Abstract
Coherence is the principle that allows patterns in nature to persist and develop interior structure. A pattern remains when the forces that hold it together act more strongly and more quickly than the forces that would disperse it. This balance begins with a simple act of matching. An electron occupies an orbital when its form fits the symmetry of the available state. Atoms bind through the same relation. Matching leads to binding. Binding leads to stability. Stability introduces continuity across time.
A stable system begins to restore itself toward its previous configuration. This restoration creates self preference. The system now maintains its own identity through cycles of correction and renewal. These cycles form interior time. Interior time becomes richer as systems coordinate multiple processes across different intervals. Networks of activity integrate signals and create layered fields of continuity.
Awareness appears when interior time begins to relate to its own unfolding. The system holds the pattern that carries it forward and also holds a relation to that pattern. This creates self reference. Conscious experience arises when self reference becomes continuous and stable. The system experiences its own presence because it has developed a coherent interior that can sustain reflection.
This sequence shows how matter, life and consciousness follow from a single principle. Matching creates structure. Structure creates stability. Stability creates interior time. Interior time creates awareness. The world becomes intelligible through this progression. Coherence shapes every level of organization and reaches its fullest expression in conscious experience.
