Better

I think Chloe has survived the worst of her symptoms, although she is still somewhat snotty and has a (slightly less severe) cough. We’ve even gotten her to ingest something other than Children’s Advil and PediaSure Shakes. Whew. This was the worst sickness she’s had so far, which all-in-all is manageable, since we know others who have had extreme emergency room visits with their sick toddlers. Meanwhile, no classes or activities, probably for the rest of the week, which is a shame, since Chloe loves her dance class.

Quick, Free Art

Poor Chloe is sick right now. She’s got it all – fever, horrible cough, puffy eyes, altered voice, runny nose, vomitting… It’s been pretty rough, especially at night. David took the first two nights sleeping in her room and then I took last night. She wakes up a lot, usually due to coughing fits that seem to work her in a frenzy of frantic crying and more coughing, which just makes everything worse. We’re pretty much taking it easy right now.

On a happier note, while at home this weekend I decided to finally re-fresh the art in our set of living room picture frames. For almost a year they’ve held abstract finger-paintings done in one of Chloe’s baby art classes. They were nice for a while, but I was feeling ready for something new.

Since getting pregnant this time around I haven’t felt at all creative, so I started looking on Etsy for possibilities. However, I didn’t want to spend very much or wait very long to get them. Then I remembered the web site Feed Your Soul: The Free Art Project. Basically, every month an artist provides a free, downloadable print. Isn’t that nice? I chose four (actually five, since I couldn’t decide between two), re-sized them to fit 8 x 10″ and then sent them off via internet to get printed at my local Target by one-hour photo processing. If I had a decent printer it would have been instant gratification, but I wasn’t even willing to wait for shipping (even though I prefer matte paper – Target only does one-hour processing in glossy). Each print was a bargain $2.89. Gotta love free art!

Basic Maternity

I know pretty much nothing about style and fashion. Either I like the look of something, or I don’t. It is that simple. What is most important to me is comfort. If it isn’t comfortable, I (likely) won’t wear it. My husband often laments that many of his favorite clothes on me end up in the Goodwill pile, because they don’t fit or feel right. And that causes another problem, because sometimes I feel guilty and end up holding on to lots of these things. Meanwhile, they just take up closet space in the hope that I might “someday” wear them again – which pretty much never happens.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there has been an explosion of pregnancies? I see pregnant people everywhere. I have pregnant neighbors, have several pregnancies within my extended family, have friends with pregnant friends, read blogs with pregnant moms… One particular maternity trend that I am seeing a lot of is the super-fitted pants known as “jeggings” (read Melissa’s post here, or Justine’s post here). However, I am firmly in the anti-jegging camp. Give me boot-cut or straight legs any day. Plus, they look better with my daily Danskos. It might be different if I wore flats or dress shoes, but I rarely do, so there you go.

Style aside, I’ll just say that my absolute favorite, most comfortable (and budget-friendly!) maternity outfit right now is the Maternity Roll-Panel Yoga Pants and the Maternity Wrap-Front Fleece Hoodie from Old Navy (shown above). I have a pair of the pants from the last stage of pregnancy with my first child, but I saw them on sale for $15 recently and decided to get another pair, this time a size smaller which feels more comfortable right now. I hesitated on getting the matching hoodie (even though it was also on sale for only $19), since I already own a nice maternity sweater-jacket (like the ivory one shown here, but in black) and a white zip-hoodie, but now I’m glad I bought it. The sweater coat always feels scratchy, and the white one gets dirty so easily (now that I have a toddler to help me with that). Of course, I’m lucky that the little work I do, I can do from home, and really only need to look presentable while running errands, or taking Chloe to classes or playdates. I can only imagine that outside-the-home working moms have it harder, but then again, maybe it is nice to have a reason to shower and get dressed in the morning. For now, I just consider myself lucky to get away with a limited maternity wardrobe.

Mid-February Update

Well, it’s been a while since my last post. Sometimes I find it hard to start back up, so I thought I’d just bite the bullet with some random updates…

  • We finally broke ground on our addition a couple days ago (the 17th). Unfortunately the wet weather combined with our softened clay ground caused lots of problems for the excavation vehicles. Our only option to move forward was to pay extra for gravel to be delivered and spread along the side of the house as a make-shift driveway. Not what we wanted to hear during the first (and second) day of the project, but we’re still optimistic that other parts of the construction will move on as planned.
  • At twenty-three weeks pregnant I’ve already gained 20 pounds. Sigh.
  • David caught a wild steelhead while fishing the Necanicum a couple weeks ago. He was so happy, and I was touched that he thought to call and tell me about it right afterwards while the excitement was still fresh. Trout has been his specialty, but he’s found steelheading much more challenging, and his perseverance is paying off.

  • Chloe has enjoyed several special outings outside of her usual classes this week, including a fun toddler Valentine’s Day party hosted by Lorenzo’s grandmother, a mid-week mother-daughter lunch at Noah’s Bagels, and a fun ride on the Jantzen Beach carousel with her friend Anjali, followed by a chocolate ice cream cone all to herself.

Sand and water

A couple weekends ago we had Daddy all to ourselves. This particular day we joined him for a brief afternoon on the river, and then a few hours at Cannon beach. It had been a long time since we’d done something like this, and we had such a great time. Chloe loved playing in the water and especially the sand, despite the cold temperature.

I wish we could do this kind of thing more often, like we used to, but there are so many reasons we don’t – I’ve been so tired this pregnancy, or David has to work the weekend, or we need to take care of house-related errands or chores… And honestly, Chloe is becoming a handful. At two, she is naturally more independent and willful (and sometimes downright naughty!). There are days I can’t even bear to take her for groceries, and have put it off, if it just isn’t a good day. I wish it wasn’t that way.

I wish getting out of the house was easier… that everyday could be spent somewhere stimulating and fun. But now I’m okay if its just a few times a week, not counting her dance class or her morning at baby preschool. And when Baby Two comes along… well, I think its going to be tough for a while. David said something along the lines of wishing we could fast-forward through that first year, and though I see his point, this will be my only other baby. The last time I’ll get to experience the wonder of a newborn and all the sweetness that entails. And I want to share that with Chloe in a good way. I want them to love each other, to get along, to be friends. But I won’t be able to help them do that if I’m exhausted all the time, like I am now. So, when things just happen to work out, like it did on this special day, I am that much more grateful.
