Malaysian Heritage: Telepuk Textile Art

During a recent visit to Karnival Komuniti Kraf 2025, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt about Telepuk textile art in Selangor for the 1๏ธโƒฃst time

Telepuk is the most glorious Malay textile & is associated with royalty & the nobility. It was especially prominent in states like Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak & Johor. Its historical significance is captured in Malay manuscripts such as Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang Chik, where it’s referred to as “perada”

In the state of Selangor, Telepuk textile is a rich fabric usually worn by the royalty & nobility members since 300 years ago. It’s widely used during the reign of the High Royal Highness Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-haj ๐Ÿ‘‘ (1938-1960) & worn by his consort the Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Jemaah

The tradition of Telepuk art has continued since the beginning of the formation of the Sultanate of Selangor in 1766, based on the discovery of cultural artifacts in the form of Telepuk stamp belonging to Raja Penuh, the son of Raja Lumu, the 1๏ธโƒฃst Sultan of Selangor. The stamp engraved with the name of Raja Penuh is kept on Daik Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

The use of Telepuk art cloth continued until the next reign. From here, the tradition of Telepuk art developed in the Selangor Palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & the use of telepuk cloth continued during the reigns of Sultan Abdul Samad Ibni Raja Abdullah (1857-1898), Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah Ibni Raja Muda Musa (1898-1938), Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1938-1942) & (1945-1960) & Sultan Musa Giatuddin Riayat Shah Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1942-1945)

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt this art technique briefly from the friendly carnival staff on duty at the carnival

This traditional technique involves creating motifs & designs on fabric, especially woven cloth, using a stamping technique with gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, often uses 24K gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf

The process started with stamp Arabic gum onto the forearm, followed by the telepuk stamp carved with motifs. The gum acts as an adhesive for the gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, which is then pressed onto the fabric

Gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf is imported from Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ for its superior quality. It’s produced in Thailand because it’s traditionally used in the royal attire of the King of Thailand ๐Ÿ‘‘

It refers to a traditional textile art that is recognized as a royal heritage & is currently in the process of being gazetted as the Official Textile Art Heritage of the State of Selangor

โ™ฌ Gamelan Symphony – FASSounds

This art produces luxurious decorations using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fabric, which was once styled by the palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & royal families, & is now being worked on to preserve & elevate its dignity through various programs & documentation

However, no water โŒ๐Ÿ’ฆ or hand wash on Telepuk art textiles because it can damage the golden ๐Ÿ’› motifs which adorned the textile’s surface. She has understood briefly about the art of washing Telepuk textile which requires special techniques to preserve the cloth. After each wear, it’s cleaned by smoking aka โ€œBertunuโ€ in Malay language. Bertunu means drying the cloth with fragrant smoke produced from traditional ingredients burned in a steaming container & placed under a rattan trap

Traditional fragrance ingredients for making dry laundry with 7๏ธโƒฃ dried plants are Rose ๐ŸŒน, Jasmine, Kenanga, (Tpaka, Kesidang, Tanjung, Kemunting, some other woods ๐Ÿชต & fragrances eg. Agarwood, iatincana, kasturi wood, hampastebu, frankincense & white granulated sugar are impregnated. These ingredients when mixed will produce a fragrant aroma

The dry laundry process is usually done by burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ the ingredients in a large impregnating container & placed under a rattan trap. The Telepuk clothes will be placed on the rattan trap & turned over several times until all parts receive fragrant smoke & last up to 3๏ธโƒฃ months

Recognition as heritage: The Selangor State Government is actively conducting research & documentation to gazette the Telepuk art as an official state heritage. This effort is expected to be completed & gazetted in near future to ensure that this art is preserved for future generations

History & uses: This heritage art has been in Selangor for a long time & has even been a symbol of pride for the royal ๐Ÿ‘‘ family for the past 300 years. It’s used to decorate ceremonial clothing such as tanjak, samping & selendang worn for official events & weddings. Telepuk art is also used in decorating the wings of the Wau Kapal, the official Selangor kite, using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel or carved colored paper

Production process: The process involves pasting flower motifs with gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fine fabric using the woodblock technique. The attached gold tinsel gives the fabric a unique shine โœจ

