Malaysian Heritage: Telepuk Textile Art

During a recent visit to Karnival Komuniti Kraf 2025, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt about Telepuk textile art in Selangor for the 1๏ธโƒฃst time

Telepuk is the most glorious Malay textile & is associated with royalty & the nobility. It was especially prominent in states like Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak & Johor. Its historical significance is captured in Malay manuscripts such as Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang Chik, where it’s referred to as “perada”

In the state of Selangor, Telepuk textile is a rich fabric usually worn by the royalty & nobility members since 300 years ago. It’s widely used during the reign of the High Royal Highness Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-haj ๐Ÿ‘‘ (1938-1960) & worn by his consort the Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Jemaah

The tradition of Telepuk art has continued since the beginning of the formation of the Sultanate of Selangor in 1766, based on the discovery of cultural artifacts in the form of Telepuk stamp belonging to Raja Penuh, the son of Raja Lumu, the 1๏ธโƒฃst Sultan of Selangor. The stamp engraved with the name of Raja Penuh is kept on Daik Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

The use of Telepuk art cloth continued until the next reign. From here, the tradition of Telepuk art developed in the Selangor Palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & the use of telepuk cloth continued during the reigns of Sultan Abdul Samad Ibni Raja Abdullah (1857-1898), Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah Ibni Raja Muda Musa (1898-1938), Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1938-1942) & (1945-1960) & Sultan Musa Giatuddin Riayat Shah Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1942-1945)

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt this art technique briefly from the friendly carnival staff on duty at the carnival

This traditional technique involves creating motifs & designs on fabric, especially woven cloth, using a stamping technique with gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, often uses 24K gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf

The process started with stamp Arabic gum onto the forearm, followed by the telepuk stamp carved with motifs. The gum acts as an adhesive for the gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, which is then pressed onto the fabric

Gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf is imported from Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ for its superior quality. It’s produced in Thailand because it’s traditionally used in the royal attire of the King of Thailand ๐Ÿ‘‘

It refers to a traditional textile art that is recognized as a royal heritage & is currently in the process of being gazetted as the Official Textile Art Heritage of the State of Selangor

This art produces luxurious decorations using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fabric, which was once styled by the palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & royal families, & is now being worked on to preserve & elevate its dignity through various programs & documentation

However, no water โŒ๐Ÿ’ฆ or hand wash on Telepuk art textiles because it can damage the golden ๐Ÿ’› motifs which adorned the textile’s surface. She has understood briefly about the art of washing Telepuk textile which requires special techniques to preserve the cloth. After each wear, it’s cleaned by smoking aka โ€œBertunuโ€ in Malay language. Bertunu means drying the cloth with fragrant smoke produced from traditional ingredients burned in a steaming container & placed under a rattan trap

Traditional fragrance ingredients for making dry laundry with 7๏ธโƒฃ dried plants are Rose ๐ŸŒน, Jasmine, Kenanga, (Tpaka, Kesidang, Tanjung, Kemunting, some other woods ๐Ÿชต & fragrances eg. Agarwood, iatincana, kasturi wood, hampastebu, frankincense & white granulated sugar are impregnated. These ingredients when mixed will produce a fragrant aroma

The dry laundry process is usually done by burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ the ingredients in a large impregnating container & placed under a rattan trap. The Telepuk clothes will be placed on the rattan trap & turned over several times until all parts receive fragrant smoke & last up to 3๏ธโƒฃ months

Recognition as heritage: The Selangor State Government is actively conducting research & documentation to gazette the Telepuk art as an official state heritage. This effort is expected to be completed & gazetted in near future to ensure that this art is preserved for future generations

History & uses: This heritage art has been in Selangor for a long time & has even been a symbol of pride for the royal ๐Ÿ‘‘ family for the past 300 years. It’s used to decorate ceremonial clothing such as tanjak, samping & selendang worn for official events & weddings. Telepuk art is also used in decorating the wings of the Wau Kapal, the official Selangor kite, using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel or carved colored paper

Production process: The process involves pasting flower motifs with gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fine fabric using the woodblock technique. The attached gold tinsel gives the fabric a unique shine โœจ

Conservation efforts: The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) has launched a special book titled ‘TELEPUK, Bunga-bunga Emas Yang Dilupai’ to promote this art. Demonstrations of this art production are also held at Muzium Selangor ๐Ÿ›๏ธ to expose the public to the subtleties of this heritage traditional art

