Abstract -/- Holor Calculus I–III introduced a geometric and dynamical framework on a dual-torus "pearl" manifold of interiority and exteriority, together with projected flows and admissibility operators for learning, retrieval, and ethical simulation. Those volumes worked in an effectively Abelian regime: holor composition and projected flows were staged so that, whenever admissible, the order of compatible operations did not materially affect the outcome. -/- In this paper we develop the non-Abelian extension of holor calculus and show how it explains order-sensitive (...) phenomena in learning systems, holarchic traversal, and ethical simulators. We equip the holor manifold with a G-valued connection one-form A and curvature F = dA + A \wedge A, turning the pearl into a connection-bearing bundle. Holor fields are now sections of this bundle, and learning and traversal become coupled flows of both holor content H and connection A. -/- The total energy functional of Holor Calculus II–III is enriched by a curvature term, so that curvature and holonomy become first-class dynamical quantities. Non-zero curvature encodes path dependence: the same sequence of formal "keys" applied in different orders leads to inequivalent final states. -/- We show how this manifests as ramified holarchic flows, curriculum dependence in learning, and hysteresis in ethical trajectories. As a concrete arena, we analyze the Dracula classification task, where a Transformer is trained to distinguish safe, Dracula, and neutral sequences under holor-aware regularization. We design curricula that differ only in the order of example presentation and predict persistent differences between resulting models as signatures of non-trivial holonomy. -/- We then extend the non-Abelian picture to holarchic retrieval and HC8-style provenance. Traversal policies become gauge choices on the connection; epistemic lineages are paths in a meta-connection space, with admissible and Dracula lineages characterized by their holonomies. Ethical simulators and "Dracula nullification" procedures are formulated as flows constrained not only in state space, but also in curvature space, with a generalized admissibility operator P_{adm} acting on both holor fields and connections. -/- Finally, we sketch the implications for holor processors and SpiralOS: specialized accelerators and operating systems whose native workload is projected holor-gauge dynamics in Spiral Time. Holor Calculus IV thus completes the field-theoretic layer of the programme: it generalizes the Abelian core of Holor Calculus I–III to a gauge-theoretic description of order-sensitive learning, traversal, and ethics, and prepares the ground for Holor Calculus V on intentional design and SpiralOS architectures. “Jury Nullification, Verdictal Asymmetry, and the Ultimate Logic of Anarchy” is a critical examination and analysis of the ‘anarchy objection’ to jury nullification, a common argument against informing juries of their nullification power. The anarchy objection posits that jury nullification leads to inconsistent verdicts (verdictal asymmetry) and, as a result, social anarchy and chaos. Through careful analysis, I argue that the anarchy objection is predicated on two flawed premises: first, that jury nullification promotes verdictal asymmetry, (...) and second, that such asymmetry leads to anarchy. Such commitments are, I argue, empirically unsupported and conceptually misguided. Verdictal asymmetry is an intrinsic feature of the common law system, present at nearly every adjudicative stage, and not uniquely linked to jury nullification; yet we certainly do not live in an environment of jural/social anarchy. Finally, I discuss how the principle of treating like cases alike is primarily a procedural constraint, not a mandate for verdictal symmetry. By dismantling the anarchy objection, I aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of the jurisprudence surrounding the jury nullification debate and its role within the legal system. (shrink)

This paper introduces the nullification operator as a general method for restoring coherence in a finite base of constraints that contains explicit contradictions. The operator removes the smallest and least important set of elements required to eliminate inconsistency, where importance is defined by a priority structure called Constraint Tiebreaking Logic (CTL). Rather than modifying inference rules, the operator acts on the premise base before inference takes place. As a result, classical reasoning is recovered on the coherent remainder of the (...) original base. The paper defines the operator formally, proves its soundness, completeness and minimality, and shows that it can be iterated until reaching a fixpoint. In the finite case, the fixpoint corresponds to a maximal coherent subset of the original base selected according to CTL. The approach integrates ideas from belief revision, constraint satisfaction and minimal diagnosis, while maintaining classical logic as the inference engine. The philosophical interpretation of the operator is grounded in the Theory of Non-Knowledge, which treats contradiction as a sign of representational saturation rather than failure, and coherence as a finite operational structure. Under this view, knowledge is not an absolute totality, but a minimal unit stabilized by intervention. The method provides a constructive model for acting under contradiction, offering a formal science of stability without assuming the existence of holistic knowledge. (shrink)

This framework addresses persistent fragmentation in grief research by providing mathematical foundations that generate specific, testable hypotheses about grief mechanisms and individual differences. We propose three core hypotheses: dependency integration depth predicts grief intensity, metacognitive (...) vulnerability patterns determine complication risk, and threshold dynamics distinguish adaptive from maladaptive responses. Available empirical evidence provides preliminary support for these predictions, though systematic validation through studies designed specifically to test coherence degradation mechanisms remains necessary. The framework offers potential foundations for precision assessment and targeted intervention while revealing connections between individual grief experiences and universal principles governing complex system adaptation. E.J. Lowe attempts to meld elements of volitionalism and agent causalism in his recent essay on philosophy of action, Personal Agency. United in the belief that our mental states are inefficacious when it comes to producing volitions, agent causalists disagree over just how to formulate an