This was a fun project. Passing a pile of discarded household items in my neighborhood, I spied a deflated football. I don't know anything about football really, but I recognized the Wilson Duke as a good quality ball, so I picked it up.

Was surprised to find a rebuild kit online for about $10, from a small biz out of Alabama who are obsessed with footballs -- new bladder, lacing, and lacing tool.

Then studied videos about how to re-lace. Fun project, no crawling on my hands and knees, wrenching my back or busting my fingers.

Inspecting it I see the ball is stamped with a big "K." Research indicates that this is an NFL "K" ball, used in NFL games for kicking plays (kickoffs, punts, extra points). The "15-4" on the right side indicates this is from week 15 of the season, K-ball #4 for that game. I can't, however, ascertain what season or what team. Maybe a sports shop can help me.

For now I have a nice football for my mantle.

PS: all Wilson Dukes still made by hand in Ada Ohio, tiny town near Lima, northwest of Columbus, and home to Ohio Northern University -- I knew a guy who went to law school there.

The task of war
One does well to examine the Song of Roland (the French, XIth century, chanson de geste) before jumping to conclusions about war. I particularly recommend Scott Moncrieff’s translation (1919), which had an introduction by G. K. Chesterton that has been anthologized elsewhere. He neither glorifies nor condemns war, and actually, neither did Roland in the “splendidly inconclusive conclusion.” War contains both good and evil characters and events, and is never finished in this world. Any final victory must wait patiently on God. So long as there are insane barbarians (the present regime in Iran offers an unambiguous example) they will have to be fought. It is inappropriate to “make peace” with such a vicious and deceitful enemy. And when there is fighting, there are casualties. The Lord — and Christ is not a milquetoast — does not require us to omit this task, and did not condemn it in His Bible. Those who fight for the right, deserve honour; those who insist on “peace, peace” regardless of circumstances are cowards who deserve contempt.
It is sad that there are people, even Catholics, who don’t understand this.

Probably should go read the Song of Roland (translation by Jesse Crosland), but I probably won't because it is 78 pages long.

You may heard that Isreali Defense Forces (the IDF) occupied the ancient Beaufort Castle in Lebanon. I like castles so I go looking for pics. I quickly realize what I want is a 3D view of the place. Google Maps used to deliver that, but that facility (ability) has now been shunted over to Google Earth and response time on Google Earth is abysmal. The 3D view on Google Maps was great, you could pan and tilt to your heart's content and the view on the screen would pretty much keep up with you. 3D view on Google Earth is like that ol' hound dog from Saturday morning cartoons who can't be bother to get up much less fetch anything. What was his name? Droopy?

How about a video? Ask YouTube for Beaufort Castle and all you get is news reports about the Israelis and the only information about the castle is what you get is in the first line of the Wikipedia page.

The IDF has a video which gives you a good view of the castle. Parts of this video have been borrowed (stolen?) by everyone and their mother including Hezbollah, which I thought was pretty weird, but maybe that's just the world today.

Anyway, I looked around and I think I found four views of the castle from the four cardinal directions. Put that together with the video and you might get an idea of how this place is laid out.

I'm thinking that everything we have built are all devices to expand the reach of the most savage animals on the planet. Humans, shoot, all living things are almost infinitely complex. No matter how much we have learned about the human body, we have only scratched the surface. Everything we have figured out is like a cheat code to get us past some obstacle. Someday, maybe, we will understand it all, but I suspect it will be more than one person can comprehend. We might need a hive mind to be able to really understand it all. Some people might be okay with being a member of hive mind, but I suspect most people won't be. Or maybe I overestimate the desire for independent thought.

