EQUIP-G - European Quantum Infrastructure Project for Gravimetry
Project description and objective
EQUIP-G (European Quantum Infrastructure Project for Gravimetry) aims to establish the terrestrial segment of a future pan-European quantum gravimetry infrastructure. By deploying and validating state-of-the-art quantum gravimeters and gradiometers, the project will create a shared European infrastructure that enables highly accurate gravity measurements for scientific research and societal applications.
Bringing together leading research institutions and technology developers from across Europe, EQUIP-G will build a network of quantum gravity sensors supported by shared instrumentation, reference stations and harmonised measurement procedures. The project will comprehensively test these instruments under laboratory and field conditions to demonstrate their performance and reliability in real-world environments.
A key objective of EQUIP-G is to ensure that all measurements are fully traceable to international SI standards while following FAIR data principles. The project will develop innovative measurement strategies and establish the foundations for long-term access to quantum gravimetry capabilities through a sustainable European infrastructure integrated with the European Plate Observing System (EPOS).
The technologies developed within EQUIP-G will support a wide range of applications, including groundwater and geothermal resource management, climate monitoring, natural hazard assessment, geodesy and infrastructure monitoring. Through community building, training activities and open access to quantum sensing technologies, the project will strengthen Europe's leadership in quantum gravimetry and accelerate the adoption of quantum sensors for Earth observation and environmental monitoring.