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt a deeper appreciation ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’– for the artistry, history & ongoing efforts to conserve & preserve this heritage traditions alive ~ Telepuk Textile Art

Though it’s not popular & the choice of ideas to the local fashion designers. Today younger generations, especially Malays are not familiar & unacknowledged about this Telepuk textile art as the great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Malay traditional textile art form. This preservation initiative already identified the floral motif of the Telepuk textile & led to a systematic inquiry in documenting the aesthetic values of the Malay treasure of the Malay Selangor heritage textile. It also documented & compiled the aesthetic & philosophical values of treasure of the Telepuk textile as the Selangor Malay traditional royal court fabric

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป as a handrawn art lover has gained an opportunity to learn more about this traditional art for the 1st time by having a quick short interview with Ms Rabia Karatay ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŽจ, the lecturer & artist instructor for 2๏ธโƒฃ hours workshop, together with her assistant & translator, Mr Tunahan ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ, right after her Turkish Coffee Making workshop ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ทโ˜•๏ธ at ๐Ÿ“Studio Masterpiece, Istanbul, Tรผrkiye ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท as part of the conference content with PAS 2025

Yes โœ…, so coincidentally both workshops happened at the same time at same venue ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ Read more about her wonderful experience with Turkish Coffee Making workshop via ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ทโ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐ŸŒ https://siennylovesdrawing.wordpress.com/2025/05/02/pata-annual-summit-2025-destination-experience-to-enjoy-turkish-coffee-workshop/ย

This time, she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป is gonna particularly sharing about her hands-on learning experience with The Traditional Ancient Turkish Of Ebru Marbling Art

Actually, she was having a hard time choosing which workshop to attend ie. Turkish Coffee ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท โ˜•ย  Making or Ebru Marbling Art ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ when she was asked to sign up either 1๏ธโƒฃ workshop as part of her PAS 2025 media delegate attendance

A special thanks ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’– to Mr Tunahan ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ who professionally explained & shown demonstration to SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป on how a piece of Ebru Marbling Art is artistically made;

  • 1. Preparing the “magical” โœจ water
She was told a solution of thickened water by adding the natural ingredients ~ A gum from the tragacanth plant ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ (More info via ๐ŸŒ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragacanth), natural earth pigments, cattle gall etc. is prepared in a flat tray. This creates an oily water surface which helps paint pigments float on top of the water & not get absorbed. So, she personally said it’s “magical โœจ water”
  • 2. Applying coloursย
Natural or synthetic colour pigments are dripped onto the magical โœจ water’s surface using horsehair brushes ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Yes โœ…, by using natural methods to extract colours from natural pigments, which are then mixed with a few drops of ox-gall, a kind of natural acid, before sprinkling & brushing the colours onto the oily water surface, where then they float & form swirling patterns. To allow the colour naturally spreading, not too loose to affect shapes formed
  • 3. Shaping the art designs
Then, to use tools like biz aka needles ๐Ÿชก , metal combs or horsehair brushes ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ to artistically manipulate the colours & then create intricate patterns on the oily water surface
  • 4. Transferring to paper
Once the art design is complete, a sheet of paper is carefully layer & placed onto the water, then the floating art design on top ๐Ÿ” is readily transferred to the paper. She was told it can be transferred to a fabric too
  • 5. Drying & finishing the art piece
The paper is lifted from the water & left to dry & the finished art piece can be used for decoration or other purposes. Yes โœ…, this is the so called “magical” โœจ happened, the beautifully arts created on the water surface being transferred, wow ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿคฉ

Atย the end of the demonstration, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’ฏ as an art lover got impressed that this Ebru Marbling Art is unique because it cannot be imitated or replicated

The whole Ebru Marbling Art process requires a delicate touch & precise control of the colour dyes, as well as specialized brushes ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ & tools

Yeahโ€ผ๏ธ She as an art lover had no idea Ebru Marbling Art even existed until this recent trip to Istanbul, Tรผrkiye ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท Itโ€™s a centuries-old art, indeed the art of patience & resilience which found its way to the Ottoman Empire ~ A heritage to appreciate ๐Ÿ’ฏ

