Last week, our rainmakers Cathy He and Joshua Choy, FMVA® spent time with #founders building for global markets from day one, investors backing expansion, and technical operators building in leading industries. Part of why Australia matters to us: it’s home to one of our Founders-in-Residence Jon Gregory, who is building for the global stage. After two exits across quant trading and connected health, and $57M+ raised, he’s now building Buildworld, turning conceptual floor plans into fabrication-ready building structures through automation. Between conversations with founders and OpenAI, one thing stood out: a new wave of AI-native builders is emerging from Australia. Next stop for Liminal: Boston with Biz Stone.
Did you know the Australian venture ecosystem has the highest capital to exit ratio in the world? An underrated fact I learnt on this trip last week. Joshua Choy, FMVA® and I spent 3 days in Sydney for Sunrise Week (by Blackbird Ventures) and we were blown away by the founder & investor community. There were bold ideas in the room, determination to GTM globally, and diverse capital support for all types of startups. Some of the key highlights were: ⒈ Pitch Day by January Capital x Accel x OpenAI x Airwallex was incredibly fun, super impressed by winner Apate.ai demonstrating how AI voice helps to fend off modern day fraud. ⒉ We at Liminal sat down with OpenAI and Crane Venture Partners during a close door lunch to answer founder questions on fundraising and GTM in different markets. ⒊ Anthropic opened its Sydney Office while identifying Australia as Top 7 countries token per capita, bringing out its global team to Sunrise. Thank you to our global partners, and every founder and investor who introduced us to the local startup scene. We truly enjoyed it - until next time Australia!

No pitching. Just real founders trading honest notes over a casual sit-down dinner about what actually happens when you're building, scaling, and breaking things at the edge. Founders only. Limited seats. May 28 | Boston Request a seat here: https://lnkd.in/gmtayVcW

Some of the best companies in the world begin with a conversation. Together with Anthropic, we brought founders and builders into a room, bridging the AI frontier and the Singapore ecosystem. No slides, no panels. Just dinner and honest conversations about how companies are now being built. As a founders’ studio, we see this shift up close. Founders are no longer layering AI into products. They’re building companies with it from day one. More rooms like this, soon.

Takeaways for founders from our Chief Builder, Sonny Vu, at CES: ▪️ Spend more time explaining why the problem is inevitable rather than the solution. ▪️ If you can lead your pitch without using buzzwords like “AI,” you might be onto a compelling story. ▪️ Accept that sales is the job. You’re selling belief to investors, hires, partners, and customers long before there’s proof. The best move isn't to do this alone but to co-build with those who have done it time and again. Watch the full panel discussion here: https://lnkd.in/g7T-A9wr
Spoke at CES about fundraising and founder realities. Audience asked, two things I shared: 1. How to contact VCs? The only intro that really matters with top investors is from a star CEO at a star company in their portfolio. Not lawyers. Not bankers. Not “a friend who knows a partner.” Such intros could even be counter-productive. 2. Founders’ #1 job: Sales. Not just customers. It’s convincing partners. Investors. Media. Employees. Team members. Even your spouse and children. In the early days, you’re asking people to believe and to build with you before there’s proof when all you have is a vision. Like it or not, this is what you’ll be doing every day.
