Obsidian Hearts- Born 2 Lose

2025 opens with some surf ska to help us through the mourning in America. From Bakersfield (not a beach) CA Obsidian Hearts have gifted us their debut full length. Been waiting like a year of just surviving on singles for this. My best way to describe the sound is Agent Orange meets ska. This whole album fuckin shreds. My stand out track is Perpetual Freedom. It sounds like an 80’s jam you could put with Faction, Nardcore or any 80’s skate rock. So go over to their bandcamp, toss ’em something and crank this loud enough to shake waves and … Continue reading Obsidian Hearts- Born 2 Lose

Ska Year’s Resolution

2025 New Ska Resolutions- Hopes and Dreams of ska to come in a new year As we enter 2025 I am putting out a list of bands that I hope put out new music this year. Some of these have a high certainty and some are just pipe dreams, but this is a list of things I look forward to in ska for this year. First, I’ll start with a softball. I can’t wait to hear the new Bite Me Bambi album. It officially doesn’t come out until later in January, they have been shipping pre-orders since early December and … Continue reading Ska Year’s Resolution

Punk Politics #133 Cash 4 Kids

Another piece from Gimp Leg BIDEN COMMUTED THE SENTENCE OF THE JUDGE WHO DID THIS The following is a series of Facebook posts I wrote at the time of the lawsuit against the two judges for over $200 million in 2022 to the child victims of their scheme. Seeing that Biden commuted one of the judge’s sentences made me want to share this story again. This only covers some of the most egregious cases as I struggled to find a way to summarize the abuses while also giving enough details to adequately convey the horrors. To be clear, I believe … Continue reading Punk Politics #133 Cash 4 Kids

Mutiny- Avant Guardian review

Skacore’s amazing year continues with the return of Hurricane MUTINY! Their new 7 inch, Avant Guardian vol. 1, comes out this fall. This one gives us 2 new tracks. Monarch sounds like Propagandhi meets ska and O Salutaris (which has been released as a single) is a straight up skacore wrecking ball. I’m still fan girling over their Supernova set. MUTINY has been my band of the year since March when their first release dropped. Go get to know MUTINY and Chrissidente’s scream if ya don’t already. Fun fact, MUTINY pairs really well with Final Fantasy 7. For those who … Continue reading Mutiny- Avant Guardian review

Stuck Lucky- Counting Curses review

Tennessee Skacore legends Stuck Lucky are back with their 5th album due out this October! As a bonus, they’ve joined the Ska Punk International family. The best way for me to describe the music is a dark skacore. Not quite goth, but on the edge. Adding to this records amazing sound are the organ talents of Chrissidente of MUTINY and Dissidente bringing amazing layers to Stuck Lucky’s skalloween music. This whole album just fuckin rages front to back, I can’t get enough of this band. My stand out track is this straight iut skacore banger titled heretics featuring vocals from … Continue reading Stuck Lucky- Counting Curses review

Master Of Trumpets review

Pookout Records gave us the comp of the year! Master of Trumpets is 11 ska bands covering 11 metal songs and it’s completely fuckin gnarly! The album opens in true Metalliska fashion with Redeemon covering Metallca’s blackened and the horn work is fuckin fire. My biggest highlight on this record is Roshambo covering Rage Against The Machine’s Bombtrack this one blows my mind each tine I blast it. The surprise on this is a ska jazz instrumental of Megadeth. Special mention to Hans Gruber and the Die Hards for sounding even more like Blue Meanies. This album is an absolute … Continue reading Master Of Trumpets review

Punk Politics #132 Punx are not marginalized

Dear punx, Project 2025 will not make you especially marginalized. Punk is supposed to be the fighting ally. I’ve been seeing writings of “it’s gonna be dangerous to be punk if Trump gets in. Committing to a music and even style of dress isn’t marginalization just because normies don’t like it. Sure, we get harassed by cops, but not nearly as much as BIPOC people, and if you’re white, you have a much better chance of getting to walk away. So, if you’re truly concerned about this, learn how to be an ally because we all gonna have to pick … Continue reading Punk Politics #132 Punx are not marginalized

Omnigone- FERAL review

Due out July 26th, 2025 on Bad Time Records is Omnigone’s 3rd full length FERAL. There’s not a better word to describe the musical feel of this record. And the last 2 were already fuckin gnarly. The East Bay skacore unit opens this album with the blistering lead single Quicksand that I’ve previously reviewed. From there it’s just each song ripping into the next at breakneck intensity for 26 minutes and some change. The short length intensity takes me back to hardcore records I grew up on and it feels good. My next standout is the latest single Grief. The … Continue reading Omnigone- FERAL review

Ghost Town Steppas- From Da Frontlines review

Carrying the flame of 2Tone forward in 2024 the Ghost Town Steppas come skankin’ in! With progressive mathy ska core and every other type of amazing ska happening we can forget about the roots. New Orleans’ Steppas are here with groove ass anthems to take us back to ska’s 2nd roots of Coventry 2Tone. Their sound is all the best parts of The Beat, The Selecter and Specials perfectly blended. My standout track is the ghetto ska anthem that opens the album Steppas Tonight. It’s the threatening feel of Specials Ghost Town meets Selecter’s Missing Words in its sound. So … Continue reading Ghost Town Steppas- From Da Frontlines review

Cop Watch #1

POLIVE OFFICER FIRED AFTER VIOLENTLY ASSAULTING 14 YEAR OLD Two teenagers walked by a police car and one of them yelled “Fuck the Police”- which is 100% legal. The police demanded the teems stop and they took off on foot. One police officer chased them down in his car while the other drew his gun and chased them down on foot. To be clear, you have every right to say fuck the police. The Supreme Court ruled this way in Cohen v California and affirmed the decision in Stare of Washington v Montgomery. In fact, the Supreme Court, in their … Continue reading Cop Watch #1