It flourished & became an integral part of Turkish cultural expression by offering a form of therapy through its soothing effects on the mind & soul ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Itโ€™s an ancient Turkish ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท form of painting on water ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’งwith its roots in Turkistan, the art came to the Uighurs before being perfected by the Ottomans. Ebru Marbling Art has a long history in Tรผrkiye ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ทsince dating back to the 13th century. It continues to be practised & appreciated as a unique form of artistic expression

In 2014, this traditional ancient art was rightfully inscribed in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to highlight its importance in the cultural heritage value of Tรผrkiye ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท & its influence on art & craftsmanship globally to ensure its preservation & continuation for future generations, bravo ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿปย

Guess whatโ“โ‰๏ธ

When SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป attended the PAS 2025 Welcome Dinner ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ & Award Ceremony at ๐Ÿ“Esma Sultan Mansion, she got an exclusive chance to hand on learning experience of this ancient Turkish Ebru Marbling Art, yeahโ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜

This time, she met with the artist, Mr Kubilay Eralp Dincer ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŽจ& his teamย

He ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŽจ has explained & described that Turkish Ebru Marbling Art as a dance between the water & colour paint ๐ŸŽจ, where each artistic movement is deliberate & contributes to the formation of the final art piece. She was told during the art making process, do not touch the “magical” โœจ water & let the colours spread naturally

In traditional Ebru Marbling Art, colour paint ๐ŸŽจ is dripped onto the oily water surface prepared & a fine brush ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ or metal comb is used to create marbled patterns. After a pattern is created, a piece of paper is laid on the surface of the water. The paint adheres to the paper, creating an art marbled masterpiece

During this hands on learning session, she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป was guided that colours ๐ŸŽจ are applied using horsehair brushes ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ onto the magical โœจ surface of thickened water in a trough. The floating designs are then shaped using tools eg. Bizs ie. needles ๐Ÿชก, brushes ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ & combs

She was told that in order to obtain beautiful Ebru Marbling Art results, she needs to be patience, have a light hand ๐Ÿคš & with an open mindset ๐Ÿ˜€ to receive the unexpected art patterns forming on the magical โœจ water surface & then the whole handrawn art being ๐Ÿ’ฏ% transferred on paper

She totally agreed that this Turkish Ebru Marbling Art ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป really required an intricate skill to master it. Hence, this beautiful art skill embodies a rich cultural heritage that spans from several centuries till now

The art result is a mesmerizing, 1๏ธโƒฃ-of-a-kind design that mirrors the natural appearance of marble, hence the term “marbling”, wow ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜ฒย

Marbled paper ๐Ÿ“„ has been used as a background for calligraphy โœ๐Ÿป, religious texts & to decorate special books ๐Ÿ“š Yes โœ…, Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of creating colourful patterns by sprinkling & brushing the special colour pigments named โ€œsizeโ€onto a pan of oily “magical” water โœจ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ง & then place a sheet of paper on the water surface to transfer the colourful design painted from the water onto the paper ๐Ÿ“‘๐Ÿ“„or fabric. The art designs & effects include flowers especially tulips๐ŸŒท, foliage, ornamentation, latticework, mosques ๐Ÿ•Œ & moons ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒœ, which are being used for decoration in the traditional art of bookbinding ๐Ÿ“•๐Ÿ“š, imperial decrees, official correspondence & documents. This decorative art then spread to China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ , India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ , Persia/ Iran ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท & Anatolia of Tรผrkiye ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท

However, she wishes to learning about how to mix the oily “magical” โœจ water solution ie. A gum/ gel-like substance made from tragacanth plant ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฟ & other natural materials with water ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ง to create a viscous solution that will hold the colour pigments on the water surface

Hopefully in the future, she will earn another deeper learning opportunity about this heritage art then โ˜บ๏ธ

Let’s Support Malaysia & Singapore Joint UNESCO Nomination For Chingay Festival

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป all, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป as an art & heritage enthusiast is gonna sharing about a living heritage ~ Chingay Parade aka Chingay Festival

It’s a cultural event of the Chinese community in Johor state of Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ on the 21st day of the 1๏ธโƒฃst month of the Lunar New Year ๅ†œๅކๆญฃๆœˆๅปฟไธ€ since 1870

