Since Circular 34 from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam required the head of the national project to have project results published in ISI/Scopus journals in 2014, the field of economics has been dominating the number of nationally-funded projects in social sciences and humanities. However, there has been no scientometric study that focuses on the difference in productivity among fields in Vietnam. Thus, harnessing the power of the SSHPA database, a comprehensive dataset of 1,564 Vietnamese authors (...) (854 males, 705 females) with 2,410 publications in the 2008 – 2018 period was extracted and analyzed. Various factors were considered including age, gender, new authors, leading authors, co-authorship, and Impact Factor. The findings suggest a high level of contribution from authors at the age of 40 – 44 in economics (858 publications) in a 12-years period, which is equivalent to the social medicine total output, and two times more than the total output of the education. Moreover, the presence and reinforcement of male researchers are still dominating in Economics and other fields, with the only exception of education. Despite the rapid rise in the number of Vietnamese lead authors, gender disparity among disciplines is an issue. Contrary to the strong international collaboration-oriented tendency in social medicine, economics, and other fields, educational authors are not open to international collaborating. Finally, most of the publications in economics belong to the group with JIF from 0 to 2, in contrast with the high number of social medicine publications with JIF from 2 to 5, which suggesting the field of economics is fulfilling the quantity, but still, need more quality publications. Initiatives relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver socially beneficial outcomes—AI for social good (AI4SG)—are on the rise. However, existing attempts to understand and foster AI4SG initiatives have so far been limited by the lack of normative analyses and a shortage of empirical evidence. In this Perspective, we address these limitations by providing a definition of AI4SG and by advocating the use of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a benchmark for tracing the scope and spread of AI4SG. (...) We introduce a database of AI4SG projects gathered using this benchmark, and discuss several key insights, including the extent to which different SDGs are being addressed. Defeasible argumentation has been applied successfully in several real-world domains in which it is necessary to handle incomplete and contradictory information. In recent years, there have been interesting attempts to carry out argumentation processes supported by massive repositories developing argumentative reasoning applications. One of such efforts builds arguments by retrieving information from relational databases using the DBI-DeLP framework; this article presents eDBI-DeLP, which extends the original DBI-DeLP framework by providing two novel aspects which refine the interaction between DeLP programs and (...) relational databases. First, we expand the expressiveness of dbi-delp programs by providing ways of controlling how the information in databases is recovered; this is done by introducing filters that enable an improved fine-grained control on the argumentation processes which become useful in applications, providing the semantics and the implementation of such filters. Second, we introduce an argument comparison criterion which can be adjusted at the level of literals to model particular features such as credibility and topic expertise, among others. These new tools can be particularly useful in environments such as medical diagnosis expert systems, decision support systems, or recommender systems based on argumentation, where datasets are often provided in the form of relational databases. This paper introduces new logical systems which axiomatize a formal representation of inconsistency (here taken to be equivalent to contradictoriness) in classical logic. We start from an intuitive semantical account of inconsistent data, fixing some basic requirements, and provide two distinct sound and complete axiomatics for such semantics, LFI1 and LFI2, as well as their first-order extensions, LFI1* and LFI2*, depending on which additional requirements are considered. These formal systems are examples of what we dub Logics of Formal Inconsistency (LFI) (...) and form part of a much larger family of similar logics. We also show that there are translations from classical and paraconsistent first-order logics into LFI1* and LFI2*, and back. Hence, despite their status as subsystems of classical logic, LFI1* and LFI2* can codify any classical or paraconsistent reasoning. (shrink)

Recently, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) got much attention from researchers even though ITS educational technology began in the late 1960s and ITS is just embryonic from laboratories into the field. In this paper we outline an intelligent tutoring system for teaching basics of the databases system called (MDB). The MDB was built as education system by using the authoring tool (ITSB). MDB contains learning materials as a group of lessons for beginner level which include relational database system and lessons (...) in the process to install and set up a database. MDB system has exams for each level of the Lessons. An evaluation was done to see the effectiveness the MDB among learners and instructors. The outcome of the evaluation was promising. (shrink)

