Dewey Read A Thon…

dewey
Ok, so I am starting my day a little late.. but that is because today is a gorgeous day outside and we had so many spring events happening.

I participated in the Read-a-Thon two years back. I was forgetting my original love of book reading then and the read-a-thon reminded me to get back to books. I am all geared up for this day with a few audio and a few books in my list… Loving it so far!

Introductory!
1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Virginia, USA

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Momzillas

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Cheese Cake πŸ˜‰ Yes, snack!!

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I am an avid reader, a mom and a full time software consultant.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? I did not do last year 😦

Hour 5 to Hour 8:

Fixed myself a lunch (real quick one) and started reading Momzilla. Loved the book , once I got through that.. I spent sometime listening to an audio and napped off πŸ˜₯ Yeah!!! Too bad.. I know.

Hour 8 to Hour 10:

Started reading Brida after a refreshing cup of hot steaming tea and some Yummy (hopefully healthy snack πŸ˜‰ ) Ok, the picture does’nt do it enough justice really!

Salsa

Mid Event Survey
We are mid way already??? Where did the time go…

1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired? I cheated and took a nap inbetween, so I feel perfectly fine πŸ™‚

2) What have you finished reading? Brida by Paul Coelho and Momzillas by Jill Kargman

3) What is your favorite read so far? I think I liked Momzilla better

4) What about your favorite snacks? I had some craisins and I loved it.

5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love! I have been focussing on reading, going to be doing a lot of checking out blogs in the second half surely.

Hour 12
Time for an audio book while cooking some dinner and eating (hogging!) on some more snacks.. This is so darn good!!

Snacks

Hour 14
Dinner is served and my audio book is taking longer than what I thought it would. Maybe I should go ahead and do some laundry. After the next 30 minutes, I will move back to my unfinished reading book :).

Did I say, I love this read a thon. πŸ™‚

Hour 19
Wow, hour 19 and still going strong. I started a new book some 30 minutes back but I am really starting to slip. I am rummaging through my bookshelf to find something else that will keep me going .. seriously going πŸ™‚

Ate a big and I mean a big piece of cheesecake.. some more tea… some chips and still snacking. Heck, I can always exerise tomorrow…. Cos it is not everyday we get a read-a-thon πŸ˜‰

Challenges 2010 – Wrap Up

Hello
Here is my wrap up post for the challenges that I participated in 2010. I think I did poorly but that is not going to stop me from participating in them this year.

I chose to take up four challenges and completed just 2 of them. I did not even start with the “What’s in a Name 3” challenge. What a Shame? This was such an exciting one and I had only managed to short list on the books I was going to read.

I did just OK with the “A to Z Challenge” and managed to finish 19 books. I was reading 3 of them but dint get to complete them before the 31st December. SAD!

  • James Patterson Reading Challenge – 100% Completed
  • 2010 Chick Lit Challenge – 100% Completed
  • A to Z Reading Challenge – 73% Completed
  • What’s in a Name 3 Challenge – 0% Completed

PS: I am looking forward for the challenges of 2011, so please recommend some interesting ones that you are participating in.

Void Moon by Michael Connelly

The Book:

Void Moon by Michael Connelly
Cassie Black has never looked back. She walked away from her life as a criminal after one disastrous night that left the man closest to her dead and her life in a shambles. Now she’s thriving at a job selling Porsches to Hollywood hot shots. Through everything β€” even her darkest moments β€” she has been able to keep going by holding on to one perfect thing, her greatest secret, dearer to her than life itself.

When that secret is threatened, Cassie tosses her new life away like a bad hand of cards and goes back in a sprint to her old line of work. Her trade was robbing casino gamblers, and she was the very best. Now it’s the only way she can make enough money fast to maybe make everything right. Quickly she lines up a mark, a man who has been winning steadily for a week at high-stakes baccarat. The job goes smoothly until she opens his briefcase…

And discovers a world of trouble she never dreamed of. Her superstitious friend who lined up the job says it’s the bad-luck void moon having its malignant way. Cassie knows it’s worse. She’s crossed paths again with her life’s nemesis, the man who destroyed everything six years before. He’s Jack Karch, a private investigator by day who does bloody work for casino owners by night. Walking back into his sights is the worst thing that’s ever happened to Cassie. Getting out alive will take all her skill and luck and faith in that one good thing…

The View:

This book was so-so-so unbelievably good. I have read quite a few books by Michael Connelly in the past and I think “Void Moon” is a class apart. The Las Vegas setting was perfect. The author seems to have done a lot of research into what he was writing about. Well written fiction about casino thief’s do please me; but because of the gross deficiency of well-written books I prefer movies. As I read the book I could picture every scene or event and was wondering why a movie had not yet been released. When released this would definitely be a blockbuster.

The characters were all well portrayed and genuinely real. All of them had a good and bad side and fit like a glove in the Las Vegas environment. I loved the way the characters played each other; there was a selfish agenda to each and every one of them and they did utter justification to it. I cannot praise this book enough and have already recommended it to a few of my friends. Needless to say they loved it too.

I don’t think there is any question in my mind about the rating this book deserves. A 5 on 5 with a note stating as “HIGHLY recommended”.

The View:

In spite of my busy life, I managed to read this book in just one day. Short chapters, a fast paced plot, extreme cruelty and a smart stunning hero – this book had everything that one would expect from James Patterson.

I typically do not like books that are based on the mafia because they are always filled with viciousness and malice. “Judge and Jury” was slightly different from the others I have read; and I would attribute it to the writing. It was a notch above, managing to throw light on the extreme cruelty of the mafia but projecting it in a subtle manner. There were instances when the brutality had to be detailed specially when Cavello is in South America but I felt that was needed for the ending. It was so close to the end and it makes us justify Nick’s action of leaving him to die.

A powerful and revengeful story with just the right mix of motherly love, grief, passion and courage.
Rated a 5 on 5 because I enjoyed it thoroughly and I am sure you will too.