This festival has significant bearing to the Chinese community as it depicts the strong spirit of consensus between the 5๏ธโƒฃ dialects of Teochew ๆฝฎๅทž, Hokkien ็ฆๅปบ, Hakka ๅฎขๅฎถ, Cantonese ๅนฟๅบœ & Hainanese ๆตทๅ—. It was declared a National Cultural Heritage of Malaysia on 28 Jan 2012

More details via ๐ŸŒ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chingay_parade

Chingay in the Chinese Mandarin word โ€œๅฆ†่‰บโ€ (Zhuฤng Yรฌ) meant the art of costume & masquerade ๐ŸŽญ in the Hokkien dialect. As a collective of diverse cultural performances, Chingay embodies our shared value of multiculturalism as we come together to celebrate as one

It’s similarly practices & celebrates in Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

In Nov 2024, Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ & Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ has announced a joint effort ๐Ÿค๐Ÿป to nominate the Chingay Parade for inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

This collaboration ๐Ÿค๐Ÿป aims to recognize the parade’s cultural significance in both countries & is scheduled for submission in March 2025, both countries will jointly nominate Chingay onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as an SG60 milestone & as a joint effort ๐Ÿค๐Ÿป with Malaysia to mark 60 years of bilateral ties. This UNESCO nomination will mark a significant step in safeguarding & promoting this living heritage in both countries. Then, with a decision expected by the end of 2026

Chingay Festival showcases the shared cultural heritage of both countries while highlighting the distinctiveness of Chingay in each country. Its inclusion on the UNESCO Representative List will raise global awareness of this living heritage & would encourage more people to appreciate the different cultural traditions & diversity around the world ๐ŸŒŽ

It promotes the transmission of Chingay Festival as a living heritage: the UNESCO inscription could energise & raise interest among younger practitioners, ensuring that Chingay remains a vital part of Singaporeโ€™s & Malaysiaโ€™s cultural landscape for future generations

It would promote cultural diversity & understanding, also it cultivates a deeper sense of ownership & pride among communities. It can inspire individuals & groups to actively participate in its celebration & transmission. This increased involvement will ensure that Chingay Festival remains a living tradition, reflecting the dynamic & evolving spirit of the community

So, let’s join with SiennyLovesDrawing to support this UNESCO nomination ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ–๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ฏ

For Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ, do drop in your real-time messages to support this nomination through an official microsite via ๐ŸŒ supportchingaysg.gov.sg . SiennyLovesDrawing has shared her message below,

In addition to Malaysian locals, there are invited teams from China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ, Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ, Philippines ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ, Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ & Taiwan ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ to participate in this festival

Approximately 500K participants & spectators are expected to throng the Johor Bahru city centre to witness this upcoming Chingay parade

More than 2.7K policemen would be on duty throughout this annual Chingay Festival to take care of road closures & ensure public safety

The road closures will start from the Tiong Hua Federal Mortuary Johor Bahru, Jalan Yahya Awal traffic light, Jalan Lingkaran Dalam viaduct, Jalan Gertak Merah, Jalan Syed Mohd Mufti in front of the Tabung Haji building, Jalan Ulu Ayer Molek junction, Jalan Dato Onn, Jalan Ibrahim, Danga City Mall viaduct & end at the morgue

On 17 Feb 2025, the roads were closed from 11am to 1pm to involve the โ€˜Bringing the Temple Outโ€™ ceremony. It starts from the Johor Ancient Temple at Jalan Trus and then Jalan Ngee Heng, Jalan Tun Razak & Jalan Ulu Air Molek

Next, the road closure on 18 Feb 2025 will start from 5pm to 3am for the night parade

This time, she is excited happy to share aboutย things to do when travel to Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysiaย ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

The name of Kuala Kangsar is derived from the word “Kuala Karong-Sa” with meaning of “99 small tributaries flowing in the Perak River”. It’s derived from the majestic Kangsar tree ๐ŸŒณ lining the riverbanks, pays homage to its townโ€™s natural beauty. Legend has it that the name also signifies the presence of 99 tributaries, leaving just 1๏ธโƒฃ short of a ๐Ÿ’ฏ, hence the moniker โ€œKurang Saโ€. Also Kuala Kangsar served as the birthplace of the Sultanate of Perak & continues to be a symbol of royal heritage & tradition

It’s the royal ๐Ÿ‘‘ town of Perak, Malaysia & located at the downstream of Kangsar River where it joins the Perak River. It’s well known for its traditional Malay pottery & crafts ~ Labu Sayong, regal palaces & buildings with architectural interest, yes โœ…, aย town full of history and architectural wonders

