Crystal Structures 1. Simple Cubic (SC) Atomic Arrangement: Atoms are at each corner of the cube. Effective Atoms per Unit Cell: 1 (since each corner atom is shared by 8 unit cells). Coordination Number: 6 (each atom is surrounded by 6 others). Packing Efficiency: About 52.4%, which is relatively low. Examples: Polonium (at room temperature). Properties: Lower packing efficiency leads to potential for lower density and mechanical strength, fewer slip systems for deformation. 2. Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) Atomic Arrangement: Atoms are at each corner and one at the center of the cube. Effective Atoms per Unit Cell: 2 (1 from the corners + 1 from the center). Coordination Number: 8 (each atom at the corner has 8 nearest neighbors, considering the one center atom). Packing Efficiency: About 68%, more efficient than SC but less than FCC. Examples: Iron (α-Fe, below 912°C), Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, Vanadium. Properties: BCC structures tend to be harder at lower temperatures due to fewer slip systems, but they can become more ductile at higher temperatures. They have a unique structure where the close-packed directions are not along the unit cell edges but along the body diagonals. 3. Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) Atomic Arrangement: Atoms are at each corner and at the center of each face of the cube. Effective Atoms per Unit Cell: 4 (1 from corners + 3 from faces). Coordination Number: 12 (each atom has 12 nearest neighbors; 4 from the same plane, 4 from the plane above, and 4 from the plane below). Packing Efficiency: About 74%, indicating a very efficient packing of atoms. Examples: Aluminum, Copper, Gold, Nickel, Silver, Platinum. Properties: FCC metals are typically very ductile due to multiple slip systems available for dislocation movement. This structure also provides good mechanical properties, including toughness. #metallurgy