Data normalization is a crucial step in database management systems (DBMS), ensuring consistency, minimizing redundancy, and enhancing query performance. Traditional methods of normalization in supermarket sales databases often demand significant manual effort and domain expertise, making the process time-consuming and prone to errors. This paper introduces an innovative machine learning (ML)-based framework to automate data normalization in supermarket sales databases. The proposed approach utilizes both supervised and unsupervised ML techniques to identify functional dependencies, detect anomalies, and suggest optimal schema (...) transformations. Experiments on supermarket sales datasets show substantial improvements in accuracy, scalability, and processing time compared to traditional approaches. This paper explores the structural and epistemological role of databases within Specific Artificial Intelligence (SAI) systems designed for Artificial Research by Deduction. While traditional AI databases are primarily used for data storage, pattern recognition, and statistical analysis, the deductive paradigm demands a radically different architecture: databases must serve as axiomatic knowledge bases, containing formally defined propositions, inference rules, and logical constructs. In this context, the database is not merely passive storage but an active epistemic core from which provable knowledge (...) is derived. The paper proposes a framework for designing such databases to enable deductive reasoning engines to retrieve, manipulate, and verify knowledge systematically. Emphasis is placed on internal consistency, logical transparency, and the traceability of proofs. The study highlights how constructing these logic-oriented databases within SAI is a necessary precursor to scaling such capabilities within Global Artificial Intelligence (GAI), ensuring that artificial research remains coherent, explainable, and theoretically sound. Successful biomedical data mining and information extraction require a complete picture of biological phenomena such as genes, biological processes, and diseases; as these exist on different levels of granularity. To realize this goal, several freely available heterogeneous databases as well as proprietary structured datasets have to be integrated into a single global customizable scheme. We will present a tool to integrate different biological data sources by mapping them to a proprietary biomedical ontology that has been developed for the purposes of (...) making computers understand medical natural language. We study logical reduction (factorization) of relations into relations of lower arity by Boolean or relative products that come from applying conjunctions and existential quantifiers to predicates, i.e. by primitive positive formulas of predicate calculus. Our algebraic framework unifies natural joins and data dependencies of database theory and relational algebra of clone theory with the bond algebra of C.S. Peirce. We also offer new constructions of reductions, systematically study irreducible relations and reductions to them and introduce a new characteristic (...) of relations, ternarity, that measures their ‘complexity of relating’ and allows to refine reduction results. In particular, we refine Peirce’s controversial reduction thesis, and show that reducibility behaviour is dramatically different on finite and infinite domains. (shrink)

Investigators increasingly need high quality face photographs that they can use in service of their scholarly pursuits—whether serving as experimental stimuli or to benchmark face recognition algorithms. Up to now, an index of known face databases, their features, and how to access them has not been available. This absence has had at least two negative repercussions: First, without alternatives, some researchers may have used face databases that are widely known but not optimal for their research. Second, a reliance on databases (...) comprised only of young white faces will lead to science that isn't representative of all the people whose tax contributions, in many cases, make that research possible. The “Face Image Meta-Database” (fIMDb) provides researchers with the tools to find the face images best suited to their research, with filters to locate databases with people of a varied racial and ethnic backgrounds and ages. Problems of representation in face databases are not restricted to race and ethnicity or age – there is a dearth of databases with faces that have visible differences (e.g., scars, port wine stains, and cleft lip and palate). A well-characterized database is needed to support programmatic research into perceivers' attitudes, behaviors, and neural responses to anomalous faces. The “ChatLab Facial Anomaly Database” (CFAD) was constructed to fill this gap, with photographs of faces with visible differences of various types, etiologies, sizes, locations, and that depict individuals from various ethnic backgrounds and age groups. In the evolving landscape of data security, traditional access control mechanisms often fall short in addressing dynamic and context-specific requirements. As data breaches become more sophisticated, organizations require more adaptive and intelligent access control strategies. This paper explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Just-in-Time (JIT) access control models to enhance database security. By leveraging AI, we aim to create adaptive, context-aware permission systems that grant access precisely when needed, reducing the attack surface and mitigating unauthorized access risks. (...) We begin by analyzing traditional access control methods such as Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Mandatory Access Control (MAC), and Discretionary Access Control (DAC), highlighting their limitations in handling real-time access control scenarios. The paper then explores the benefits of JIT access control, emphasizing how it minimizes over-privileged accounts and reduces security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, we investigate the role of AI in cybersecurity, particularly in real-time monitoring, anomaly detection, and decision-making processes for access control. To achieve a more intelligent access control framework, we propose an AI-driven JIT access model that incorporates machine learning algorithms, user behavior analytics, and contextual evaluation to determine access permissions dynamically. The proposed model is evaluated through simulations and case studies to measure its effectiveness in preventing unauthorized access, reducing the attack surface, and enhancing overall database security. The results demonstrate that our AI-driven approach significantly improves access accuracy, minimizes false positives and negatives, and optimizes response times compared to traditional methods. Through comprehensive analysis, this research provides a roadmap for organizations looking to implement AIenhanced JIT access control mechanisms. By dynamically granting access based on real-time behavioral and contextual assessments, organizations can significantly improve database security, reduce administrative overhead, and mitigate insider threats. Future research directions include further refinement of AI models, integration with multi-factor authentication mechanisms, and testing across diverse real-world scenarios to enhance security effectiveness. This paper presents the conceptual and structural foundations of the database used in Artificial Research by Deduction within the framework of Global Artificial Intelligence (GAI). As the initial and essential stage in the automated scientific research process, the database takes the form of a comprehensive global matrix, designed to integrate all quantifiable factors relevant to human and natural systems—ranging from population demographics and economic indicators to planetary dynamics and astronomical phenomena. -/- The database is initially constructed from (...) a wide array of national, continental, and international data sources, including unstructured datasets and specific matrices derived from early experiments in Specific Artificial Intelligence for Artificial Research by Deduction (SAI-D). Through a rigorous process of standardization, this information is restructured into a unified matrix organized hierarchically into factors, sub-factors, and potentially sub-sub-factors, each defined in quantitative terms and capable of providing a continuous flow of data. -/- This standardized global matrix serves as the foundational substrate for further stages in the Artificial Research by Deduction process. In the subsequent replication stage, robotic systems populate the matrix with real-time data flows, enabling deductive algorithms and GAI itself to identify potential mathematical relationships. These relationships are evaluated as empirical hypotheses and, if deemed rational, inform the construction of models that feed into GAI’s broader modelling and decisional systems. -/- Ultimately, the database is not merely a passive repository of information, but an active and evolving structure that supports rational hypothesis generation, model construction, decision-making, and systemic self-improvement. This paper focuses on the critical role of the database of words in the first stage—application—of Specific Artificial Intelligence (SAI) for Artificial Research by Application. Within this initial phase, the database functions as a structured repository of linguistic, conceptual, and categorical information relevant to a particular scientific or academic field. Words in the database are not merely stored as isolated entries but are indexed according to quantitative descriptors, taxonomic relations, functional uses, and semantic roles. The aim is (...) to enable the SAI to interpret empirical inputs, categorize observed phenomena, and retrieve comparable entries that inform hypothesis formation. This process of word-based categorization allows the SAI to match new data with existing conceptual structures, serving as the foundation for replication by Application. In scientific contexts such as medicine or astronomy, this means associating terms (e.g., symptoms, physical properties, conditions) with standardized descriptions and quantitative attributes. The paper outlines the necessary structure of such a database, including multi-layered descriptors, synonym management, and relational hierarchies that allow words to function as gateways to rational hypothesis generation. Ultimately, this linguistic architecture provides a bridge between raw empirical data and structured reasoning, laying the groundwork for subsequent stages of artificial research. (shrink)

