House of Opium Museum พิพิธภัณฑ์บ้านฝิ่น

It’s a small private 2️⃣-storey museum being established since year 1989 by Mrs. Phatcharee Srimathayakun 🧑🏽‍🦳 who was born in this Chiang Saen district of Chiang Rai province 🇹🇭 When she noted that opium artefacts were becoming extremely hard to find due to Thailand cracking down on the illegal drug trade, she then transformed its collection into a museum & open to the public

It aims to educate all about opium with its detailed exhibition that portrays every angle of the history of the Golden Triangle 🔺, the origin of opium, the opium war, opium warlords, drug smugglers, opium effects, the battle against opium & poppy growing, to rehabilitation of living conditions of the local Thai people who live in the central of the Golden Triangle 🔺, the former worldwide infamous drug trading zone

It owns the largest collection in Asia’ of Opium Paraphernalia & it features below zones in the museum:

Level 1️⃣ (Downstairs)

• Entrance Zone: A 137m long dark tunnel towards an artificial poppy field in Hall Zone
• Hall Zone: An artificial poppy field to learn about various species of poppy flowers
• Siam Zone: A mock-up of a Chinese tea house in Yaowarat where local people came to smoke opium & the story about the origin of opium in Siam
• Magic Medicine Zone: The science behinds the development of morphine & heroin
• Opium Effects Zone: The adverse impact of drugs & drug addictions on individuals & the society

& Level 2️⃣ (Upstairs) ~ The exhibition of marijuana & tobacco exhibitions by displaying over 200 pipes & bongs. Also exhibition about the giant catfish 🐟 history & some small tribes in Northern Thailand 🇹🇭

SiennyLovesDrawing was amazed 👩🏻🤩 with how extensive & impressive collection of more than 2️⃣K exhibited objects about the ancient time opium trade activities in the Golden Triangle 🔺

It includes opium harvesting knives 🔪, opium scales, opium weights, opium smoking pipes, opium smoking pillows etc. Many of these artefacts exhibited are over 200 years old & being collected from areas within Thailand 🇹🇭 & its neighbouring countries ie. Laos 🇱🇦 , Myanmar 🇲🇲 , China 🇨🇳 & Vietnam 🇻🇳 

She has learnt about Akha Hill Tribe’s Legend: Birth of Opium from her recent visit to this museum. A long time ago, there was a young Akha woman of great beauty 🙋🏻‍♀️🥰 She was desired by young men 👬🏻👬🏻 from all over. Among these young men, 7️⃣ were most impressed by her. 1️⃣ day all 7️⃣ came to propose to her at the same time. The woman was reluctant to choose a man for fear of upsetting the rest & decided to make love to them all. This sacrifice would lead her to death, but before she died, she asked her relatives to take good care of her grave 🪦 She promised her soil would give birth to the most beautiful flower 🌸 from where her heart ❤️ lay & anyone who tasted its nectar would be so consumed, they would need more. She warned: Be careful, for this flower would bear both good & evil

Another legend describes a gorgeous young Akha woman 🙋🏻‍♀️ from long ago. Despite her great beauty 🥰, she had the misfortune of having such strong body odor that no man wanted to come close to her. Therefore, the young woman lived a miserable & lonely life. Before she died of a broken heart 💔 she requested that her neighbours take good care of her grave 🪦 Out of her grave grew-the most magnificent flower. When 1️⃣ tasted of the pod of this flower they would become so enchanted by it they would desire to taste it over & over again. However, this fruit they found offered not only strange pleasure but also caused great suffering to its eaters

Admission is required 🎟️✅, except for children. Each ticket 🎟️ with a complimentary 🆓 postcard, so visitors can choose postcard designs from its souvenir shop 🛒🛍️💝🎁 You can opt to pay an international stamp fee of THB50 to post the postcard from here

Oppsss…While drafting this blog post, she 👩🏻 just recalled that she still owes her travel mate, Ms Kakak for this stamp fee that she has helped to pay 1️⃣st 😜🤦🏻‍♀️ Ohh ya… there is a stamping station near the museum exit for its visitors to enjoy writing ✍🏻 & stamping their postcard here with date 📆 Then, drop in the written postcard into the postbox 📮 at museum entrance before leaving 😃😁 Hmm…Don’t know when she will receive her postcard 🤔❓⁉️

