Malaysian Heritage: Telepuk Textile Art

During a recent visit to Karnival Komuniti Kraf 2025, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt about Telepuk textile art in Selangor for the 1️⃣st time

Telepuk is the most glorious Malay textile & is associated with royalty & the nobility. It was especially prominent in states like Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak & Johor. Its historical significance is captured in Malay manuscripts such as Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang Chik, where it’s referred to as “perada”

In the state of Selangor, Telepuk textile is a rich fabric usually worn by the royalty & nobility members since 300 years ago. It’s widely used during the reign of the High Royal Highness Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-haj 👑 (1938-1960) & worn by his consort the Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Jemaah

The tradition of Telepuk art has continued since the beginning of the formation of the Sultanate of Selangor in 1766, based on the discovery of cultural artifacts in the form of Telepuk stamp belonging to Raja Penuh, the son of Raja Lumu, the 1️⃣st Sultan of Selangor. The stamp engraved with the name of Raja Penuh is kept on Daik Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia 🇮🇩

The use of Telepuk art cloth continued until the next reign. From here, the tradition of Telepuk art developed in the Selangor Palace 👑 & the use of telepuk cloth continued during the reigns of Sultan Abdul Samad Ibni Raja Abdullah (1857-1898), Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah Ibni Raja Muda Musa (1898-1938), Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1938-1942) & (1945-1960) & Sultan Musa Giatuddin Riayat Shah Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1942-1945)

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt this art technique briefly from the friendly carnival staff on duty at the carnival

This traditional technique involves creating motifs & designs on fabric, especially woven cloth, using a stamping technique with gold 💛 leaf, often uses 24K gold 💛 leaf

The process started with stamp Arabic gum onto the forearm, followed by the telepuk stamp carved with motifs. The gum acts as an adhesive for the gold 💛 leaf, which is then pressed onto the fabric

Gold 💛 leaf is imported from Thailand 🇹🇭 for its superior quality. It’s produced in Thailand because it’s traditionally used in the royal attire of the King of Thailand 👑

It refers to a traditional textile art that is recognized as a royal heritage & is currently in the process of being gazetted as the Official Textile Art Heritage of the State of Selangor

This art produces luxurious decorations using gold 💛 tinsel on fabric, which was once styled by the palace 👑 & royal families, & is now being worked on to preserve & elevate its dignity through various programs & documentation

However, no water ❌💦 or hand wash on Telepuk art textiles because it can damage the golden 💛 motifs which adorned the textile’s surface. She has understood briefly about the art of washing Telepuk textile which requires special techniques to preserve the cloth. After each wear, it’s cleaned by smoking aka “Bertunu” in Malay language. Bertunu means drying the cloth with fragrant smoke produced from traditional ingredients burned in a steaming container & placed under a rattan trap

Traditional fragrance ingredients for making dry laundry with 7️⃣ dried plants are Rose 🌹, Jasmine, Kenanga, (Tpaka, Kesidang, Tanjung, Kemunting, some other woods 🪵 & fragrances eg. Agarwood, iatincana, kasturi wood, hampastebu, frankincense & white granulated sugar are impregnated. These ingredients when mixed will produce a fragrant aroma

The dry laundry process is usually done by burning 🔥 the ingredients in a large impregnating container & placed under a rattan trap. The Telepuk clothes will be placed on the rattan trap & turned over several times until all parts receive fragrant smoke & last up to 3️⃣ months

Recognition as heritage: The Selangor State Government is actively conducting research & documentation to gazette the Telepuk art as an official state heritage. This effort is expected to be completed & gazetted in near future to ensure that this art is preserved for future generations

History & uses: This heritage art has been in Selangor for a long time & has even been a symbol of pride for the royal 👑 family for the past 300 years. It’s used to decorate ceremonial clothing such as tanjak, samping & selendang worn for official events & weddings. Telepuk art is also used in decorating the wings of the Wau Kapal, the official Selangor kite, using gold 💛 tinsel or carved colored paper

