My little mischief maker

Chloe is a bonafide mischief maker. Like any nineteen-month-old she’s curious and active, so a little bit of mischief is to be expected. But lately, I’m beginning to wonder if she isn’t a little over the top…

Take this photo for instance. You can see that mealtimes are one of our biggest challenges. Those toddler bowls that are supposed to suction to the tray? They don’t work very well. The mess itself is bad, but I really wish she wouldn’t rub the food in her hair.

You may have seen this photo before, or read this post about how Chloe has a thing for bras. I like this “Oops you caught me again” look on her face.

However, it doesn’t stop her from giving chase when asked to hand them over.

And this one takes the cake. Somehow she found a packet in the bathroom, peeled the paper off and stuck it on her shirt. I kid you not. Imagine my utter astonishment when she came running out to show me. OMG! It’s almost like she knows!

I ask you, is this what you would call a normal amount of mischief?!

A wedding to remember

What a wedding! We spent last week preparing for, and enjoying lots of festivities to celebrate the marriage of David’s younger brother, Andrew to his beautiful wife, Aundrea. It was certainly the grandest, most formal wedding I’ve ever attended. Everything from the ceremony, dresses, flowers, music, food and special touches (Horse drawn carriages for all guests! White and gold Grand Marnier cake! Photo booth!) was a feast for the senses, and of course, the happy couple was radiant. I wish I had photos to share, but as a bridesmaid it just wasn’t appropriate for me to be lugging my big camera around. I hope the photographer got a good shot of me in my bridesmaid dress (aubergine floor-length Vera Wang with train and custom-made gold embroidered waistband and sash designed by the bride) and David in his tuxedo, because it is unlikely we’ll ever be as well-dressed again!

So now it is back to real life for us. We flew back this afternoon and it feels good to be home (except for the mountain of tasks that are awaiting). Happily, it will be a short work week for David and then we’ll have a four-day holiday weekend to spend together. We thought about taking another family camping trip, but now we’re thinking some good old-fashioned down time might be in order. We’ll see what the weekend brings. Meanwhile I’ll be resting my sore feet – it isn’t every day I get to dance the night away!

Girls Suck at Video Games

My husband sent me this link today. At first I didn’t know what to think, but by the end I realized there does seem to be some truth to it.

Kalaloch

Ruby Beach

After writing that post about Bree Tanner, I thought of some photos I took of Kalaloch during our memorial weekend camping trip. What does Kalaloch have to do with the Twilight series? Nothing, except that it is just 30 minutes south of Forks, Washington. For being so close in proximity to this popular Twilight fan destination, Kalaloch was no busier than I’d expect for this area of the Olympic National Park. No surprise, but it was cloudy the entire time we visited, and no, we didn’t see any vampires. 🙂

BTW – A friend of mine wrote an interesting post about visiting Forks as a Twilight fan, including great photos. You can read it here.

Self-portrait plus, week 22

I am getting so behind on these self-portraits! I’m wondering if I’m even going to make a year of them as I had planned. However, I do have ones for the past couple weeks, I just need to find time to post them once I return.

Meanwhile, this is a self-portrait that includes the bride (second from left) and bridesmaids during the bachelorette belly dancing lesson. The instructor, Dahlia, is in the center. This was great fun, and I’ll just say that it isn’t as easy as it looks!

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

I just finished reading Stephanie Meyer’s novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. I’m sure almost everyone now is familiar with the author of the Twilight series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was kind of weird reading from my computer monitor, though, instead of from a book. I don’t know how Kindle users do it. It just doesn’t feel right. Or maybe it is different if you can take it with you, instead of reading from a computer desk. Anyhow, it was a good, quick read, and certainly gives a unique, alternate perspective. I’m not sure it would be as good if you haven’t read Eclipse, but if you have, you’ll find the pieces fit together nicely (except where the story refers to Edward as a redhead. What’s that about?).

From now through July 5th, the author is making the novella available to read for free, which is how I read it. Good thing, too, because my husband already gives me grief about the other 4 books taking up our limited shelf space.

Post-It Draw It Game

I have always liked Pictionary, so its no surprise that I find myself “drawn” to Post-it’s online “Draw It Game.” I’m not one to play facebook apps or video games, in general, but put me in this virtual room of strangers and I can waste time like nobody’s business. You don’t even need to sign up. Just play with the guest username they provide. Watch out though. Despite the admonishment to “doodle clean”  in case young kids are present, it doesn’t stop morons from drawing x-rated junk when it is their turn. Or cussing in the comments. Otherwise, though, it really is simple, good fun whenever you happen to have a spare minute.

