PAS 2025 with theme ~ “Timeless Wisdom for a Sustainable Future” ~ To explore how enduring cultural insights & sustainable practices can shape the future of tourism 💯👍🏻
SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 as a handrawn art lover has gained an opportunity to learn more about this traditional art for the 1st time by having a quick short interview with Ms Rabia Karatay 👩🏼🎨, the lecturer & artist instructor for 2️⃣ hours workshop, together with her assistant & translator, Mr Tunahan 🙋🏻♂️, right after her Turkish Coffee Making workshop 🇹🇷☕️ at 📍Studio Masterpiece, Istanbul, Türkiye 🇹🇷 as part of the conference content with PAS 2025
Yes ✅, so coincidentally both workshops happened at the same time at same venue 😃😁 Read more about her wonderful experience with Turkish Coffee Making workshop via 👩🏻🇹🇷☕️💯👍🏻🌐 https://siennylovesdrawing.wordpress.com/2025/05/02/pata-annual-summit-2025-destination-experience-to-enjoy-turkish-coffee-workshop/

This time, she 👩🏻 is gonna particularly sharing about her hands-on learning experience with The Traditional Ancient Turkish Of Ebru Marbling Art
Actually, she was having a hard time choosing which workshop to attend ie. Turkish Coffee 🇹🇷 ☕ Making or Ebru Marbling Art 🎨🖌️ when she was asked to sign up either 1️⃣ workshop as part of her PAS 2025 media delegate attendance
A special thanks 🙏🏻💖 to Mr Tunahan 🙋🏻♂️ who professionally explained & shown demonstration to SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 on how a piece of Ebru Marbling Art is artistically made;
- 1. Preparing the “magical” ✨ water
She was told a solution of thickened water by adding the natural ingredients ~ A gum from the tragacanth plant 🌿🌱 (More info via 🌐 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragacanth), natural earth pigments, cattle gall etc. is prepared in a flat tray. This creates an oily water surface which helps paint pigments float on top of the water & not get absorbed. So, she personally said it’s “magical ✨ water” - 2. Applying colours
Natural or synthetic colour pigments are dripped onto the magical ✨ water’s surface using horsehair brushes 🖌️ Yes ✅, by using natural methods to extract colours from natural pigments, which are then mixed with a few drops of ox-gall, a kind of natural acid, before sprinkling & brushing the colours onto the oily water surface, where then they float & form swirling patterns. To allow the colour naturally spreading, not too loose to affect shapes formed - 3. Shaping the art designs
Then, to use tools like biz aka needles 🪡 , metal combs or horsehair brushes 🖌️ to artistically manipulate the colours & then create intricate patterns on the oily water surface - 4. Transferring to paper
Once the art design is complete, a sheet of paper is carefully layer & placed onto the water, then the floating art design on top 🔝 is readily transferred to the paper. She was told it can be transferred to a fabric too - 5. Drying & finishing the art piece
The paper is lifted from the water & left to dry & the finished art piece can be used for decoration or other purposes. Yes ✅, this is the so called “magical” ✨ happened, the beautifully arts created on the water surface being transferred, wow 😲🤩
Ms Rabia Karatay 👩🏼🎨 has rolled up the Ebru Marbling Art piece demonstrated by Mr Tunahan 🙋🏻♂️during the interview as a gift 💝🎁👩🏻 to SiennyLovesDrawing at the end of this short interview, thank you so much 🙏🏻💖 for this pleasant surprise

At the end of the demonstration, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻💖💯 as an art lover got impressed that this Ebru Marbling Art is unique because it cannot be imitated or replicated
The whole Ebru Marbling Art process requires a delicate touch & precise control of the colour dyes, as well as specialized brushes 🖌️ & tools
Yeah‼️ She as an art lover had no idea Ebru Marbling Art even existed until this recent trip to Istanbul, Türkiye 🇹🇷 It’s a centuries-old art, indeed the art of patience & resilience which found its way to the Ottoman Empire ~ A heritage to appreciate 💯
It flourished & became an integral part of Turkish cultural expression by offering a form of therapy through its soothing effects on the mind & soul 🧘🏻♀️😌
It’s an ancient Turkish 🇹🇷 form of painting on water 💦💧with its roots in Turkistan, the art came to the Uighurs before being perfected by the Ottomans. Ebru Marbling Art has a long history in Türkiye 🇹🇷since dating back to the 13th century. It continues to be practised & appreciated as a unique form of artistic expression
In 2014, this traditional ancient art was rightfully inscribed in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to highlight its importance in the cultural heritage value of Türkiye 🇹🇷 & its influence on art & craftsmanship globally to ensure its preservation & continuation for future generations, bravo 😍🤩🙌🏻👏🏻
Guess what❓⁉️
When SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 attended the PAS 2025 Welcome Dinner 🍽️ & Award Ceremony at 📍Esma Sultan Mansion, she got an exclusive chance to hand on learning experience of this ancient Turkish Ebru Marbling Art, yeah‼️😃😁
This time, she met with the artist, Mr Kubilay Eralp Dincer 👨🏼🎨& his team
He 👨🏼🎨 has explained & described that Turkish Ebru Marbling Art as a dance between the water & colour paint 🎨, where each artistic movement is deliberate & contributes to the formation of the final art piece. She was told during the art making process, do not touch the “magical” ✨ water & let the colours spread naturally
In traditional Ebru Marbling Art, colour paint 🎨 is dripped onto the oily water surface prepared & a fine brush 🖌️ or metal comb is used to create marbled patterns. After a pattern is created, a piece of paper is laid on the surface of the water. The paint adheres to the paper, creating an art marbled masterpiece
During this hands on learning session, she 👩🏻 was guided that colours 🎨 are applied using horsehair brushes 🖌️ onto the magical ✨ surface of thickened water in a trough. The floating designs are then shaped using tools eg. Bizs ie. needles 🪡, brushes 🖌️ & combs
She was told that in order to obtain beautiful Ebru Marbling Art results, she needs to be patience, have a light hand 🤚 & with an open mindset 😀 to receive the unexpected art patterns forming on the magical ✨ water surface & then the whole handrawn art being 💯% transferred on paper
She totally agreed that this Turkish Ebru Marbling Art 👩🏻🖌️💯👍🏻 really required an intricate skill to master it. Hence, this beautiful art skill embodies a rich cultural heritage that spans from several centuries till now

The art result is a mesmerizing, 1️⃣-of-a-kind design that mirrors the natural appearance of marble, hence the term “marbling”, wow 🤩😲
Marbled paper 📄 has been used as a background for calligraphy ✍🏻, religious texts & to decorate special books 📚 Yes ✅, Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of creating colourful patterns by sprinkling & brushing the special colour pigments named “size”onto a pan of oily “magical” water ✨💦💧 & then place a sheet of paper on the water surface to transfer the colourful design painted from the water onto the paper 📑📄or fabric. The art designs & effects include flowers especially tulips🌷, foliage, ornamentation, latticework, mosques 🕌 & moons 🌝🌜, which are being used for decoration in the traditional art of bookbinding 📕📚, imperial decrees, official correspondence & documents. This decorative art then spread to China 🇨🇳 , India 🇮🇳 , Persia/ Iran 🇮🇷 & Anatolia of Türkiye 🇹🇷
However, she wishes to learning about how to mix the oily “magical” ✨ water solution ie. A gum/ gel-like substance made from tragacanth plant 🌱🌿 & other natural materials with water 💦💧 to create a viscous solution that will hold the colour pigments on the water surface
Hopefully in the future, she will earn another deeper learning opportunity about this heritage art then ☺️
