dVerse Poets – Poetics – Imperatively Yours

Listen

Trust yourself
your heart knows
when given reign,
shut out those
external voices
the one’s who only
offer doubt or
toilet graffiti aphorisms,
eschew their cheap
disguised judgements,
listen to your
inner voice
note the tone
what rises,
name that feeling
that’s the core of you,
go with that.

The Rut – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

The Rut

Tranch as trench
life as mud,
the wherewithal of a
barbed wire calendar,
a mind-field waiting
to be cleared of
the dross of past lives
littered in no one’s land,
harbouring a treaty
shots fired
no retreat
words bleeding,
doves circling
our tears,
dog tags to be
collected as evidence
of going over the top.

A Shared Future – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

A Shared Future

Like trees
who communicate
through their roots
we need something
immediately,
now,
solidarity unplugged
roots of connection
a shared future.

An American Cinquain (2-4-6-8-2)

Choices

Silence
sometimes bidden
sometimes so moralised
well sometimes I just cannot be
silent.

Awry – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon

Awry

In another life
which feels like it was before
sliced bread came to be
but that can't be true
I'm not that old,
however, it feels that way,
and so, as I was saying,
It was then that I discovered
the involuntary art of
arguing with myself
while trying to make a point
in an argument with
someone else,
which on some occasions
led to much laughter,
but on others
created frustration or
even denial midst the
confusion, the lack of clarity
that I found difficult to navigate,
suffice to say -
I'd like to think I'm wiser now
but who knows
I'm not my best judge,
and, I confess,
this is not what I'd intended
to talk about,
I was trying to find a way to say
how easy it is for conversations
to go awry and you can start
with a clear intention
only to find you've landed
on some other shore
surrounded by hostile locals.