Conservation efforts: The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) has launched a special book titled ‘TELEPUK, Bunga-bunga Emas Yang Dilupai’ to promote this art. Demonstrations of this art production are also held at Muzium Selangor ๐Ÿ›๏ธ to expose the public to the subtleties of this heritage traditional art

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt a deeper appreciation ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’– for the artistry, history & ongoing efforts to conserve & preserve this heritage traditions alive ~ Telepuk Textile Art

Though it’s not popular & the choice of ideas to the local fashion designers. Today younger generations, especially Malays are not familiar & unacknowledged about this Telepuk textile art as the great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Malay traditional textile art form. This preservation initiative already identified the floral motif of the Telepuk textile & led to a systematic inquiry in documenting the aesthetic values of the Malay treasure of the Malay Selangor heritage textile. It also documented & compiled the aesthetic & philosophical values of treasure of the Telepuk textile as the Selangor Malay traditional royal court fabric

Memorials Edutourism Destinations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป all, in this blog story, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป would like to highlight some Memorials as must visit edutourism destinations in Kuala Lumpur. All gathered from her recent trip as a local tourist in own city here ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜

So, why pay a visit to memorialsโ“โ‰๏ธ

It aims to pay respects to those who have passed away, to remember their lives & legacies, to grieve & find comfort, to connect with history & to acknowledge significant events & contributions, essentially serving as a tangible place to reflect on the past & honor those who are no longer present

It helps to maintain a shared understanding of history, ensuring its legacy continues. These memorial sites can inspire civic engagement & reflection on social values for a country too

Memorial edutourism aims to educate the younger generation about Malaysiaโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ history & then fostering patriotism. In addition, it allows young generations to know the statesmen & the history of Malaysiaโ€™s civilization as the basis of love โค๏ธ for the country, as well as where the basis of unity ๐Ÿค๐Ÿป lies

This is especially applicable for schools ๐Ÿซ to organise more memorials visiting as part of the school curriculum for the young generations

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป highly recommended this as a must visit to appreciate ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’– the historical contribution & sacrifice of Malaysiaโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Father of Independence ~ late Tunku Abdul Rahman in his struggles to gain independence for the Federation of Malaya or Malaya through cooperation with various political parties and negotiations with the British ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

Itโ€™s an important historical marker commemorating late Tunku Abdul Rahman’s contributions to the formation of Malaysia. With its unique design & strategic location in Kuala Lumpur, the memorial has become an important destination for local & international tourists who want to delve into Malaysia’s history ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

๐Ÿ†“ admission & SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘€ has observed that most exhibits are RFID-tagged ๐Ÿท๏ธโœ… to safe keeping by the National Archives of Malaysia

Guided tours are available โœ… for visitors to gain in-depth information & understanding about late Tunku Abdul Rahman & the history of Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

This original Residency bungalow ๐Ÿ  preserves the Tudor-style, characteristics of the colonial era, still maintains its original shape & internal layout. It was late Tunku Abdul Rahmanโ€™s official home from 1956 to the early 70s. It is flanked by 2๏ธโƒฃ more modern buildings ie. Block A & Block B with displays of exhibits. Yes โœ…, already over ๐Ÿ’ฏ years old to tell various stories of how Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ navigated the waves before achieving independence on 31 Aug 1957. It showcases late Tunku Abdul Rahman’s collection & memorabilia, also contains interesting stories related to him

In 1992, it has since been restored & made several improvements by the National Archives of Malaysia. It was fully completed in 1994 & named as Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial ~ A historical building & museum for public viewing in Kuala Lumpur commemorating the life & achievements of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman who served as 1๏ธโƒฃst Prime Minister of Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ from 1957 to 1970

The Cabinet Meeting table used by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman when chairing the 1๏ธโƒฃst Cabinet Meeting in 1956, which was previously located in the Parliament Building

Not to miss the great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป historical display of the Merdeka Table where late Tunku Abdul Rahman placed the letter โœ‰๏ธ of authority that bore the Federation of Malaya as a sovereign & independent country.
