Navigating an Era of GNSS Uncertainty The latest IATA “Safety Risk Assessment – GNSS Radio-Frequency Interference (RFI) V5” highlights what the aviation sector has been signaling for some time. Satellite-based navigation and synchronization are experiencing growing and more complex pressure, and the trend is accelerating. In aviation, where GPS, Galileo and BeiDou support everything from flight guidance to ADS-B timing, interference events are no longer rare anomalies but part of a rising global pattern. What is important to recognize is that this challenge does not stop at aviation. The same vulnerabilities affect 5G networks, energy systems, datacenters and other critical infrastructures that increasingly depend on precise, verifiable and uninterrupted time. As interference becomes more common, the assumption of always-available satellite timing becomes a structural weakness in systems that rely on determinism, low latency and service assurance. This makes one point clear. Resilience must now be built across multiple layers, combining GNSS with terrestrial and network-based timing and giving operators and infrastructure owners observability and control when satellite signals degrade. The goal is not to replace GNSS, but to ensure that essential services remain predictable and safe when GNSS is challenged. Looking ahead, the real task is both technical and institutional. GNSS can no longer be treated as a guaranteed utility but as a vital yet fragile component of modern infrastructure. Strengthening it requires coordination across aviation, telecom and all sectors that rely on time as an operational foundation. Safety and resilience cannot rest on hope.