Starting with the first international publication of Le Van Thiem (Lê Văn Thiêm) in 1947, modern mathematics in Vietnam is a longstanding research field. However, what is known about its development usually comes from discrete essays such as anecdotes or interviews of renowned mathematicians. We introduce SciMath—a database on publications of Vietnamese mathematicians. To ensure this database covers as many publications as possible, data entries are manually collected from scientists’ publication records, journals’ websites, universities, and research institutions. Collected (...) data went through various verification steps to ensure data quality and minimize errors. At the time of this report, the database covered 8372 publications, profiles of 1566 Vietnamese, and 1492 foreign authors since 1947. We found a growing capability in mathematics research in Vietnam in various aspects: scientific output, publications on influential journals, or collaboration. The database and preliminary results were presented to the Scientific Council of Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) on November 13th, 2020. (shrink)

The Planteome project provides a suite of reference and species-specific ontologies for plants and annotations to genes and phenotypes. Ontologies serve as common standards for semantic integration of a large and growing corpus of plant genomics, phenomics and genetics data. The reference ontologies include the Plant Ontology, Plant Trait Ontology, and the Plant Experimental Conditions Ontology developed by the Planteome project, along with the Gene Ontology, Chemical Entities of Biological Interest, Phenotype and Attribute Ontology, and others. The project also provides (...) access to species-specific Crop Ontologies developed by various plant breeding and research communities from around the world. This empirical addendum addresses a fundamental methodological gap in dream research: public dream databases, while valuable for establishing descriptive typologies, lack the systematic profiling necessary for causal validation and predictive testing. We demonstrate that dreams without complete dreamer profiling (cognitive state, psychological context, life events) invite unfalsifiable metaphysical interpretation rather than scientific analysis. Using dreams from DreamBank, we validate CDT's five-type taxonomy (Resolution, Replay, Residual, Generative, Lucid). However, the critical limitation becomes apparent: without knowing the dreamer's actual experiences and cognitive (...) tensions, we cannot test whether CDT's mechanistic predictions hold. We then present prospectively documented case studies with complete pre-dream profiling, demonstrating that: (1) Dreams trace directly to documented vault inputs and drift parameters; (2) CDT makes testable, falsifiable predictions; (3) No symbolic or metaphysical interpretation is required; (4) The mechanism is transparent and reproducible. Dupras and Bunnik’s strong statement against the normative approach of genetic exceptionalism, which can no longer be justified in the midst of multi-omic research, is of great importance fofor sound ethical reasoning about omic data. Furthermore, the authors’ explicit critique of a sole focus on genomics in normative considerations about data security and especially their nuanced depiction of sensitivity, (re)identification risks and discriminatory potential associated with epigenomic data in research and in private, commercial so-called “direct- to-consumer” epigenetic testing (as specified (...) in earlier works) might be a stepping stone for broadening the scope of normative discussions in other gene-ethics debates. Debates about therapeutic applications of tools such as CRISPR/Cas for example currently focus primarily on the genome and not on potential applications and ethical consequences of epigenome editing. Overcoming an exceptional focus on genomics and genetics by including the role of epigenomics into a primarily genome-centered normative debate is necessary to accommodate evolving biomedical fields of research. By means of conceptual clarification especially of the term “multi-omic contextualism” (Dupras and Bunnik 2021, 49) this commentary on Dupras, C., and E. M. Bunnik, "Toward a framework for assessing privacy risks in multi-omic research and databases" (The American Journal of Bioethics 2021 21 (12): 46–64. doi:10.1080/15265161.2020.1863516) argues that Dupras and Bunnik’s framework might currently be rather exceptional than contextual especially because extrinsic data properties are not primarily considered and that the framework is di-omic (genomic-epigenomic) rather than multi-omic because the meaning of multi-omics within the article appears to imply contextual factors. The highly relevant normative ideas on the problem of (re)identification risks and sensitivity of other than genomic, especially epigenomic, data presented by the authors are nevertheless, as Dupras and Bunnik assume (2021), likely to be relevant even beyond omics, for example, for imaging data, and it might thus be evaluated in future research whether multi-omic exceptionalism/contextualism could present a novel form of biological reductionism (Waggoner and Uller, "Epigenetic determinism in science and society," New Genetics and Society 2015 34 (2):177–95. doi: 10.1080/14636778.2015.10330522015), especially if primarily focused on the analysis of genomics and epigenomics. Dupras and Bunnik’s framework might then be made even stronger by making it broader. (shrink)