alternative understanding of how we bring about our actions. We exercise self-control so as to become appropriate objects of reactive attitudes, by being the ultimate sources of our behavior- here they concur. But the precise (...) nature of the relation between agents and the volitions that ensue upon exercises of our will is disputed. Volitionalists, for their part, refuse to countenance talk of substances as causal relata. Only events are effective, they see our mental lives and attendant behavior proceeding without us being in any way involved except, perhaps, as spectators with a rooting interest in their having favorable outcomes, the threat such a nullification would pose to our belief in free will apparently being of less concern to them than the imperative of subsuming all occurrences under natural laws. This undergraduate Philosophy thesis critically reexamines Hannah Arendt’s theory of the banality of evil—first articulated in her 1961 report on the trial of Adolf Eichmann—through the lens of modern American bureaucratic systems. Arendt’s controversial claim that evil can manifest in the actions of purely thoughtless, non-malevolent individuals entrenched within corrupt or dehumanizing bureaucratic structures has elicited significant debate among political and ethical philosophy scholars. While her theory focuses on totalitarian regimes, this study expands the applicability of Arendt’s framework by exploring (...) its relevance in contemporary, American, non-totalitarian bureaucracies. -/- The work engages deeply with Arendt’s notions of thoughtlessness and agency, questioning whether bureaucratic actors operating in ostensibly democratic systems can be said to perpetuate evil in similarly banal ways. Central to this analysis is the inquiry into the conditions under which moral culpability is mitigated by structural forces that promote corrupted ethics and obfuscate personal agency. By drawing parallels between Arendt’s observations of Nazi functionaries and the bureaucratic inertia observed in the modern American institutions that may create a culture of complicity, the thesis interrogates the ethical limits of moral responsibility in environments where duty and efficiency are prioritized over individual consciousness. -/- Critically addressing common objections to Arendt’s theory, particularly those concerning the nullification of agency and moral judgment that were widely misunderstood as conditions of banality, this study proposes a continuum-based model of moral responsibility. It argues that moral blame in bureaucratic systems should be scaled according to the degree of an individual’s awareness, autonomy, and the extent to which they conform to corrupted organizational values. It importantly argues that banality was not intended to be exculpatory: it suggests instead that moral culpability for banal evil should be seen as asymptotic, increasing with individual autonomy but never altogether free from blame. This refined model permits a more nuanced understanding of banal evil, avoiding wrongful immunity for complicit agents while accounting for and scaling the dehumanizing influence of bureaucratic hierarchies that may complicate independent moral reasoning. -/- Ultimately, this thesis advances Arendt’s framework by demonstrating its enduring relevance in liberal democratic contexts, while providing a more robust account of how thoughtlessness, obedience, and institutional complicity operate within contemporary bureaucratic structures. By shifting the discourse away from pure thoughtlessness or total deprivation of agency—and instead toward a spectrum of moral agency—it attempts to simplify contemporary recognition of banal evil, broaden the concept's operational reach, and open new avenues for assessing individual moral responsibility within corrupt ethical systems. In arguing that the contemporary bureaucratic expanse has generated a more pervasive (and increasingly opaque) culture of complicity, it seeks to arm individuals with the tools to discern and resist. The legal reasons that bind a judge and the moral reasons that bind all persons can sometimes pull in different directions. There is perhaps no starker example of such judicial dilemmas than in criminal sentencing. Particularly where mandatory minimum sentences are triggered, a judge can be forced to impose sentences that even the judge regards as “immensely cruel, if not barbaric.” Beyond those directly harmed by overly harsh laws, some courts have recognized that “judges who, forced to participate in such (...) inhumane acts, suffer a loss of dignity and humanity as well.” When faced with such a judicial dilemma—a powerful tension between the judge’s legal and moral reasons—the primary question is what a judge can do to resolve it. We argue that the two standard responses—sacrificing morality to respect the law (“legalism”), or sacrificing the law to respect morality (“moralism”)—are unsatisfying. Instead, this Article defends an underexplored third response: rather than abandoning one ideal to maximally promote the other, we argue that judges should seek to at least minimally satisfy the demands of both. Judges should, in other words, look for and employ what we dub Satisficing Options. These are actions that enjoy sufficient support from both the legal reasons and the moral reasons, and thus are both legally and morally permissible—even if the acts in question would not strictly count as optimal by the lights of the law or morality. This common sensical response to the problem is not only underappreciated in the literature, but also has great practical import. Focusing on the sentencing context, this Article demonstrates that judicial dilemmas can be systematically resolved, mitigated or avoided through a range of concrete strategies that on their own or in conjunction can constitute Satisficing Options: these strategies include seeking out legally permitted but morally preferable interpretations of the law, expressing condemnation of unjust laws in dicta, and seeking assistance or cooperation from other actors to help defendants facing substantively unjust mandatory sentences. While these strategies can at times also go too far, we argue that in certain contexts they can be sufficiently defensible on both legal and moral grounds to be a justifiable response to judicial dilemmas. This Article thus provides both a novel theoretical framework for understanding the justification of judicial responses to unjust laws, as well as a practical a menu of options which judges can use to guide their responses to the judicial dilemmas that they are increasingly likely to encounter within our criminal justice system.