It’s the Phra Chiang Saen Sii Pandin, a huge Golden Buddha statue seated on a boat-shaped platform being ornately decorated with colourful stained glass & the boat sits right on the very edge of the river nearby the viewpoint of The Golden Triangle 🔺

Choui Fong Tea Plantation 🌱🍃🍵 

It’s located between Chiang Rai & The Golden Triangle 🔺 of Thailand 🇹🇭 It provides good viewpoints to see the tea plantations on the undulating hills ⛰️🌿🍃🌱 & visitors can walk a little into the tea plantations from its cafe/ restaurant to take photos/ videos 📸📹 at its designated OOTD spots with greenery background of its lovely terraces of tea farming 😍🤩

Ohh ya…Its main processing tea factory is not open 🚫 for public visiting. However, you may contact them in advance to book either an on-site guided tour, tea harvesting season, customary tea ceremony or tea brewing workshop etc.

There is an adjoining visitor centre that provides all its visitors with 🆓 hot tea tasting 🫖🍵☕, a cafe/ restaurant with good views & a souvenirs shop with the tea ie. signature Jin Xuan oolong, black tea, green tea etc. Also the tea-infused products ie. Lotion 🧴, hand cream, soap 🧼, shower cream etc.

It’s really a brilliant idea 💡 to incorporate nature into art creation, yes ✅, a nature inspired artwork creation 💚🌱🌿☘️🍃🖼️

She enjoyed the step by step guidance shared by the instructor;

• 1️⃣st, to place a wood board
• Then, a layer of plastic
• Next, a layer a piece of white cloth ⬜️
• Choose a teak leave & put it on top of the white cloth ☘️⬜️
• Then, topped it with another layer of plastic
• Start hammering on the leave in all angles of the whole leave especially the leave vien with a wooden hammer 🔨☘️⬜️
• Repeat the process of choosing teak leave & hammering on the cloth to decorate nature leave stain art design as you wish 

Yes ✅, when hammering the teak leave 🔨🌱🌿☘️🍃, the leave’s liquid from the teak leaves being hammered will stain according to its leave veins & lines aka force stamping from the hammering process on the white cloth ⬜️ to design & create an art piece, yeah‼️

Hmm…From her personal learning experience for the 1️⃣st time, it’s not an easy process because the amount of leave liquid stained on the cloth maybe too much or too little from the strengths of each hammering process 🔨☘️ Then, it may smudge the art design that each wish to create for

A must try when you’re here to taste this local Thai specialty dish named “The 4️⃣ Lands of Lanna”

It served 4️⃣ different dishes created & presented in a bamboo weave tray for a pax portion each

1. 🇲🇲 Chiang Tung yellow sticky rice ie. Local chicken rice of Tai Yai or Burmese people ~ Very yummy delicious 🤤😋 especially love the great spices use in this dish, rich fragrant when enjoy every bites
2. 🇱🇦 Matcha Long Khong, a Lao cuisine which is made from a large fish 🐟 (Belongs to catfish family) that can only be found in the Mekong River ~ SiennyLovesDrawing doesn’t really enjoyed the slightly chewy the fish skin of this dish 
3. 🇨🇳 Fried mushroom 🍄‍🟫 , Prim Mala, as a representative of the spicy 🌶️ Chinese food menu. Because of the hound is a Chinese herb & hence increase the taste with hot spicy 🥵 ~ SiennyLovesDrawing’s favourite among these 4️⃣ dishes, it’s so addictive tasty after her favourite mala dipping 😋🤤💯
4. 🇹🇭 Thai lotus dessert aka rainbow moon, it’s glutinous balls with bean paste inside each ball to enjoy. It completes this special delicious “The 4️⃣ Lands of Lanna” meal by local Chiang Saen community members here 😋👍🏻

