  2. The Ethics of Xia: From Repayment and Retribution to the Practice of Holiness.Ryusho Nemoto - manuscript
This paper examines the concept of Xia () as an ethical category that transcends normative systems of law, religion, and morality. Originating in ancient Chinese thought, Xia embodies a commitment to repayment and retribution (houon- hofuku) as the basis for justice. Historical figures such as Jing Ke, Liu Bang, Liu Bei, and Guan Yu illustrate its classical forms, while Jeanne d’Arc, Mother Teresa, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer exemplify its manifestation in Western contexts. Modern figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and (...)

The argument is that (1) the spiritual crisis that Zhu Xi discussed with Zhang Shi 張栻 (1133–1180) and the other “gentlemen of Hunan” from about 1167 to 1169, which was resolved by an understanding of what we might call the interpenetration of the mind’s stillness and activity (dong-jing 動靜) or equilibrium and harmony (zhong-he 中和), (2) led directly to his realization that Zhou Dunyi’s thought provided a cosmological basis for that resolution, and (3) this in turn led Zhu Xi to (...)

  6. Material Objects in Confucian and Aristotelian Metaphysics: The Inevitability of Hylomorphism.James Dominic Rooney - 2022 - Bloomsbury Academic.
Hylomorphism is a metaphysical theory that accounts for the unity of the material parts of composite objects by appeal to a structure or ‘form’ characterizing those parts. I argue that hylomorphism is not merely a plausible or appealing solution to problems of material composition, but a position entailed by any coherent metaphysics of ordinary material objects. In fact, not only does hylomorphism have Aristotelian defenders, but it has had independent lives in both East and West. -/- I review three contemporary (...)

This is the main handout for my “Zhuangzi Month” public talk, Sept 26/27, 2025, hosted by the Division of Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Fāng Yǐzhì’s (方以智, 1611–1671) Yàodì Páo Zhuāng 藥地炮莊 (ca. 1663; “Monk Yàodì Concocts a Zhuāngzǐ”) is an exceptionally complex text. This chapter focuses on Zhu Xi’s theory of knowing in order to show how Zhu consciously appropriated Buddhist ideas to develop his own thought. Zhu repurposed the Buddhist term _zhijue_ (perceptual awareness) to become a general term for the mind’s various kinds of knowing activity. Zhu’s epistemology was a conscious rejection of radical approach associated with the Song dynasty Chan master Dahui Zonggao (1089–1163). Two parallel lines of argument are presented. First, the main reason that key aspects of Zhu’s thought (...)

  9. On The Four Orientations of Wang Yangming's Tenet of the Unity of Knowing and Acting.Ping Dong & George L. Israel - 2025 - Journal of East-West Thought 15 (1):1-19. Translated by George L. Israel.
When the Ming dynasty Confucian Wang Yangming (1472-1529) proposed his tenet of the unity of knowing and acting (zhi xing heyi 知行合一), he did so because he believed that Zhu Xi (1130-1200), his revered Song dynasty predecessor and architect of the School of Principle (Neo-Confucianism), had wrongly conceptually divided knowledge and action, and that this had led to profound problems of an existential nature for the individual with real-world consequences. For Wang Yangming, the relation between knowledge and action is fundamentally (...)

The question of ontological foundation has undergone a noteworthy revival in recent years: metaphysicians today quarrel about how exactly to understand the asymmetrical and hyperintensional relationship of grounding. One of the reasons for this revival is that the old quantificationalist meta-ontology inherited from Quine has been effectively criticised by leading philosophers favourable to a meta-ontology, the aim of which is to come to know “which facts/items ground (constitute the base of) which other facts/items”, thus to examine the relation of ontological (...)

  11. A Dilemma for Yong Huang’s Neo-Confucian Moral Realism.James Dominic Rooney - 2023 - Australasian Philosophical Review 7 (2):175-181.
Yong Huang presents criticisms of Neo-Aristotelian meta-ethical naturalism and argues Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucian approach is superior in defending moral realism. After presenting Huang’s criticisms of the Aristotelian metaethical naturalist picture, such as that of Rosalind Hursthouse, I argue that Huang’s own views succumb to the same criticisms. His metaethics does not avoid an allegedly problematic ‘gap,’ whether ontological or conceptual, between possessing a human nature and exemplifying moral goodness. This ontological gap exists in virtue of the fact that it is (...)

Later in life he studied two Daoist texts, namely, The Seal of the Unity of the Three in the Zhou Book of Changes or the Zhouyi Cantongqi 周易參同契, and The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of the Secret Talisman or the Huangdi Yinfujing 黃帝陰符經. The people of Shang, who represented the transition from a primitive to a civilized continuum with the invention of writing, were exposed to social stratification due to the self-interests of courtiers indulging in superstitions, relying on prophecy and necromancy.

AI engineers need applicable guidelines for implementing ethical principles into their technological solutions. But how can this be achieved? In this article, we take the development of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) as our starting point. First, we challenge the universalist approach, the view according to which some measures are necessary or sufficient for XAI in every context. Then, we propose a normative methodology for evaluating XAI measures that is adapted to specific contexts. This approach better integrates ethics into AI development (...)

This chapter is about issues in ethics and moral psychology that have been little explored by contemporary philosophers, ones that concern the advantages and disadvantages of two different kinds of empathy. Roughly, first type is what is sometimes called “other-focused” empathy, in which one reconstructs the thoughts and feelings that someone else has or would have. The second type, “self-focused” empathy, is the sort of emotional attitude someone adopts when she imagines how she would think or feel were she in (...)