The central hypothesis of the collaboration between Language and Computing (L&C) and the Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science (IFOMIS) is that the methodology and conceptual rigor of a philosophically inspired formal ontology greatly benefits application ontologies. To this end r®, L&C’s ontology, which is designed to integrate and reason across various external databases simultaneously, has been submitted to the conceptual demands of IFOMIS’s Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). With this project we aim to move beyond the level of (...) controlled vocabularies to yield an ontology with the ability to support reasoning applications. Our general procedure has been the implementation of a meta-ontological definition space in which the definitions of all the concepts and relations in LinKBase® are standardized in a framework of first-order logic. In this paper we describe how this standardization has already led to an improvement in the LinKBase® structure that allows for a greater degree of internal coherence than ever before possible. We then show the use of this philosophical standardization for the purpose of mapping external databases to one another, using LinKBase® as translation hub, with a greater degree of success than possible hitherto. We demonstrate how this offers a genuine advance over other application ontologies that have not submitted themselves to the demands of philosophical scrutiny. LinKBase® is one of the world’s largest applications-oriented medical domain ontologies, and BFO is one of the world’s first philosophically driven reference ontologies. The collaboration of the two thus initiates a new phase in the quest to solve the so-called “Tower of Babel”. (shrink)

Objective: The measurement of international publication activities is one of the essential indicators used to evaluate the scientific development level of countries. Although many studies are using the bibliometric method in the literature, it is seen that there are very few bibliometric studies in the field of anatomy. This study aimed to analyze the articles bibliometrically which conducted by researchers at institutions from Turkey and indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) of the Web of Science database in the (...) category of Anatomy and Morphology. Materials and Methods: According to 2019 data, journals in the Anatomy and Morphology category and indexed in the SCI-E were determined. Publications from Turkey that were published in these journals was determined. The full-texts of these articles were examined, and study types were defined. Also, VOSviewer software was used to create a collaboration and word co-occurrence network. Results: It was determined that there were 48,002 publications in 21 journals. It was found that 1,461 publications (3.04%) have at least one author from Turkey. The total number of citations was 11,728 for these publications. The average number of citations was 8.02±11.95. The radiological studies have increased statistically more than both experimental animal and cadaveric studies by years. In addition, it has been determined that the total number of articles, especially the radiological studies, has increased significantly over the years. Conclusion: The increase in the number of scientific studies in the field of anatomy is important in terms of the contribution of Turkey to literature in this area. (shrink)

