Malaysia Cocoa Industry Status

While Datuk Dr Ramle Kasin 👨🏽‍💼, Director General of MCB also in his speech has expressed his congratulations to the management of Cocoa Straits 1778🤎 for successfully expanding its business & welcome their contribution to the development of Malaysia cocoa & chocolate 🍫 industry

He further shared that MCB has worked together 🤝🏻 with Benns Ethicoa Chocolate Factory Sdn Bhd especially in the production of Malaysia premium chocolate. He has expressed his Thank You appreciation in this collaboration to Mr Wilfred Ng, the founder of Benns Ethicoa Chocolate Factory Sdn Bhd who also attended at this grand opening ceremony

He further shared about the Malaysia cocoa industry status. The cocoa grindings in 2023 shows an increase ⬆️ of 0.73% to 370,207 metric tonnes compare with 367,540 metric tonnes in 2022. With that volume, Malaysia 🇲🇾 is the 5️⃣th largest cocoa grindings country in the world 🌍 Whereas, in Asia 🌏, it’s the 2️⃣nd largest, after Indonesia 🇮🇩, wow 😲

In this connection, the export value of chocolate has continually increasing 📈 since 2010 (13 years) & has increased by more than 500%, bravo 👏🏻💯👍🏻 The cocoa & chocolate’s contribution to Malaysia’s income has increased ⬆️ in 2023. The export earning of cocoa & cocoa products has increased ⬆️ by 5.0% to RM8.21 billion compared with RM7.82 billion in 2022. The main contributor of the export earning is cocoa butter (32%), followed by cocoa powder (24%). Chocolate 🍫 contributes to 20% of the total cocoa export earnings. The export earnings of chocolate has increased ⬆️ to RM1.66 billion in 2023 as compared to RM1.49 billion in 2022

Currently, there are 60 chocolate & cocoa confectionery factories in Malaysia 🇲🇾🍫🏭 & there are 258 Handmade Chocolate Entrepreneurs registered under MCB’s guidance. In 2023, the chocolate entrepreneurs earned RM10.38 million value of chocolate sales, compared with RM6.84 million in 2022. The rise 📈 in sales is due to the economic recovery of post-COVID19 pandemic

In the Malaysia cocoa 🇲🇾🍫 upstream sector, the cocoa beans production is still low ⬇️ & not enough for fulfil the demand by local cocoa grinders & chocolatiers beans-to-bar 🟫 Thus, the importation of more than 90% beans for local use. However, this year, MCB is implementing a program to rehabilitate 2,126 hectares of cocoa planting area 🌱 by small holders throughout Malaysia. Therefore, it is expected that the cocoa beans production this year can reach the target of 500 metric tonnes. Malaysia 🇲🇾 is also recognised as the premium cocoa beans producing country & 30% of the beans produced is traded as cocoa premium