Production process: The process involves pasting flower motifs with gold 💛 tinsel on fine fabric using the woodblock technique. The attached gold tinsel gives the fabric a unique shine ✨

Conservation efforts: The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) has launched a special book titled ‘TELEPUK, Bunga-bunga Emas Yang Dilupai’ to promote this art. Demonstrations of this art production are also held at Muzium Selangor 🏛️ to expose the public to the subtleties of this heritage traditional art

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt a deeper appreciation 🙏🏻💖 for the artistry, history & ongoing efforts to conserve & preserve this heritage traditions alive ~ Telepuk Textile Art

Though it’s not popular & the choice of ideas to the local fashion designers. Today younger generations, especially Malays are not familiar & unacknowledged about this Telepuk textile art as the great 👍🏻 Malay traditional textile art form. This preservation initiative already identified the floral motif of the Telepuk textile & led to a systematic inquiry in documenting the aesthetic values of the Malay treasure of the Malay Selangor heritage textile. It also documented & compiled the aesthetic & philosophical values of treasure of the Telepuk textile as the Selangor Malay traditional royal court fabric

Things To Do @ Sukhothai, Northern Thailand

Hey 👋🏻 all, continue from SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻👩🏻‍💻✍🏻 earlier blog stories about her recent Loy Kratong Sai Festival celebration 🇹🇭🥳🎉🎊 at Tak province, Northern Thailand. Do read more via 🌐 https://siennylovesdrawing.wordpress.com/2025/11/05/loy-kratong-festival-celebration-at-tak-thailand/

She has also visited Sukhothhai สุโขทัย, Northern Thailand 🇹🇭 with her travel mates during the trip

Yeah‼️ As a heritage & culture enthusiast, she was so excited happy 😁 to travel & visit this UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. Yes ✅, it was a surprise arrangement 😃🥰

It’s within just 1.5 hrs drive 🚐🚗 from Tak province

Ohh ya…There are daily direct domestic flights ✈️ 🛫 from Bangkok to reach Sukhothai 💯👍🏻

Sukhothai is the Thai Kingdom’s 🇹🇭👑 1️⃣st capital with a lasting cultural & architectural legacy

It has received designation as a 🆕 Creative City of Crafts & Folk Art. Also it was the political & administrative capital of the 1️⃣st Kingdom of Siam in the 13th & 15th centuries, wow 😲

In this blog story, she 👩🏻l👩🏻‍💻✍🏻 is gonna sharing a list of things to do to explore from her half a day travel experience at Sukhothai

Things To Do / Places To Visit

Si Satchanalai Historical Park อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย

This park is in the northwest to protect the mountainous forest areas ⛰️🌳🌳 of the Phi Pan Nam Range at the northern end of the province. It’s proclaimed as a national park on 8 May 1981. There are archaeological evidence suggests that this ancient city used to be a center for ceramic 🏺 trade with China 🇨🇳

This 45sqm historical park is home to remaining structures of which used to be palaces 👑 🏰, temples 🛕 & homes 🏘️ in the ancient Si Satchanalai City ie. 2️⃣nd largest city after Sukhothai during its glory days in Thailand 🇹🇭✨

There are 28 temples 🛕🏛️ in this Unesco World Heritage Park, SiennyLovesDrawing & travel mates 👩🏻🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻👭🏻👬🏻👫🏻 only visited 3️⃣ temples during this recent visit

Hmm…In her next visit, she 🚴🏻‍♀️ is gonna spend whole day or perhaps 2️⃣ full days to slowly cycling 🚴‍♀️/ walking 🚶🏻‍♀️ to explore more ancient ruins & temples 🛕 in this park to appreciate the well preserve history & heritage here 😍🤩

✅ Wat Nang Phaya 👸🛕วัดนางพญา

Aka The Temple of Queen 👸🛕, its main chedi is a round chedi with a stairway & arch on each sides

