May Gardener wrote:How do you determine the moisture level percentage for things you have dehydrated yourself?

I tell by how easily things break. A well dehydrated food should have no bendiness or flexibility to it generally, unless it is a fatty food. If you were to grind it to a powder it would be relatively doable.

Dry goods can be degraded by air, especially humid air, and one method of keeping them dry and safe from oxidation is to use mylar bags. These bags are airtight and often come in combination with oxygen absorbers, ensuring a longer shelf life for dry food items. They are also effective for keeping bugs and other pests away, as they provide a barrier that insects and animals can’t penetrate. Often, people have many doubts regarding such bags. Here we have tried to answer four important questions asked by such people;

What Thickness is Recommended for Using Mylar Bags?

The standard thickness recommended by experts is 5 mils. This thickness ensures that the bag is durable and can protect your food from any environmental pollutants like moisture and oxygen. However, the thickness may vary depending on what type of food you are preserving and how long you plan to store it. For example, if you are storing food for longer periods of time, a thicker mylar bag would be more beneficial.

How Do I Seal Food Storage Bags?

The best way to keep the contents of mylar bags safe is to use heat sealers. You can use either a standard hair straightening iron or a specialized heat sealer to effectively and securely close the top of your food storage bag. Heat sealing is a simple and efficient method for ensuring that your food stays secure and safe in the Mylar bag. To start, carefully insert the open end of the bag into the heat sealer and press down firmly to form a tight seal.

Recommended Moisture Level for Food Storage

Moisture-rich foods shouldn’t be stored in Mylar bags. It is important to monitor the moisture level of food stored in Mylar bags. Generally, the moisture level should be below 10%, but it is best to aim for a lower level of 5-6%. Storing food in Mylar bags with a moisture level that is too high can lead to mold growth, insect infestations, and even food poisoning.

On the other hand, some people such as Alan Bergo have used vacuum sealing bags as a way of fermenting vegetables. I’m not sure I would, though, as microplastics may be an issue there.

How to Safely Store Mylar Bags?

Mylar bags with food can be stored safely with proper care and attention to the environmental conditions of the storage area. Keep them in a plastic or metal container in a dark area away from moisture and sunlight.

I’m sorry you are having that issue. It is getting so much harder to avoid.

What about making a thread here?

Most alliums are fully edible, in that all parts can be eaten so long as they are tender. Not tender parts can be made into stock (as in the case of onion skin).
You can harvest green garlic right now—it’s quite tasty—though only so practical if you grow the garlic perennially, letting them expand year after year to grow a substantial patch.

I love using garlic and onion leaves too—the whole plant is quite edible. Garlic scapes are also starting to make an appearance and they are delicious.
Excellent new album from Carling & Will, “Oh, Mongoose”—mostly instrumental banjo music with a few singing. A few of my favorite songs below.

I have never heard of cooking in a bed but it sounds like an excellent idea! I shall have to try it some time.

I was told that upright bass strings in particular that are made of gut, are longer lasting than modern bass strings. The upkeep apparently is an occasional sanding and oiling to keep them in good condition.

This may not hold entirely for smaller instruments with thinner strings where there is comparatively more surface area and more ways things can break. But good to know.
