Paperback 1008: Dell 600 (1st ptg, 1952)

Title: Rogue Queen
Author: L. Sprague de Camp
Cover artist: Mike Ludlow

Condition: 7/10
Estimated value: $8-10

Dell600
Best things about this cover:

  • That seems a reasonable way to learn about sex tbh
  • "OK, so, step 1: put the spear away"—Earth-man
  • I'm sure that phallic rocket is in no way a phallic symbol
  • That is some very convenient cape and forearm
  • Her hair is amazing

Dell600bc
Best things about this back cover:

  • "You ... complete ... me ... seriously, do it, complete me, I'm not a woman yet, get on with it."
  • You take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have the Facts of Full Womanhood, The Facts of Full Womanhood!
  • That is the sloppiest damn ringed planet I even did see. It's like a 5-year-old drew a ball of yarn

"It is a curious feature of Terran culture that when the men do something of a stupidity they always blame their wives."

I like her.

Title: The House That Stood Still
Author: A.E. Van Vogt
Cover artist: Uncredited

Estimated value: $8-10
Condition: 9/10

PBLib63016
Best things about this cover:
  • "Pete... do you see that?" "What?" "That house ... it's not moving. It's just ... sitting there." "Dear God! You're right! Call for backup."
  • "DO NOT LOOK BEHIND THE MASK OR YOU WILL SEE THE TERRIFYING VISAGE OF ... Shelley? Shelley from Accounting? What are you doing here?"
  • That ziggurat is gonna want to have that growth looked at.
PBLib63016bc
Best things about this back cover:
  • "Obliterate the universe from the heavens"? This doesn't sound ... right.
  • Immortals are always trashing shit and running away.
  • That last sentence needs a huge spoiler alert. Why would I want to read now?

Paperback 974: Escape to Earth / ed. Ivan Howard (Belmont L92-571)

Paperback 974: Belmont L92-571 (PBO, 1963)

Title: Escape to Earth
Editor: Ivan Howard
Cover artist: Ed Emshwiller ("emsh")
Designed by: Irving Bernstein

Estimated value: $15
Condition: 9/10

BelmontL92571
Best things about this cover:
  • Love the "Barbarella" vibe on this one (though "Barbarella" is still several years in the future).
  • This is late Emshwiller. Still great Emshwiller. Beautiful, decorative, intricate space-tech surfaces. Bottom half is not much to look at, but the top is lovely.
  • Novelets! Is that how you spell that? Reminds me of when I first saw "cigaret" (Raymond Carver). Disorientingly defrenchified.
  • Hilariously, Google dictionary flags "novelette" as "derogatory."

BelmontL92571bc
Best things about this back cover:
  • I like the red-bordered spreadsheet look. Very early-80s / "Stranger Things"
  • Hey, look!: credits not just for Emshwiller, but for the *designer* as well!? Why can't all books be this good about crediting the art people!?
  • Manly Banister is the politest porn name.

[from "Temple of Despair" by M.C. Pease]

"You're dressed like a priest," Brandis said; "I don't want to get stoned."

One of the great out-of-context lines in Pop Sensation history.

Paperback 970: The Illustrated Man / Ray Bradbury (Bantam 991)

Paperback 970: Bantam 991 (1st ptg, 1952)

Title: The Illustrated Man
Author: Ray Bradbury
Cover artist: [Charles Binger]

Estimated value: $15
Condition: 8/10

Bant991
Best things about this cover:
  • Happy Bradburthday! (b. Aug. 22, 1920)
  • Ooh, the rarely seen *male* Fear Hand. Cool.
  • First story in this collection is "The Veldt." It is holy-smokes great. Legendary. Rereading today.

Bant991bc
Best things about this back cover:
  • This is the greatest back-cover bio of all time. OF ALL TIME.
  • Decry the hogwash!
  • After this book came out, Bradbury continued writing for another *60* years.
  • Had no idea he rocked the bow tie. Hot.

Page 123~

(LOL ... uh, this book is missing p. 121-152; not torn out, just ... never included!? Whoa. So ... p. 23!)

The first concussion cut the rocket up the side with a giant can opener. The men were thrown into space like a dozen wriggling silverfish. They were scattered into a dark sea; and the ship, in a million pieces, went on, a meteor swarm seeking a lost sun.

