Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to determine the level of proficiency of students in analyzing the novel of Dr. Jose Rizal, particularly El Filibusterismo, as well as the challenges and experiences they encountered in reading and examining the text. The respondents of the study were ninety-four (94) Grade 10 learners. The research employed a combined qualitative and quantitative methodology. In the qualitative phase, interviews were utilized to identify the challenges and experiences of the students, while in the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was administered to measure their proficiency in analyzing the novel. The findings revealed that the students exhibited only a moderate level of proficiency in analyzing the novel, especially in the areas of vocabulary, characters, setting, and events. The study also confirmed that unsupported assumptions are not acceptable, as there were significant differences in the level of analysis based on the respondents’ characteristics. Among the major challenges faced by the students were lack of interest in the Filipino subject, difficulty in understanding the text, insufficient parental support, and the burden of household responsibilities that limited their study time. As a recommendation, teachers should implement various strategies and techniques in teaching to better motivate students to engage actively in reading and analyzing literary works.
