfortunate since she spent her entire first year in almost perfect health. Now, despite my arsenal of sani-wipes and hand washings, she still catches the occasional bug. There is not much more I can do except sequester her at home (which would likely be even more unhealthy in a multitude of social and developmental ways).

Last night we made a trip to Target to re-stock a few trusty supplies that I’ve come to rely on when Chloe gets sick. Being a baby, I can’t give her the same treatment I give myself – no calming Throat Coat tea, or preventive doses of Airborne or Emergen-C. For Chloe, my go-to items are Infants’ Tylenol, Vick’s BabyRub, and California Baby Cold & Flu Bubble Bath. We also picked up one of those boxes of Kleenex with lotion and vitamin E, since I’ve been swiping her nose with every other breath. I use both the Tylenol and Vick’s sparingly, but I love the California Baby Bubble Bath. The scent of eucalyptus is very soothing and mild and it makes great bubbles. It also comes with a bubble wand. But most importantly, it rates a practically perfect score on the cosmetic safety database and it’s company has signed the compact for safe cosmetics. I’m not über diligent, but I like to choose our products wisely.

What do you do when you or your child is sick? Do you have any products to recommend, or soothing rituals to help make things better? I’d love to know!