Things To Do / Places To Visit

KZ Kraf Labu Sayong ๐Ÿบโšฑ๏ธ

Itโ€™s a recognized local Malaysian ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ heritage company in the traditional manufacture of labu sayong gourds & pottery โšฑ๏ธ๐Ÿบby Malaysian Crafts

Labu Sayongย is a kind of pumpkin-shaped pottery container ๐Ÿบโšฑ๏ธ that often a choice for storing water in the past &ย now has become more of a souvenir & home decorative item

SiennyLovesDrawing got a chance to paint ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ๐Ÿบ her own Labu Sayong during this recent visit here with themed Love Malaysia ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ in conjunction with Malaysia National Day & Malaysia Day celebrationย

Itโ€™s being made from a special clay that is now only available โœ… in a small village namedย Kampung Kepala Bendangย in Kuala Kangsar district, Perak. Yes โœ…, only this village produces this kind of special clay that it doesn’t easily crack to make labu sayong gourds & pottery ๐Ÿบ

Labu Sayong ๐Ÿบโšฑ๏ธ is carved with patterns eg. Cape flowers, paddy, cloves & some other natural motifs.ย The skill of making this labu sayong requires high โฌ†๏ธ expertise & precision of detailed manpower

She also learnt about batik sayong produced from this special clay too, amazingly unique ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’ฏ as the special clay only acts similarly to wax in producing beautiful pieces of batik clothes etc. Ohh ya…There is a fashion boutique to shopping too๐Ÿ›๏ธ ๐Ÿ›’

KZ Kraf Labu Sayong owned by its founder, Mr Mohd Pareb bin Zamari ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ผwas established & officially registered in Aug 2000ย after he himself being in the ceramics industry for over 20 years & with great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป potential & progress well in the modern ceramic crafts industry, namely porcelain & garden decoration (landscape) vases. Itโ€™s also a manufacturer & supplier of sayong vases ๐Ÿบ throughout Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

Victoria Bridge aka Enggor Bridge ๐ŸŒ‰

It’s a 351m single track railway truss bridge ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ๐ŸŒ‰ & 1๏ธโƒฃ of the oldest railway bridges in Perak state of Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ It’s positioned 12m above the surface of the Perak River

It was constructed between Dec 1897 to March 1900 by the Perak Government Railway as a crossing over the Perak River to serve the local tin & coal mining industry back then. It’s to transport the natural resources to Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ for export. It marks the inception of what was then considered the longest railway bridge & the largest project ever undertaken in Malaya, with a price tag of around $300K

It’s no longer in use since 2002 when a wider concrete girder bridge built parallel to this bridge was completed to take over its role of handling rail traffic. NOW it’s being converted into a famous tourist attraction in Perak state of Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ While the locals here still utilise its pedestrian crossings on both sides of the Victoria Bridge to traverse the river

In 2016, this bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ was officially registered & gazetted as a National Heritage site under the Department of National Heritage Malaysia

Personally to SiennyLovesDrawing, this is a nice OOTDs spot to enjoy posing moments with travel mates ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคณ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป A special thanks to Mr Hafiz ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธof Gaya Travel team who captured lots of beautiful shots

The town of Tanjong Malim is located in the south of the state of Perak, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Itโ€™s close to the border of the state of Selangor, Malaysia & located approximately 70 km north of Kuala Lumpur city

Tanjung Malim is located right on the north side of Sungai Bernam. Tanjung Malim Street Art

Street Art has always been a popular tourist destination, especially the impressive art paintings or murals on the walls of a building

Tanjung Malim Street Art ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ actually located behind the old shop lots & old buildings in Jalan Douglas & Jalan Rumah Rehat, Tanjung Malim which were built before independence

All visitors can take pictures & interact with the murals here. Every painting has an implicit meaning. Some are related to the history of Perak state & Malaysia

Where To Eat

Sarang Art Hub ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Itโ€™s a hipster cafe established in 2016 by the late Mr Mamat Khalid, a talented Malaysian film director whose works in particular horror comedy films & drama series have already stayed in the memory of many Malaysians. His passing is not only a great loss to the national film industry but also to the people around Tanjung Malim ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

Some of his well known works to name a few are Zombie Kampung Pisang, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, Man Laksa, Rombongan Cik Kiah Ke Sukan Komanwel etc.

