# Update User

**POST** `/v1/organizations/users/{user_id}`

Update a member's organization role.

## Path parameters

- `user_id: string`

  ID of the User.

## Headers

- `"anthropic-version": optional string`

The version of the Claude API you want to use.

Read more about versioning and our version history [here](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/api/versioning?sdk_languages=http).

## Body parameters

- `role: "billing" or "claude_code_user" or "developer" or 2 more`

  New role for the User.

The accepted values depend on the organization type. Console and API organizations accept `user`, `developer`, `billing`, and `claude_code_user`; `admin` cannot be assigned through the API. Claude Enterprise organizations accept `user` and `managed`; changing a User's role to `managed` requires the `write:rbac_groups` scope in addition to `write:members`.