It’s well known for its delicate stucco reliefs which displayed the art influences from Chinese 🇨🇳 & Lanna cultures on its ancient remains ie. The northwestern wall of its 7️⃣-roomed building/ wihan / vihara built of laterite blocks & limestone plaster. In fact, she has read from the internet 👩🏻‍💻 when she researched about this ancient temple 🛕 that the local goldsmiths actually use this said stucco pattern from Wat Nang Phaya 🛕 to design & make the famous souvenir 🎁💝 ~ “Ancient Gold of Si Satchanalai

This ancient temple 🛕 with pillars decorated with unglazed ceramic designs. The central laterite stupa is surrounded by lamp-posts & accessible by a set narrow stairway. Also its ordination hall / ubosot / ubosotha that is behind the main chedi & next to the bases of 2️⃣ chedi ruins

✅ Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo วัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถว

Its name meant the temple of the 7️⃣ rows of chedi

With prominent ancient structure of this large temple 🛕 of having 32 stupas of different sizes in different styles. Its other buildings arranged in an orderly fashion to demonstrate the cosmological principle

The beauty & the variety of forms of the stupas led Prince Damrong Rajanubhab 👑 to presume that this temple was the royal cemetery 👑🪦 or the place for keeping the relics of the royal families of the Sukhothai dynasty

The stupa forms at this wat are categorized into 3️⃣ groups;

  • 1️⃣st group ~ The budding-lotus 🪷 shaped stupa that represents the uniqueness of Sukhothai art. It has a slim & tall form. The square-shaped lowest base is made into a stepped footing. Above the stepped lowest base are multi-tiered square ◻️ & octagonal bases decorated with pointed torus moldings to support the budding-lotus-design finial decorated with a conical-shaped spire
  • 2️⃣nd group ~ The prasat-style square-shaped stupa with a multi-tier roof & are presumably influenced by the arts of external communities, such as Lanna & ancient Khmer 🇰🇭
  • 3️⃣rd group ~ The bell-shaped 🔔 stupa decorated with torus moldings under the bell-shaped part. The top part assumes a conical shape. Presumably, this type of stupa originated from the ancient Indian 🇮🇳 burial ceremony where the hemispherical burial mound is created & decorated on top with the Chatra
✅ Wat Chang Lom 🐘 วัดช้างล้อม

This wat is located right opposite of the Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo. Its name meant temple surrounded by elephants 🐘🐘 It was built in the Sukhothai period, or around the mid-13th century to the late 14th century. Its large sized & located in the center of Si Satchanalai town

It was presumed to be built by King Ramlamhaeng 👑 in 1285 following the excavation of the relics of the Lord Buddha & a period of public worshipping & celebration 🎊 🎉 of the relics for 1️⃣month & 6️⃣ days. The relics then were buried underground at the center of the town, the stupa was built over the buried site & the wall was erected to surround the site. The construction took a total of 9️⃣ years to complete

It was built between 1340 & 1350 by Sukhothai King Lithai 👑, surrounded by a boundary wall with 4️⃣ gates. There are numerous monuments in various styles, a vihara, a principal chedi & 32 small ones

The bell-shaped 🔔 principal stupa is placed on the 2️⃣-story Pradakshina base that is designed for Budhist devotees to walk 🚶🏻‍♀️in a clockwise 🔃 🔁 direction. The lower story is surrounded with 39 standing elephant 🐘 sculptures & has a stairway connected to the upper story. Around the upper story, there are 20 niches filled with 1.4 m high enshrining Buddha images in the attitude of subduing Mara. Above the pradakshina base is the bell-shaped 🔔 body of the stupa constructed on the circular ⭕ bases decorated with torus moldings

Above the bell-shaped 🔔 body, there are the square ⬜ throne & the Kan Chat (The round-pillar-shaped structure) decorated with the low relief of the Buddha images in the walking 🚶🏻‍♀️posture

The tradition of building a stupa with the surrounding elephant 🐘 sculptures originated in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 in the 3️⃣rd century & the Sukhothai kingdom probably adopted this tradition around the 14th century in the reign of King Maha Thammaracha Lithai 👑

