Written on the Wind (Douglas Sirk, 1956) – Nymphomaniacs, alcoholics, oil barons, miscarriages, and murder are all in a day’s work in this quintessential Sirkian melodrama. As per usual with Sirk, the film is glossed over in vibrant Technicolor and beautiful ‘Scope framing, with all the sleazy, trashy soap underneath. Completely improbable and outrageously entertaining, often very funny. Starring Sirk’s favorite go-to Rock Hudson and shot by long time collaborator Russell Metty. (EM)