This short article is based on my special lecture entitled "Aristotle and the Philosophy of Education" at Tamagawa University Research Institute in Tokyo on September 19, 2015, through a recording of the spoken language transcribed in written form with some corrections. The lecture delivered on that day consists of two parts: referring to historical research and a statistical survey, the first half focuses on uncovering the fact that the philosophy of education has been slighted both in Japanese and Western academia (...) and that this fact is valid for both Aristotle's and contemporary studies on the philosophy of education; the second half endeavors to describe two possible research projects - namely, a classical-philosophical and interpretative study of Aristotle's philosophy of education and a contemporary-philosophical and Aristotelian study of the philosophy education. Some of these topics have been published but others have not. This short article concerns the first half of the lecture and measures the gap between philosophy and the philosophy of education in Japan through a statistical survey of the largest competitive research funding database in Japan: KAKEN. The study aimed to explore the trends and patterns of published documents online on professional development analyzed via bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database. Specifically, this study explored the documents published by year, author, affiliation, country, document type, and visualized them using VOSviewer. The methodology employed Boolean search queries to obtain peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, books, and peer-reviewed papers while excluding non-English and non-scholarly sources. The extraction of metadata provides information about authorship, institutional affiliation, country of origin, and document (...) type before analyzing the publication trends alongside the co-authorship networks and citation impact using h-index calculations, most-cited papers, keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, and bibliographic-coupling methods. Findings revealed that the publications on professional development increased considerably between 2022 and 2023 leading Aas, M. and Valachovic, R. W. to become the most influential authors while both the University of Johannesburg and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities produced the highest number of publications. The United States possesses the most dominant position in terms of document publication while social sciences represent 50.3% of the overall contributions alongside journal articles totalling 78.4% of all documents. Publication on professional development emerges as the central theme in the field as strong co-authorship relationships connect various researchers. The study concludes that publication on professional development research shifts toward interdisciplinary collaboration, policy influence, and evidence-based practices, emphasizing inclusive academic networks and evolving priorities. It is recommended that academic leaders promote combined disciplines, broader educational alliances, digital innovation, and fair resource distribution to utilize adaptive learning for educational progress, leadership development, and employee development programs. Since 2013, Vietnam has implemented a plan to reform the whole education sector. However, there is little understanding on the status of educational research in Vietnam, which may lay the foundation for such plan. Thus, this research aims to analyze the whole picture of educational research from Vietnam, as seen from the Clarivate Web of Science (WOS) database: 215 publications were recorded, ranging from 1991 to 2018. These 215 publications were further analyzed from five perspectives: 1) number of publications (...) by year; 2) research fields and levels of education; 3) top institutions with the highest number of publications; 4) international collaboration; and 5) quality. Some of the most notable results are: 1) the educational sciences in Vietnam have been still under-developed until recently; 2) among different research topics research among educational sciences, some (e.g., Vocational Education and Training or Early Childhood Education) seemed to be overlooked whereas others (e.g., Higher Education and Teaching and Learning) seemed to receive more attention from educational scholars; 3) all the most major education – specialized universities did not appear among the top five institutions with highest number of publications; 4) Australia, Thailand, the USA, New Zealand and China were the countries with the highest number of co-publications with Vietnamese researchers; and 5) The majority of publications belonged to low-ranked journals. Implications would be withdrawn for Vietnamese policymakers, education leaders, educational researchers and teachers in order to adjust their policies and/or action plans; thus, enhancing the performance and impacts of educational research in the future. Over the last thirty years, once staunchly historical cinema scholars such as Thomas Elsaesser, Jane Gaines, Siegfried Zielinski, and André Gaudreault have abandoned history for historiography and film studies for media archaeology. With increasing attention on the “database” as a symbolic metaphor for postmodernity and the decentered, networked tenants of the global present, cinema is taking on the characteristics of new media, existing in intertextual space. Thus, the term “post-cinema” has been co-opted as a viable intermediary that accounts for (...) new media conditions, as cinema is no longer emblematic of our cultural climate. As Giorgio Agamben wrote in 1992, “[t]he end of the cinema truly sounds the death knell of the ultimate metaphysical adventure of Dasein. In the twilight of post-cinema…human quasi-existence, now stripped of any metaphysical hypostasis and deprived of any theological model, will have to seek its proper generic consistency elsewhere." Accordingly, we are no longer “moviegoing animals” who seek images of ourselves among a collective in the dark but, rather, users interfacing within a network of moving images. (shrink)

Information may be defined as the conceptual or communicable part of the content of mental acts. The content of mental acts includes sensory data as well as concepts, particular as well as general information. An information system is an external (non-mental) system designed to store such content. Information systems afford indirect transmission of content between people, some of whom may put information into the system and others who are among those who use the system. In order for communication to happen, (...) the conceptual systems of the originators and users of the information must be sufficiently similar. A formal conceptual framework that can provide the basis for exchange of information is termed an ontology. In its most fundamental form, ontology studies the most basic constituents of reality. Traditionally, ontology seeks to reflects structures that are independent of thought and cognition. In addition to novelty and relevance, interdisciplinarity seems to be an imperative predicate in the scientific works carried out in Indonesia. Unfortunately, research on the interdisciplinarity itself, particularly from the perspective of philosophy of science, either descriptive or normative, i.e., what and how interdisciplinary has been (and should be) done is still a desideratum. Through database and normative-philosophical analysis, this article shows that most of the interdisciplinary works hitherto carried out are either additive or interpretative/take-over in nature. Such works (...) would be bad scientific practices. Good interdisciplinary works presuppose the existence of interdisciplinary material objects and their formal ones. These normative requirements, however, lead to a dilemma which should be faced by those who work interdisciplinarily. (shrink)