The concept of the elephant 🐘 sculptures surrounding the stupa base is presumably derived from the Buddhist ☸️ concept that the elephant is an auspicious animal that takes the role of supporting Buddhism & is deemed 1️⃣ of the 108 auspicious items

Places To Visit

Moon Hil 月亮山 🌕🌙⛰️

It got its name for a big hole penetrating it on the top & it looks like a moon 🌕🌙 from a distance. With a shape of arch, the hole is about 50m in width & height. There are many stalactites hanging in the hole

On a sunny 🌞 day, tourists can see blue 🩵 sky & white clouds ☁️ through the hole. There is a little path at the foot of the hill foot, so tourists can walk through the path to appreciate the Moon Hole on it from different angles. Just a 15mins walking🚶🏻‍♀️

By following the marble steps (Over 800 steps in total) to the hilltop, tourists can climb on this hill 🌕🌙⛰️ to observe the hole from a close distance. Generally, approximately 1️⃣ hour to finish the climbing 🧗

SiennyLovesDrawing & travel mates enjoyed OOTDs with this hill as backdrop 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻👭🏻👬🏻👫🏻📸🤳🏻🌕🌙⛰️ & didn’t hike 🥾 to the hill top during this recent visit

Fubo Hill Scenic Area 🏞️ 伏波山景区

It’s a solitary peak beside the water base located on the bank of the Li River in Guilin, China 🇨🇳Yes ✅, half of it is on the land & half of it is inserted into the river pool by blocking the ripples, hence it’s well known as the “Fubo Scenic Spot”

It was named after General Fubo Ma Yuan, who passed by here during the Han Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, General Fubo’s Courtyard was built on the mountain. There are many scenic spots eg. Guishui Pavilion, Tingtao Pavilion, Banshan Pavilion, Huanzhu Cave 还珠洞, Mi Fu’s Self-Portrait, Sword Testing Stone, Coral Rock & Thousand Buddha Rock 🪨

In Feb 2017, the National Tourism Administration has publicly approved & awarded it as the national 5A scenic spot with “2️⃣ Rivers & 4️⃣ Lakes * Xiangshan Scenic Area

A 1️⃣st-level terrace garden landscape ~ Fubo Scenic Spot. Fubo Mountain ⛰️ is a solitary peak, half of which is inserted into the river pool & the other half is on land. Every spring & summer, the river water surges & the foothills block the rapid waves, causing the river water to reverse & swirl, which has the power to subdue the waves 🌊

Fubo Mountain ⛰️ has beautiful scenery & unique caves

On the east side of the mountain ⛰️ are the riverside corridor, Fubo Tea 🫖☕️ House & Tingtao Pavilion built on the cliff

While on the west side, there are stone steps to reach the half-mountain pavilion & the top of the mountain. Looking up, tourists can view the picturesque water & mountains of Guilin

Professor Lin Xiang Xiong Hosts Landmark Art Exhibition & Peace Prize Ceremony in Paris

Hey 👋🏻 all, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻💖👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️ as an art lover is gonna sharing that the renowned humanitarian-artist Professor Lin Xiang Xiong 👨🏻‍💼 (“Professor Lin”) & founder of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Penang, presented his latest exhibition, “The Vicissitudes of Life”, at the historic Hôtel de l’Industrie in Paris 🇫🇷 from 10 to 13 Sept 2025

Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼is a renowned artist, entrepreneur & advocate for global security through art

As President of the Global Chinese Arts & Culture Association, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Art & a visiting Professor at Peking University, Professor Lin’s work crosses disciplines & borders, connecting 🔄 Eastern & Western cultures

After leaving China 🇨🇳 for Singapore 🇸🇬 in 1956, Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼 pursued art studies at the Academy of Arts (1965–1968). Success in business, particularly in the mining industry in Malaysia 🇲🇾, funded his travels, art remained his personal refuge & lifelong passion

