And if I can’t figure out the truth, everyone I love is going to die.
With BFF Courtney by my side and boyfriend Blake showing his true colours, my quiet weekend turned into a total nightmare. And somehow, it’s only the beginning…

thekeyekeeperssecret - excerpt

He was believed to be over a hundred years old, but his body was that of a very innocent-looking twelve-year-old year old Danish boy.

Something to do with a curse he’d received as a child.

His hair was blonde and fine. Eyes bluer than the sky. And little dimples appeared on each of his cheeks as he saw his nephew and smiled.

He looked exactly like the childhood pictures of Blake I’d seen in his bedroom earlier that day. Which was a little disconcerting. But something I’d have to think about later.

If I survived.

“Blake, what a surprise,” he said, “how the bloody hell are you?”

“Hi, Grandad,” Blake said.

“Is that any way to greet the patriarch of your family?” Levi Grimm said, shaking his head in mock disappointment. He didn’t seem offended. More like he was enjoying himself. “So, what is it you want from me?”

Levi Grimm was sitting on the only chair in the room in a cell with no other furniture except a small cot bed. But somehow, he was making his tiny metal chair seem like a throne.

We were all a little thrown off by his question.

“How do you know we want something?” Blake said, awkwardly.

“I don’t know, son,” Levi said, still enjoying himself, “maybe it’s because you’ve broken into my cell in the middle of the night with a whole bunch of people. Two of whom appear to be Key Keepers. It doesn’t exactly feel like a social call, does it?”

“How the bloody hell do you know we’re Key Keepers?” Walter growled.

Levi waved his hand in the air like it was nothing.

“Why, it’s written all over your faces,” Levi said, smiling. “Or should I say… your backs.”

An image of Walter’s back flashed through my head. Covered in scars with a magic-bound contract buried into his skin.

How did Levi Grimm know about that?

Did all Key Keepers have that on their backs?

Did Dorian?

Did my dad?

“We need you to raise someone,” Dorian said. “It’s very important. A matter of life and death.”

“Isn’t it always?” Levi said, in a bored tone, “you know where the body’s buried, of course?”

Dorian looked over at me. I nodded.

“Yes,” he said.

“Excellent, excellent,” Levi said, “no problem.”

Dorian looked at him suspiciously. He’d been expecting it to be more difficult than this.

We all had.

“So you’ll do it?” I said.

The idea of raising my dad from the dead had seemed kind of abstract up until that point. Just an idea.

But now I was actually in a room with a raiser, I suddenly realised I’d be seeing my father again. For the first time since he’d died.

“Sure, why not,” Levi said. “For a price.”
