RESQ - Quantum Sensing for Metabolic Brain Imaging
Project description and objective
RESQ (Enhanced RESolution Quantum sensing for metabolic brain imaging) aims to advance the use of quantum sensing in medicine by developing resolution-enhanced hyperpolarised magnetic resonance imaging (HP-MRI). The project focuses on quantum-enhanced metabolic imaging to improve the detection of small brain metastases that can remain invisible with conventional imaging technologies.
Bringing together expertise from Europe and the Republic of Korea, RESQ combines advances in hyperpolarisation, quantum control and magnetic resonance imaging. The project will optimise parahydrogen generation and storage to achieve reproducible high spin order while developing quantum-optimised acquisition and reconstruction techniques that integrate tailored radiofrequency pulses, compressed sensing and machine learning.
RESQ will also develop dedicated dual-tuned brain coils to enhance the performance of HP-MRI for brain imaging applications. By combining these technologies, the project aims to overcome current resolution limitations and lay the foundations for translating quantum-enhanced metabolic imaging into clinically relevant applications.
Beyond its technological objectives, RESQ will establish an EU–Republic of Korea quantum imaging node to support researcher exchanges, joint training and sustainable research infrastructure. The project will strengthen international cooperation in quantum sensing, contribute to the development of HP-MRI standards and reinforce Europe's quantum ecosystem while paving the way towards future clinical applications.