I've been hearing the argument about capitalism versus socialism since forever. It occurs to me that the big problem with capitalism is that it makes no provision for anyone but the winners. As we develop new technologies, all those who learned a trade under the old ways will find themselves out of a job. Some of the new kids will learn the new ways and be incorporated into the capitalist hive, but because they are more productive, the hive won't need as many of them, so all the excluded are going to be pushed out to the edges. Problem lately is that productivity has been improving faster so we have new waves of technology constantly rolling over the landscape. These wave went from 10,000 years (think fire and ax) to 1,000 years (stone buildings) to 100 years (sailing ships) to ten years (rockets and satellites) to one year (smart phones) to monthly (I can barely keep up) to daily (I'm swamped) to hourly (we're all swept away).

All this talk getting rid of billionaires isn't helping. Take a billion dollars from one person and distribute it to ten million people and each person gets $100, which might buy a tank of gas and, if you're lucky, a six pack of beer. And a week later, where are you? Howling for another billionaire. You would need 50 billionaires to get everyone $100 a week for a year. That ain't gonna work.

We've seen that welfare doesn't really work. Giving money to the poor has just given us a permanent underclass. The biggest problem is that it is very difficult to organize a group of people into a productive operation. The problem is not that we have a shortage of organizers. We have plenty of organizers doing non-productive things, like running scam calling centers, or defrauding the government. To build a productive organization you need an idea that is a least plausible, and someone who is willing to take the gamble that it will pay off. It might work out and it might not, but someone has to be willing to try.

But all this fussing about jobs and housing and war is just avoiding the elephant in the room - the umpteen zillion old folks on social security and Medicare. All I can see is that inflation is going to continue to increase. I suspect it might be ten years before the rate starts going up monthly. About then the rate will start going up exponentially and within months we'll be using trillion dollar bank notes to buy groceries. That's when people will start using the Chinese Yen or Crypto-bit strings.

In the show she is a cute, bright pixie, member of a wealthy family. I mean we don't really care about the peasants do we? She's basically a 19th century Nancy Drew, using her wits to solve a murder in each episode, and or course exonerating the falsely charged fool who has gotten arrested.

19th century technology is in evidence: she has a typewriter, she trades a priceless Ming vase for a bicycle, the concept of using fingerprints to identify a person is known, though not commonly accepted. And the prosecutor's office has a volumetric glove, which is basically a mechanical lie detector.

The first scientific lie detector test was invented by Cesare Lombrosso in 1895. This was known as the Volumetric Glove. The subject's hand was placed in a container of water. I'm not quite sure why I am doing this. I got started and it seems I can keep doing it. Some people may like it. Getting today's, or rather tomorrow's, batch together took a lot longer than usual. Some days I pull up YouTube and I will find a dozen listable videos in five minutes. Some days hours go by without a single one hitting my trigger. On days like today I start to wonder if I have seen all the good videos and there just aren't any more. That thought, of course, is ridiculous. There are too many people thinking too many thoughts for the supply of videos worth posting to dry up completely. Or it just might be that for the two hours I spent this morning I wasn't fully awake. Fifteen minutes after lunch was enough to fill my basket. Maybe lunch had something to do with it.

The Martin M-130 was a quad-engined commercial flying boat designed and produced in 1935 by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland, for Pan American Airways. Intended to fly transpacific flights, three airframes were built: the China Clipper, the Philippine Clipper and the Hawaii Clipper. A similar flying boat design called the Martin 156 and named Russian Clipper, was later built for the Soviet Union; it had a larger wing (giving it greater range) and twin vertical stabilizers.
Martin named them the Martin Ocean Transports, but to the public they were the China Clippers, a name that became a generic term for Pan Am's large flying boats - including, retroactively, the smaller Sikorsky S-42 (first flown in 1931) and larger Boeing 314 (first flown in 1938).
All three aircraft were lost while in service. Hawaii Clipper disappeared in 1938 on a flight over the Pacific, Philippine Clipper flew into a mountain in poor conditions in 1943, and finally in 1945 China Clipper broke up during landing at Trinidad and Tobago. In their time, they blazed trails as one of the first aircraft types to operate transpacific routes (some of the longest airline routes at the time) and also served as transports during World War II.