[Opening paragraph of "Kaleidoscope"] [insert quiet admiration here]

Paperback 771: Moonraker / Ian Fleming (Signet S1850)

Paperback 771: Signet S1850 (1st ptg, 1960)

Title: Moonraker
Author: Ian Fleming
Cover artist: Barye Phillips

Yours for: $25

Signet1850

Best things about this cover:

  • The long-awaited Moonmower prequel!
  • Remember when NASA designed its launch towers to looks like giant lady spies? Man, the '60s were awesome!
  • I choose to read only the text to the right of her head, thus: "a luscious lady spy that can blow the…" Now *that's* suspense!
  • This came out in 1960, when Janet Leigh's haircut from "Psycho" was apparently very popular.

Signet1850bc

Best things about this back cover:

  • Here's rocket in your eye!
  • Let he who is without a rocket in his eye cast the mote verily from within thine own talent … is how the bible verse goes, I believe.
  • You had me at "Flamboyant!"
  • DRAX is an occasional crossword answer. Just FYI.

Page 123~

"I'm terribly sorry, Sir Hugo. But could you possibly stop for just a moment? I want, I mean, I'm terribly sorry but I'd like to powder my nose. It's terribly stupid of me. I'm so sorry."
Hugo Drax then wondered angrily why Gala didn't go back at McDonald's, when she had the chance. I mean, she drank all that soda, what did she think was going to happen? God! Now we're never gonna get to uncle Bob's by dinner! Gimme your Walkman, Gala! Stupid girls don't get Walkmen!

Paperback 767: This World Is Taboo / Murray Leinster (Ace D-525)

Paperback 767: Ace D-525 (PBO, 1961)

Title: This World Is Taboo
Author: Murray Leinster
Cover artist: [Ed Valigursky]

AceD525

Best thing about this cover:

  • This world is taboo … hence the looooong line to get in.
  • I really do love mid-century rocket design. Why does the future-past / past-future always look so much more awesome than the present?!
  • I have no idea what I'm looking at here, but I feel like things are not going well for the wee man at the center of it all.

AceD525bc

Best things about this back cover:

  • That's a pretty mean thing to say about Dara. I'm sure she's lovely.
  • I dara you to land on Dara.
  • There is something so odd about "dodge" —not the word I expect … plus it's all orphaned there at the bottom. Word choice and layout matter.
  • I want a t-shirt with that blue circle design on it. Not even kidding.

Page 123~

The admiral said through stiff lips, "I'll blast—"

I don't know what the admiral's doing, but it sounds kinda taboo.

Paperback 709: The Galactic Invaders / James R. Berry (Laser Books 31)

Paperback 709: Laser Books 31 (PBO, 1976)

Title: The Galactic Invaders
Author: James R. Berry
Cover artist: Kelly Freas

Not For Sale — that would be like selling my (pretend) face

Laser31

Best things about this cover:
  • The Original Floating Head (also, my long-standing blogging avatar)
  • Love the Orange. Love the Font. Love the man who makes spaceships explode with his Mind.
  • The two holes on the helmet are for the retractable horns. Or ventilation. One of those.

Laser31bc

Best things about this back cover:
  • "Can we do the painting again from my good side? Thanks."
  • Finally we can see what the title on the front cover had obscured—the giant laser-equipped hairball that's orbiting Planet Orange.
  • "Bryan Cranston is ... Keith Cranston in ... The Galactic Invaders!"

Page 123~
Cranston blinked at the apparent double talk. Ohm was being oblique to the point of obscurity. So far neither of them had mentioned the room with ... those people. If Ohm didn't, Cranston sure as hell wasn't going to either.
Leave it to Ohm to be resistant. [PHYSICS PUN!]

Paperback 698: Vulcan's Hammer / Philip K. Dick // The Skynappers / John Brunner (Ace Double D-457)

Paperback 698: Ace Double D-457 (PBO/PBO, 1960)

Title: Vulcan's Hammer / The Skynappers
Authors: Philip K. Dick / John Brunner
Cover artists: Ed Emshwiller / Ed Valigursky

Yours for: Not for sale

AceD457

Best things about this cover:
  • Bang bang Vulcan's space-age hammer came down upon his head
  • Prototypes for the robot in "Short Circuit."
  • I think a double-flashlight pincer hammer would actually be a pretty cool tool.
  • I like to think they're little styling hammers, making our hero look fabulous.

AceD457.2

Best things about this other cover:
  • A nice visual representation of what happens Every Time I try to peel a hard-boiled egg.
  • That's some pretty sweet quintessential '60s sic-fi goodness. Best rockets always look like they came out of a kit and have a maximum of 8 parts, total.
  • They kidnapped the sky! Or else they nap on planes, not sure.

Page 123~ (from "Vulcan's Hammer")

Halfway across the Atlantic they passed an immense swarm of hammers streaking toward helpless, undefended North America.

Other continents had presciently installed anti-Vulcan's Hammer technology decades earlier. Silly North Americans.