Background/Objective: The primary intension is to provide utility trade off and good privacy for intermediate datasets in cloud. Methods: An efficient conditional entropy and database difference ratio is employed for the process. Utility is taken care with the employment of conditional entropy with the help of Swarm Optimization (PSO). Privacy handled by database difference ratio. Findings: Conditional entropy is found out between the first column and the original database and this is taken as the fitness function in (...) Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Database difference is taken between the original database and convoluted database in the consequent module to yield right selection data and tuple information from the intermediate datasets in cloud. Applications/Improvements: Improved methods are required to provide privacy and utility for the right selection of datasets. This paper describes an Intelligent Tutoring System for helping users with ADO.NET called ADO-Tutor. The Intelligent Tutoring System was designed and developed using (ITSB) authoring tool for building intelligent educational systems. The user learns through the intelligent tutoring system ADO.NET, the technology used by Microsoft.NET to connect to databases. The material includes lessons, examples, and questions. Through the feedback provided by the intelligent tutoring system, the user's understanding of the material is assessed, and accordingly can be guided to different difficulty (...) level of exercises and/or the lessons. The Intelligent Tutoring System was evaluated by a group of users and the results were more than satisfactory in terms of the quality of the material and the design of the system. (shrink)

The study is dedicated to analyzing the key role of decision support systems (DSS) in modern science and industry, emphasizing their ability to automate complex processes, reduce the risks of erroneous decisions, and efficiently handle large volumes of data. The work explores the advantages of document-oriented databases (DODBs) over traditional relational databases for managing diverse datasets in materials science and aerospace engineering. The application of Elasticsearch (ES), a distributed search and analytics engine, is investigated for optimizing material selection and design (...) processes in the aerospace industry. Attention is also given to the ethical aspects of using software for making critically important decisions and the synergy between advancements in computational technologies and materials science. In bioethics, the first decade of the twenty-first century was characterized by the emergence of interest in the ethical, legal, and social aspects of neuroscience research. At the same time an ongoing extension of the topics and phenomena addressed by neuroscientists was observed alongside its rise as one of the leading disciplines in the biomedical science. One of these phenomena addressed by neuroscientists and moral psychologists was the neural processes involved in moral decision-making. Like most bioethical discussion, examination of human biobanks has been largely framed in terms of research subjects’ rights, principally informed consent, with some gestures toward public benefits. However, informed consent is for the competent, rights-bearing individual: focussing on the individual, it thus neglects social, economic and even political matters; focussing on the competent rights-bearer, it does not serve situations where consent is plainly inappropriate (eg, the young child) or where coercion can obviously be justified (the criminal). Using the British experience (...) of large-scale biobanking, I argue that the focus on consenting individuals distorts our ways of thinking about biobanks and has serious practical ramifications. This becomes clear if we contrast the case of adult biobanks intended for medical research with two other forms of biobanking. Thus child cohort studies – vital for sound scientific investigation of the interplay of genetics and environment in health – have been very badly funded next to adult studies. On the other hand, forensic databases have attracted massive investment, but little debate – partly owing to a sense that here, at least, is a case where consent is not relevant. Contrasting these central types of biobanking, I will suggest that there are powerful factors at work in limiting ‘ethics’ to individual rights. Projects of this size should direct our attention to more overtly political questions concerning priority setting and organisation of medical research. (shrink)

This paper explores the hypothesis that proper names serve as anchors identifying the individuals in the possible or real world. This hypothesis is tested on Old Icelandic narratives. A prominent feature of Old Icelandic sagas is that the narrative matter is not quite new. A Saga is reliable iff it refers to the events relevant for its audience and accepted as true by the whole community. I argue that proper names must be regarded as references to the background knowledge of (...) the medieval audience. I follow two contemporary Sagas based on the fresh events and show that proper names in a Saga mind were arranged in form of a database, each type of a personal designation having its charachteristic text-building profile. The form of the name and its frequency in the Saga are linked with the rank of the character. The high number of people mentioned in the Sagas is explained by the fact that the Sagas aimed at describing the real world, where the names of the individuals and the events they were involved cross-identified each other. Every character had its rigid identifiers. The total amount of propria is always higher than the number of active figures. I classify the Saga characters into five ranks and discuss their information-structural profiles. (shrink)

PostgreSQL has established itself as a powerful and feature-rich open-source relational database management system, increasingly adopted in modern cloud-native applications. As organizations transition to serverless computing for scalability and operational efficiency, integrating traditional stateful systems like PostgreSQL within stateless, event-driven workflows poses unique performance and architectural challenges. This research investigates the performance characteristics of PostgreSQL in such environments by leveraging key AWS services, including AWS Lambda and Amazon S3, to orchestrate serverless data pipelines. The study simulates a range of (...) real-world scenarios, including high-throughput bulk data inserts, concurrent data access, and complex analytical queries, to assess PostgreSQL’s behavior under load in an event-driven setup. Performance metrics such as query latency, throughput, system scalability, and cost-effectiveness are examined in depth. Furthermore, we present a case study modeled on production-scale workloads to highlight common bottlenecks, the impact of cold starts, database connection limits, and strategies to mitigate these issues through architectural and configuration optimizations. Here we present an experimental model to be applied to the storage and retrieval of information based on an associative information system’s sensory and motor state change data, aiming to represent the dynamics of a dynamic perceptual system. The model and database implementation use a universal information storage structure holding both data and metadata within the same structure. This model is characterized by the emphasis on associative information about the represented system derived from raw data, which are in their (...) turn produced by the associative system’s interactions with the environment. Instead of defining objects using descriptive relations, this model stores relations between occurents where the represented system is not replicated in its various components, but defined by its relations when they occur. This model therefore represents the dynamics and interaction of systems such as human perception, rather than imposing artificial boundaries and qualities. In essence, the model is an alternative to perceptual knowledge accumulation, which, as we show, can be applied to a database design. (shrink)

