Miscellany

I refreshed the blog links over in the left sidebar. Only one had to be removed due to no posts in just over a year. I added a few others I read regularly.

I've been playing on GoodReads. I much prefer Library Thing. On LT, I add a book and it's in my library. If I want to indicate I don't actually own it, I add it to the "Read, Not Owned" collection I created while adding to my LT library. Easy peasy, all part of one step. On GR, added books go onto a shelf, none of which are "Owned Books." GR has an "Owned" section, but you have to add books you've shelved to "books owned" as an additional step. If there's a way to do that at the same time I "shelve" a book on GR, I have yet to find it. So, that's an annoyance because I own pretty much all the books I read these days and want that indicated.

I've also spent hours obsessively answering/trying to answer/skipping Trivia questions on GR. Talk about addictive.

Over on Library Thing, I tried out the catalog feature being tested, that makes your library work like an opac (online public access catalog) as found on library sites. LT is offering it to small libraries for a fee, but individuals can use it for free. It gives more options for searching your own collection. Very cool!

Finally, I widened the columns here and am thinking of redoing the design, using new colors, making a new header. It's been a while since I changed to this look and the old blog is looking a bit long in the tooth. Time for a change!

Tools of the Trade

I've been adding books to my Library Thing library. When I joined the site, I added a quick hundred or so books, then most of my reference books, and since then, just the books I finish reading. But this week, I finally got started on entering all my books, and it's a daunting task as many don't have ISBNs or don't have scan-able ISBNs. If there's no cover in the database, I'm taking photos and adding them. Plus, I'm doing some quick weeding of out-of-date non-fiction and of reference books made superfluous by being too easily matched by the internet. In some ways, I feel like I'm back working.

Library Thing Fun

Still reading A Clash of Kings, so while you're all waiting with bated breath for my review of it, here's a fun article about Library Thing book tags to hold you over for a bit.

Library Thing

If you haven't tried Library Thing before, now is a good time. It's gotten a spiffy new design.

Now I'm wondering if I should update the design of this blog.

Library Thing Collections

Library Thing has added Collections. I am so going to love this. I can enter my Reading Journal there now and keep it separate from my personal library, which is good because a lot of books I've read are books I don't own.

Library Thing Widget

I'm trying Library Thing's new animated widget in the sidebar, but it's taking forever to load. If it works out, it'll be cool. Otherwise, I'll swap it out for the old one. If anyone can let me know if it's loading properly or not, I'd appreciate it. It's in the right sidebar. Thanks.

Library Thing

I've been having loads of fun scanning my books in with the cute CueCat scanner I bought from Library Thing. Entering books is so much faster now. I still have old ones I have to type in by title/author, but I was able to do a small bookcase tonight. The only books that came up with the wrong title were Quality Paperback Book Club editions. But it was well worth the $15 investment.

New Toy

This came today. I bought it at Library Thing so I can scan in my books with ISBNs. Is it cool or what? :)

Library Thing

I had some time last night to explore a bit more on Library Thing, where I currently have 88 of my books. As soon as I reach the 200 books max for a basic account, I'll pay for an upgrade. I love the site. I know there are others, but LT has a lot of librarians on it and I heard about it first. It probably is the first or close to it of the social networking book sites.

I visited some of the groups I'd joined and it was a lot of fun. I've missed message boards that are relatively easy to navigate with a lot of people posting things that interest me about books and reading. I feel as if I've found a new online home. Or come home.

I'm ShellyS over there. I might've asked before, but it's worth repeating. If you're on LT, drop a comment here with your name there. :)

About Library Thing

Library Thing is for cataloging one's library. So my collection there will reflect not my reading, but the books I'm keeping. Which means all the reviews/stars will be fairly high as I do not keep books I don't like. And it won't reflect my actual reading. I'll still need my online and offline journals for that.

So, anyone else using Library Thing?