Itโ€™s located at the Rest House of Tanjung Malim. There are a lot of movie props hung up to decorate the cafe. This cafe that is made into an art centre has the special benefit of cooperation from the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government. It was then turned into an art hub for young people with attractive decorations & an art gallery, cafe & art workshop

Since then, itโ€™s being developed by the deceased has also become the focus of art lovers, including local artists, until the town of Tanjung Malim, which was quite quiet before especially during night time now has become the focus of the local here

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป & her travel mates choose a seating area near its entrance & surrounded with movie posters & even somewhat creepy ghost dolls

The interior layout of this cafe is decorated with many unique & artistic arts, yes โœ…, various types of art such as sculpture art, design art, fine art, music art & food art etc.

This cafe serves local & western foods. Personally, she enjoyed the pasta ๐Ÿ, chicken chop with its tasty delicious signature sauce served here ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ’ฏ

Things To Do @ Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia

Hmm…Time flies & now the start of last quarter in 2024, happy September to all ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿฅณ

Yeahโ€ผ๏ธย  SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜ is excited happy to share about things to do when travel to Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

Teluk Intan in the early days, it was known as Teluk Mak Intan, yes โœ…, named after a female Mandailing trader that the Perak rulers held court from 1528 until Kuala Kangsar became the royal town in 1877. Then, during the British ๐Ÿ’‚๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง protectorate era, it was changed to Teluk Anson (Anson Bay) in honour of a British officer & last lieutenant-governor of Penang, Major-General Sir Archibald Edward Harbord Anson, who drew the plan of its modern township in 1882. Subsequently, in 1982 during the centenary of the town’s establishment, this town name was changed again to Teluk Intan (Diamond Bay) by the Sultan of Perak at that time

Things To Do / Places To Visit

Leaning Tower aka Menara Condong Teluk Intan

It’s a landmark clock leaning tower built in 1885 by a contractor named Mr Leong Choon Chong as a national monument & notable because it then leans towards the southwest direction later. This tower stood at 25m with 110 steps & not as tall compared to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น which stood at 55m

Originally it housed the water tank that supply water ๐Ÿ’ฆ to the town area & reserve during drought & fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ It was also used to report time & served as a beacon to guide ship ๐Ÿšข into Telok Anson Port โš“ It’s no longer in use & with empty water tank, hence the locals here suspected because of the heavy water tank became empty & causing the tower leaning to side

It’s NOW a main attraction๐Ÿ“ in Teluk Intan Town of Perak state ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ for both local & international tourists as it filled with detailed information regarding Teluk Intan’s history as well as the backstory of this tower. The chiming clock ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ which was being installed on this tower in 1894 was bought from London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง & designed by Mr J.W. Benson-Ludgathy ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Another similar clock by him is on the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ticket is required ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธโœ… to enter to explore this historical clock tower, even go up to the top of the tower to take photos/ videos ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ“น

River Cruise Teluk Intan ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ

It’s truly amazing ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป to experience the hidden gem of this humble town in Perak state, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ by river cruising & appreciating the nature with rich flora & fauna here

This river cruise ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธcruising through Teluk Intan River to explore & travel Pekan Teluk Intan, observing the migratory birds at Pulau Bangau aka crans island ๐Ÿ๏ธ & birds habitat ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿฆœ, historical monument in the middle of the river such as Seabed Locomotive etc.

Also to observe the river fisher’s activities ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŸ, watch the manufacture of boats vessels ๐Ÿšค, watching local people crossing the river etc. Just that not enough low water tide to see the well known Seabed Locomotive during her recent river cruising journey here

Hmmโ€ฆPersonally, SiennyLovesDrawing learnt so much about the history of Teluk Intan & would recommend this river cruise for sunset viewing ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ๐ŸŒ…ย  in the evening or for fireflies at night. This is especially good as an educational river cruise for school kids ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿป

She enjoyed her river cruising & passed by a floating restaurant, East Sea Dragon King Temple โ›ฉ๏ธ named Hock Soon Keong Temple, historical old jetty โš“, old Anson Port, old court ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš–๏ธ, deep sea fishing boat factory, Tilapia fish farm, Pulau Bangau gazetted migratory birds sanctuary, offshore platform built for fishing ๐ŸŽฃย  etc.