Background: In spite of the fact that computers continue to improve in speed and functions operation, they remain complex to use. Problems frequently happen, and it is hard to resolve or find solutions for them. This paper outlines the significance and feasibility of building a desktop PC problems diagnosis system. The system gathers problem symptoms from users’ desktops, rather than the user describes his/her problems to primary search engines. It automatically searches global databases of problem symptoms and solutions, and also (...) allows ordinary users to contribute exact problem reports in a structured manner. Objectives: The main goal of this Knowledge Based System is to get the suitable problem desktop PC symptoms and the correct way to solve the errors. Methods: In this paper the design of the proposed Knowledge Based System which was produced to help users of desktop PC in knowing many of the problems and error such as : Power supply problems, CPU errors, RAM dumping error, hard disk errors and bad sectors and suddenly restarting PC. The proposed Knowledge Based System presents an overview about desktop PC hardware errors are given, the cause of fault are outlined and the solution to the problems whenever possible is given out. CLIPS Knowledge Based System language was used for designing and implementing the proposed expert system. The research aims to identify the trends of Palestinian higher educational institutions in Gaza Strip as learning organizations from the perspective of senior management in the Palestinian universities in Gaza Strip. The researchers used descriptive analytical approach and used the questionnaire as a tool for information gathering. The questionnaires were distributed to senior management in the Palestinian universities. The study population reached (344) employees in senior management is dispersed over (3) Palestinian universities. A stratified random sample of (182) employees from (...) the Palestinian universities was selected and the recovery rate was (69.2%). Statistical analysis (SPSS) program was used for analysis and processing the data. The study found the following results: There is an agreement about: the importance of the focus of "organizational structure" with an average approval, the importance of "technological infrastructure" axis with high approval, and the importance of "strategic" with an average approval. The results concluded that the study sample agree on the importance of "organizational dimension" highly. The results showed that the sample believe that the "strategic leadership" level in the universities got medium-approval. There is a fair level agreement about the axis of interest "teams / committees". There is an agreement about the importance of the "human dimension" moderately. The results showed that the sample is highly agreed about the importance of focus of the "knowledge management", and the focus of the "continuing education". They agreed weakly to somewhat about the importance of the focus of "scientific research", moderately agree about the importance of the center of "institutional culture", agree moderately on the importance of "cognitive dimension". The results showed that the sample largely agree on the importance of the focus of "strategic partnerships and alliances". They agree highly on the axis "keep up with the labor market" and on the focus of the importance of "technology incubators". The results showed that the sample moderately agree about the importance of the theme on "consulting and training", the importance of the focus of "social responsibility", and the focus of the "Community dimension". The study found a group of recommendations including: there is a need to provide suitable environment that achieve learning organizations. There is a need to develop the technological infrastructure (hardware, software, networks, databases, and human skills) because of the great advantages that they offer. The universities need to adopt knowledge management in the academic and administrative departments because knowledge is the core of the work of these departments. The establishment of technology incubators in universities to adopt outstanding university research projects, to protect, to supports, and to market them; furthermore, to develop the capabilities and skills of employees in the field of information technology. I argue that semantics is the study of the proprietary database of a centrally inaccessible and informationally encapsulated input–output system. This system’s role is to encode and decode partial and defeasible evidence of what speakers are saying. Since information about nonlinguistic context is therefore outside the purview of semantic processing, a sentence’s semantic value is not its content but a partial and defeasible constraint on what it can be used to say. I show how to translate this thesis into (...) a detailed compositional-semantic theory based on the influential framework of Heim and Kratzer. This approach situates semantics within an independently motivated account of human cognitive architecture and reveals the semantics–pragmatics interface to be grounded in the underlying interface between modular and central systems. In this paper we show how a student can learn the basics of the system databases using (W3school CSS) which was built as intelligent tutoring educational system by using the authoring tool called (ITSB). The learning material contains CSS and HTML. We divided the material in a group of lessons for novice learner which combines relational system and lessons in the process of learning. The student can learn using example of CSS, and types of CSS color. Furthermore, the intelligent tutoring (...) system supports not only lessons; but exercises of different difficult levels for each lesson. When a student finish successfully the first difficulty level in a lesson, the student is allowed to move to the next difficulty level of the exercises of the lesson. (shrink)