To Potty or Not to Potty, continued…

(continued from previous post)

Ah, the fourth day. I guess I need not tell you how jumpy I was everytime I thought I smelled a little something, or if Chloe said anything that even sounded like “poopy”. I just didn’t want to miss the opportunity like I did the day before. However, this led to several uneventful trips to sit on the potty, especially after Chloe realized she could just say it and I’d practically race her to the bathroom. But it was all for naught. She didn’t go poopy even once that day. I mean, what are the chances?

Then there was the fifth day. Similar thing – she’d say it and we’d both run into the bathroom. Nothing. I gave her a squeeze packet of Plum Organics Just Prunes to see if it would help. That is one thing about the new vitamin/iron supplement. It sort of backs up the works. Good thing the doctor warned me to have prunes and pears on hand. Well, the prunes did their job. Chloe came to me and said “Mama!”, but then… nothing.

I said “Chloe, are you poopy?”

She replied “Poopy!”

“Do you want to go poopy in the potty?” I asked.

“No.”

“Are you sure? Let’s go poopy in the potty!” and I try and usher her toward the bathroom.

“No!”

“C’mon honey, let’s just try…”

“No, no!” Obstinate stance. Disgruntled look.

And there you have it. After all that, she did not want to go poopy in the potty. Can you imagine?! So much for thinking I might be getting off easy. But, then again, I do think she is too young (her little legs don’t even reach the ground when sitting properly on the chair). Plus, I’m not ready to deal with public toilets and needing to go once we’re away from home. Speaking of that, we’ll be leaving shortly for a two week trip to Colorado, so the timing is certainly not ideal. Maybe we’ll try again in another few months, or when Chloe turns two.

I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂

To potty, or not to potty – that is the question

Is Chloe to young to start potty training? That is a question I’ve been asking myself lately. For the past three days in a row, Chloe has come to me and said “Poopy!” and then I’ve watched her bear down and go (in her diaper). The first day it came as a big surprise. The second day, I was surprised again, yet prepared to act excited and pleased. The third morning, I went out and bought a new potty. I had no expectations, but thought I might as well be prepared.

The third day was yesterday. When Chloe came to tell me, well, let’s just say I could have handled it better. First, I waited too long, but I wanted to be sure. Then, when I was sure, I took her to the bathroom, tried to whip off her diaper, and sit her on the seat. Unfortunately, one side of the diaper got stuck. There was already poop in it (because I waited), and I had to use the other hand to keep it inside (and limit the smear factor). Anyway, I was too late and it was awkward for both of us. Doubly so when I finally got the diaper off and Chloe reached her hand to see what was going on where her diaper had been. Yuck. Chloe looked at her browned fingers and learned a new word: “Dirty!”.

No pooping was done in the potty that day. And Chloe was out running around with her daddy the second time she went. I’ll have to remember to ask if she warned him, too.

Today is the fourth day.

Will she be as consistent today? She sure loves sitting on her new potty and has since randomly said “Poopy!” several times yesterday in reference to the chair. Will I be faster? Should I even try? What if she does (miraculously) learn to poopy in the potty, doesn’t that mean that I’ll have to find a potty whenever she needs to go? If I told her to go in her diaper, wouldn’t that be sending a mixed message? On one hand, I’m pleased she’s begun to recognize her bodily functions, but on the other hand it adds a complication that I don’t feel ready for.

I also have a confession to make. I already had a potty that I bought on craigslist soon after Chloe was born (top left image). I really liked the modern design of it, but it was used a little harder than I originally thought and I never cleaned it like I knew I should. It is sitting in our shed. Then, a friend recommended a  sit-on-top model, actually a 3-in-one, that was working well for her son, and I thought that might be better (center image). So that is what I bought. Now we have two (or three, really, because I couldn’t decide and bought a third one, too, which I plan on returning. I’m such a dork.).

So, that is where I am. Now I wait to see what today might bring for poopy time…

Note: Babies R Us is currently offering $3 off all potty chairs over $20, plus an extra $5 off if you get the coupon book.

Farmer’s market

Yay for the farmer’s market! We went on our first visit of the year today. As usual, it was great fun wandering the many stalls, meeting up with friends, watching our kids stain their faces with fresh berries, and basking in what felt like the first real sun of the season. Also, Chloe is now old enough to enjoy the fountain, and Lorenzo was good enough to show her how it’s done. They had a grand time.

Maybe it was all that sun, because I feel wiped out! Thankfully, we got the last of our veggie starts in the ground today. Now we just wait for the delicious bounty that is sure to come (that is, if the slugs don’t get to them first!).

Rain forest, detail

I was looking through our recent Lake Quinault camping photos again and noticed that I didn’t include any of the detail shots. It’s easy to be bowled over by the big picture (so green! giant trees! lots of rain!), but a lot of what makes the rain forest such a special place are the little things – the carpets of clover, the furry mosses, the delicate unfurling of a fern frond – all those tiny lives being forged out of the clouds and mist. It’s amazing. I think its worth a second look, don’t you?