His painting 🎨 🖌️ style is a dynamic combination of abstraction, traditional techniques & contemporary social commentary, touching on themes such as climate change, war, forced migration & the human condition. Despite being involved in the commercial field, Lin has never neglected his commitment to art as a force for good 💯👍🏻

Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼 is an outspoken advocate of the power of the arts in promoting peace 🕊️ & unity 🙌🏻 In 2016, he curated a UNESCO exhibition titled “Art for Peace – Cultural Dialogue between East &/ West”, which calls on artists to rise ⬆️ up as peacemakers, reduce ⬇️ inequality & protect the planet 🌏 These events resulted in important cultural dialogues that have been documented & archived by UNESCO

Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼 has published numerous works, including 8️⃣ collections of paintings & 27 volumes of essay & art criticism

This recent exhibition received strong support 💪🏻🙌🏻💯 from key French institutions, with former French President François Hollande 🇫🇷👨🏼‍💼 serving as Honorary Patron & former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin personally attending the opening

Featuring 25 original works by Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼, the exhibition explored 3️⃣ themes ~ Anti-war, anti-poverty & anti-pollution & vividly embodied Professor Lin’s vision of “Art for Peace 🕊️” , a concept that transcends aesthetics & seeks to inspire moral reflection & intercultural understanding

During the exhibition, a high-level academic symposium was held, bringing together leading international scholars, philosophers & cultural leaders to reflect on “Intercultural Dialogue at the Crossroads” & “Rebuilding the Concept of Peace through Art”. Distinguished speakers included French writer & human rights activist Marek Halter, eminent philosopher & sinologist François Jullien, intellectual publisher François L’Yvonnet, Swiss curator & sociologist Barbara Polla, special adviser to the President of the Arab World Institute Claude Mollard, cultural diplomacy advisor Yves Marek & retired French Air Force General Étienne Copel. Throughout the discussions, Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼 shared his unique insights on the times, on art & on the essence of peace 🕊️, sparking strong resonance & deep dialogue 💯👍🏻

On 12 Sept 2025, the inaugural “Lin Xiang Xiong Art for Peace Prize” ceremony was held with great success 💯👍🏻 The competition drew 1,883 entries from 💯 countries around the world 🌎, far exceeding expectations. This overwhelming response underscored the wide recognition of Professor Lin’s 👨🏻‍💼 “Art for Peace” advocacy, echoing the common aspirations of today’s world. Professor Lin announced that the award 🏆 will be established as a biennial event, continuing as a major artistic initiative dedicated to peace 🕊️

“The Vicissitudes of Life” Celebrates 🥳🎉🎊 the Transformative Power of Art in Dialogue, Reflection & Peace 🕊️ building

“This exhibition is more of an awakening of thought than a presentation of art,” said Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼

“Every brush 🖌️ stroke is a testimony of time, a silent dialogue between past & present, pain & healing. Whether through the exhibition or the establishment of the Peace Prize 🕊️🏆, I hope art is not merely for admiration but can truly touch hearts 💕, serve as a bridge between cultures & awaken the soft conscience deep within humanity.”

The exhibition also marks a milestone in Professor Lin’s artistic journey & heralds the opening of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Penang, scheduled for mid-Dec 2025. Covering 8️⃣K square meters, the gallery will house Professor Lin’s 👨🏻‍💼 major works & also providing a platform for emerging artists to pursue their dreams. It will stand as 1️⃣ of the largest private art galleries in the region, strengthening Malaysia’s 🇲🇾 role as a hub of cultural diplomacy & intercultural understanding in Southeast Asia 🌏

Through “The Vicissitudes of Life” , Professor Lin 👨🏻‍💼 once again demonstrates that art is a messenger of thought & conscience

With clarity, he advocates peace 🕊️ & as an artist, he chooses his own path through the soft power of culture, through words & through his brush 🖌️ to voice his deep concern for war, pollution & poverty

With art as his language, he calls upon fellow artists to join his cause, uniting their strength to speak out for peace & the future of humanity
