Movie review: 3:10 to Yuma

This is a re-make of a 1957 Western co-starring Glenn Ford, whose role is reprised by Russell Crowe.  An excellent film. Explicit violence by the bucketful.  Several excellent performances. Great script and cinematography. Expect a resurgence in the sales of cowboy hats. Original story was written by Elmore Leonard. One of the best movies I’ve seen this year.

earthquakes in Greenland suggest faster melting; clerics pray

Link

A group of nearly 200 scientists, theologians and government officials sailed into the ice fields of the Illulissat Icefjord, the largest glacier in Greenland that is bearing the brunt of global warming….The pope delivered a message via video from the Vatican while religious leaders of Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths prayed silently.

Bush-friendly ABC didn’t carry the rest of the story, which we get from UPI:

ILULISSAT, Greenland, Sept. 8 (UPI) — Mini earthquakes and glacier acceleration on the Greenland ice cap are signs climate change is speeding up, scientists said.

The quakes are caused by giant chunks of ice breaking off the rock they have been frozen to for hundreds of years, Robert Corell, chairman of the international Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, said in Greenland Friday.

Experts met at the Ilulissat glacier in Greenland to discuss the future of the arctic, The Guardian reported, while a group representing the world’s major religions gathered to pray for Earth.

Though small in magnitude, the earthquakes bolster concerns that the entire ice shelf could collapse, causing a catastrophic change in sea levels worldwide.

The speed at which Greenland’s glaciers flow into the sea has also accelerated. The Ilulissat glacier is dumping ice chunks into the ocean at a rate of 2 meters per hour — more than three times faster than 10 years ago, the newspaper said.

Given the changes, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s current prediction sea levels will rise eight to 24 inches this century may be too low, scientists at the meeting said. Some estimate the seas may rise by more than two meters.

Shiite majority in Iraq increases every day as Sunnis depart

link

If Cheney and Bush are worried about increasing Iranian influence in Iraq, they should notice that every day the Shiite majority in Iraq is increasing by 3000-5000 just by virtue of Sunnis leaving the country. And there are only 5 million Sunnis in Iraq. If you do the math, it will only take three years before the country is largely devoid of Sunnis.

The invasion, occupation and destruction of Iraq will someday take its place in history as one of the worst aggressions of all time.

FBI spied on Americans, friends, families, without warrants

The documents indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation used secret demands for records to obtain data not only on individuals it saw as targets but also details on their “community of interest” — the network of people that the target was in contact with. The bureau stopped the practice early this year in part because of broader questions raised about its aggressive use of the records demands, which are known as national security letters, officials said.
