In 2021, the men’s English national football team reached their first final at a major international tournament since winning the World Cup in 1966. This success followed their previous achievement of reaching the semi-finals (knocked-out by Croatia) at the 2018 World Cup. True to form, the defeats proved unfalteringly English; with the 2021 final echoing previous tournament defeats, as England lost to Italy on penalties. However, what resonated with the predictability of an English defeat, was the accompanying chant, ‘it’s coming (...) home’. A ubiquitous presence throughout the course of both tournaments—while chanted at England football matches, it was also repeated across social media, the press and commercial advertising—the chant originates from the 1996 single, Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home), performed by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds. In what follows critical attention will be given to examining how the song offers what will be argued is a melancholic outlook. By re-approaching examples of English nostalgia and hubris, this chapter will expose how illustrations of English melancholy offer the potential for promoting collective forms of expression, which, when contextualized alongside England’s lack of footballing success (for the men’s team, at least), can be offset against a melancholic mediation that is cognizant of the centrality of loss—both for the subject and our collective sporting endeavours. While LLMs can convincingly simulate the formal aspects of judgement—Constructivity (C1) and Coherence (C2)—they structurally lack the foundational (...) PJF and the motivating RD. This absence results in a fundamental inability to achieve Resonance (R): the living, affective, and self-referential 'return of meaning' to a subject. The “numinous” (shen) and “earthly energy” (diqi) serve as the driving forces for the emergence of internal resonance activities within the state of the great void tranquility. Core Claims: Sufficiently connected symbolic networks self-organize toward high-coherence basins that we can detect from measurements alone: rising principal-subspace overlap , higher recurrence determinism (%DET) and CCSD (compressed coherent symbolic density), a softening multiplex spectral gap, faster return rates back to basins, and drops in the ecology potential Psi_eco. These basins behave like symbolic gravity wells in representation space: gradient flow on Psi_eco pulls and reorganizes nearby states. Crucially, the effect is structural: under semantic masking (meaning scrambled, structure preserved) we still observe radiant transfer, edge lock-windows, and adoption—establishing a structure-first channel. This paper proposes that human meaning-making operates according to a 'quantum dynamics,' a formal structure analogous to quantum mechanics but applicable to the macroscopic world of experience. We introduce the concept of a 'wave function of meaning' (Ψ(m)) to describe the superposition of potential meanings a subject holds before a judgement. We argue that unlike its physical counterpart, which decoheres in the macroscopic world, the richness of Ψ(m) grows with complexity. A 'Judgemental Uncertainty Principle' is proposed, positing a trade-off between (...) the certainty of a meaning-fixation and its future resonant potential, providing a structural explanation for creativity versus dogma. We then analyze the dynamics of this wave function, showing how its moment-to-moment reshaping by attentional salience (the 'Judgemental Operator') explains ontological bistability. This model is used to deconstruct the QKV attention mechanism in LLMs, revealing it to be an 'empty formalism'—a sophisticated mimicry of the structure of judgement that lacks the essential components of a purpose-driven Resonance Drive (RD) and the affective experience of Resonance (R). This paper proposes a formal isomorphism between the structure of meaning-making in Judgemental Philosophy (JP) and the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics. We argue that the Pre-Judgemental Field (PJF)—the field of potential meanings—is structurally equivalent to Hilbert space, and that the state of potential meaning can be described by a 'wave function of meaning' (Ψ(m)) analogous to the quantum wave function (ψ(x)). In this framework, the act of 'judgement' is isomorphic to 'measurement,' and the resulting 'meaning-fixation' is equivalent to the (...) 'collapse of the wave function,' where a superposition of potential meanings resolves into a single, definite actuality. Crucially, this is not a physical claim about quantum processes in the brain, but an inquiry into a shared structural grammar for the transition from potentiality to actuality. This paper reconsiders the Darwinian assumption regarding the fundamental driver of biological evolution and proposes a new framework through the lens of Judgemental Philosophy (JP). Contrary to traditional evolutionary theory, which posits the primary drive of living organisms as the replication of genetic information, we argue that the deeper human imperative is the transmission of 'Meaning' beyond the preservation of genes. This judgement affirms the world as a meaningful place worthy of being passed down to future generations. From this perspective, the rapid decline in birthrates observed across technologically advanced societies is understood not just as a reflection of economic or social instability, but as a signal of 'existential restraint'—a collective refusal to bring new life into a world where the conditions for such meaningful judgement have structurally collapsed. By analyzing historical cases from societies like Japan, South Korea, and post-unification East Germany, the paper demonstrates a strong coherence between meaning collapse and declining birthrates. This paper aims to reconstruct traditional social contract theory through the original theoretical framework of Judgemental Philosophy. Whereas existing social contract theories have primarily explained the legitimacy of state and social order centering on concepts such as reason, natural rights, and agreement, this paper applies the core structures of Judgemental Philosophy—the Pre-Judgemental Field (PJF) and the Judgemental Triad (Constructivity, Coherence, Resonance), along with key stages of the "Enhanced Ten-Step Model of Judgemental Philosophy" (particularly S9: Inter-subjective Resonance, S10: Normative (...) Codification & Transmission)—to deeply analyze the fundamental motivations for social contract, its formation process, institutionalization, and the problem of securing ongoing legitimacy. This paper argues that the motivation for social contract originates from a fundamental drive to overcome the 'Indeterminacy' of the PJF and secure stable 'Resonance'; that the formation of the contract is a process of co-constructing meaning through S9's inter-subjective resonance; and that the resulting state is a judgemental structure institutionalized via S10's normative codification. Furthermore, it reveals that the legitimacy of the social contract depends on whether the community can continuously provide its members with meaningful Coherence and Resonance. This approach offers a new structural understanding of social contract theory and will provide an opportunity to extend the explanatory power of Judgemental Philosophy to politico-philosophical discussions. Although religious belief is often claimed to help with physical ailments including pain, it is unclear what psychological and neural mechanisms underlie the influence of religious belief on pain. By analogy to other top-down processes of pain modulation we hypothesized that religious belief helps believers reinterpret the emotional significance of pain, leading to emotional detachment from it. Recent findings on emotion regulation support a role for the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a region also important for driving top-down pain inhibitory circuits. (...) Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in practicing Catholics and avowed atheists and agnostics during painful stimulation, here we show the existence of a context-dependent form of analgesia that was triggered by the presentation of an image with a religious content but not by the presentation of a non-religious image. As confirmed by behavioral data, contemplation of the religious image eneabled the religious group to detach themselves from the experience of pain. Critically, this context-dependent modulation of pain specifically engaged the right VLPFC, whereas group-specific preferential liking of one of the pictures was associated with activation in the ventral midbrain. We suggest that religious belief might provide a framework that allows individuals to engage known pain-regulatory brain processes. (shrink)