Ohh ya…Not forgetting the Lanna salad 😋🤤🥗 It’s a fresh vegetable dish that sprinkled with crispy pork caps ie. Deep fried pig skin & Khao Sui yellow noodles topped with a special sauce for addictive tasty excitement ~ The sauce is so yummy & highlights this whole salad dish

During this recent visit, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt how to making “Sapao” ie. A junk boat 🚤 to deliver prayer items to the deceased souls by floating “Sapao” through the river. It meant to prepare for the next world or as a charity. It’s also considered as a worship & to submit prayer request to the Mekong River

In this workshop, a numbers of cuts banana stems in various sizes with sequencing numbering labelled, so SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 with the help from the staff named Khun Pat 💁🏻‍♂️to arrange & then hammer 🔨 in bamboo sticks to joining the banana stems together to form a junk boat 🚤 

During the last section of this workshop ie. When the instructor requested her & the other participants to write own name, wishes & messages that each wish to send to their respective deceased person on a piece of rectangular banana leaves ✍🏻🍃🚤 It’s a warm touching heart  👩🏻❤️💖 moments for her that were beyond her control from this workshop attended here

SiennyLovesDrawing actually can’t control & teared 👩🏻🥹 It’s because of her heavy heart ❤️ that she missed her late papa 👴🏻 a lot & her Sapao created here meant to deliver how much she misses her papa 👩🏻💖👴🏻

She appreciates & grateful that she gets this chance to create & then floating a Sapao through the Mekong River to deliver how much she misses feeling to her beloved late dad 👩🏻💖💕👴🏻🚤 from Chiang Saen district in Chiang Rai province, Thailand 🇹🇭

She was on a tram 🚃 ride from the workshop centre to the old ancient city, pray the Sapao to Buddha statue & then on a long boat ride to floating her Sapao created for her late papa. It’s a awesome & meaningful way to learn this heritage culture of Chiang Saen local Thai community 💯👍🏻

So, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt that this is an ancient tradition for local Chiang Saen people

It’s very popular especially for the Yi Peng Festival & actually happened earlier than the traditional Loi Krathong celebration in Thailand 🇹🇭 

Generally , the traditional Sapao invention by Lanna people is either using banana stems, papaya stems 🧡 or bamboo 🎍🎋 to create a junk boat 🚤 Then, to decorate this junk boat built with leaves 🌿, flowers 🌼 & coloured papers cut into various patterns. Lastly, to fill in prayer items into it eg. Cooked rice 🍚 , sticky rice, local fruits, bananas 🍌, stranded sugar, various foods, sugar, salt, tobacco, cloves, flowers, incense, candles🕯️etc.

According to ancient beliefs, if a person making a royal  Sapao ie. Sapao Loi Kroh, it will be a boat 🚤 that is used to ask for forgiveness from Mae Phra Kongka. If making a money Sapao boat, it means this floating Sapao will request luck 🍀 for trading & fulfilled duties. In general, a Sapao meant for a prayer request for god blessings, happiness, healthy & wealthy

Tram 🚃 Ride To Explore The Ancient Old City & Floating Sapao 🚤 At Mekong River

When on the way to Mekong river to floating the junk boat, the tram 🚃 passed by & explore a little of the ancient old city of Chiang Saen. Yes ✅, just briefly explored & visited the old city on a tram 🚃 ride

The tram 🚃 stopped at Wat Athi Ton Kaeo (Location📍https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ri1WinDyLLjrsVvG6). It’s a temple constructed in 1515 by Phra zmuang Kaeo, a ruler 👑 of Chiang Mai that time. During his visit to Chiang Saen in order to lessen & reconcile conflicts among the monks from different ethnic groups, so he presided over the ordination of Chiang Saen young men, so that all monks could take part in the same religious ceremonies back then

The tram 🚃 also stopped opposite road of Wat Roi Kho วัดร้อยข้อ (Location 📍https://maps.app.goo.gl/5KMeXgBRXkHTpfJ99). SiennyLovesDrawing has prayed her Sapao made 🚤 to the gigantic Buddha statue in front of this temple before floating it at Mekong River. It’s an ancient temple ruin built in the 16th century

The next visit to this district, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 is planning to stay longer here to spend more time slowly exploring the whole old ancient city to learn more of its history then