Libertarian Robert Nozick, on my reading, responds to Bernard Williams by saying that if Williams thinks the way we should distribute medical goods is based on medical need, he is analogously committed to the distribution of haircuts based on need. As I read him, Nozick wonders why other aims to do with haircuts matter less for Williams than the “proper aim” of getting a haircut: can’t a barber set up a business because he likes conversation with a variety of people (...) and give haircuts according to whom he likes conservations with? I argue that a socially just attempt to distribute opportunities for haircuts will have to take into account other aims of a haircut than reducing inconveniently long hair. Haircuts have social functions, including subtly signalling sexuality. More subtle signals may be important in imperfectly liberal societies. This paper challenges an assumption which may be widespread on this database (or maybe not - I am the last one disposed to make it?): one assumes that a Williamsian approach applied to haircuts is all about preventing inconveniently long hair. The Ontology for Biomedical Investigations (OBI) is an ontology that provides terms with precisely defined meanings to describe all aspects of how investigations in the biological and medical domains are conducted. OBI re-uses ontologies that provide a representation of biomedical knowledge from the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) project and adds the ability to describe how this knowledge was derived. We here describe the state of OBI and several applications that are using it, such as adding semantic expressivity to (...) existing databases, building data entry forms, and enabling interoperability between knowledge resources. OBI covers all phases of the investigation process, such as planning, execution and reporting. It represents information and material entities that participate in these processes, as well as roles and functions. Prior to OBI, it was not possible to use a single internally consistent resource that could be applied to multiple types of experiments for these applications. OBI has made this possible by creating terms for entities involved in biological and medical investigations and by importing parts of other biomedical ontologies such as GO, Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) and Phenotype Attribute and Trait Ontology (PATO) without altering their meaning. OBI is being used in a wide range of projects covering genomics, multi-omics, immunology, and catalogs of services. OBI has also spawned other ontologies (Information Artifact Ontology) and methods for importing parts of ontologies (Minimum information to reference an external ontology term (MIREOT)). The OBI project is an open cross-disciplinary collaborative effort, encompassing multiple research communities from around the globe. To date, OBI has created 2366 classes and 40 relations along with textual and formal definitions. Background The worldwide increase in older persons demands technological solutions to combat the shortage of caregiving and to enable aging in place. Smart home health technologies (SHHTs) are promoted and implemented as a possible solution from an economic and practical perspective. However, ethical considerations are equally important and need to be investigated. Methods We conducted a systematic review according to the PRISMA guidelines to investigate if and how ethical questions are discussed in the field of SHHTs in caregiving for older (...) persons. Results 156 peer-reviewed articles published in English, German and French were retrieved and analyzed across 10 electronic databases. Using narrative analysis, 7 ethical categories were mapped: privacy, autonomy, responsibility, human vs. artificial interactions, trust, ageism and stigma, and other concerns. Conclusion The findings of our systematic review show the (lack of) ethical consideration when it comes to the development and implementation of SHHTs for older persons. Our analysis is useful to promote careful ethical consideration when carrying out technology development, research and deployment to care for older persons. There is an ongoing methodological debate in philosophy of science concerning the use of case studies as evidence for and/or against theories about science. In this paper, I aim to make a contribution to this debate by taking an empirical approach. I present the results of a systematic survey of the PhilSci-Archive, which suggest that a sizeable proportion of papers in philosophy of science contain appeals to case studies, as indicated by the occurrence of the indicator words “case study” and/or (...) “case studies.” These results are confirmed by data mined from the JSTOR database on research articles published in leading journals in the field: Philosophy of Science, the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science (BJPS), and the Journal for General Philosophy of Science (JGPS), as well as the Proceedings of the Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA). The data also show upward trends in appeals to case studies in articles published in Philosophy of Science, the BJPS, and the JGPS. The empirical work I have done for this paper provides philosophers of science who are wary of the use of case studies as evidence for and/or against theories about science with a way to do philosophy of science that is informed by data rather than case studies. The paper is a contribution to formal ontology. It seeks to use topological means in order to derive ontological laws pertaining to the boundaries and interiors of wholes, to relations of contact and connectedness, to the concepts of surface, point, neighbourhood, and so on. The basis of the theory is mereology, the formal theory of part and whole, a theory which is shown to have a number of advantages, for ontological purposes, over standard treatments of topology in set-theoretic terms. One (...) central goal of the paper is to provide a rigorous formulation of Brentano's thesis to the effect that a boundary can exist as a matter of necessity only as part of a whole of higher dimension which it is the boundary of. It concludes with a brief survey of current applications of mereotopology in areas such as natural-language analysis, geographic information systems, machine vision, naive physics, and database and knowledge engineering. AI, especially in the case of Deepfakes, has the capacity to undermine our confidence in the original, genuine, authentic nature of what we see and hear. And yet digital technologies, in the form of databases and other detection tools also make it easier to spot forgeries and to establish the authenticity of a work.
