Local Thai people known it as the royal pagoda or Chedi Yutta Hatthi, this pagoda shares Myanmar’s ๐ฒ๐ฒ famous Chawedagong’s features & houses holy Buddha relics
SiennyLovesDrawing personally got impressed ๐ฉ๐ป๐๐คฉ with its wooden door๐ช panels & roof decorations that are magnificently crafted. Also the story of the Lord Buddha is depicted on the temples wooden window panels ๐ช which are covered in real gold ๐
The chedi is surrounded by 16 smaller pagodas, creating a harmonious & visually captivating sight ๐๐คฉ Within its arch, 16 revered Buddha images are enshrined, further elevating the templeโs spiritual significance
Beyond the Phra Boromma Chedi, it’s also home to Phra Chao Tanjai, a revered Buddha image depicted in the meditation posture, which holds a special place in the hearts ๐of the people of Tak Province ๐น๐ญ
Inside the chapel, a wooden gable adorned with intricate stencils & a window ๐ช carved with exquisitely lacquered & gilded Buddha images narrates the inspiring history of Buddhism. Within the chapel, a stucco-lacquered & gilded Buddha image, symbolizing the subduing of Mara, is enshrined, exemplifying the templeโs remarkable Buddhist artistry โธ๏ธ๐๏ธ
Every year, around the end of May/ June, this temple ๐ hosts a revered ceremony to worship the Phra Borommathat Chedi, a tradition cherished by local Tak people for generations to enduring devotion here. It’s a spiritual sanctuary & a place of cultural preservation for the regionโs heritage & traditions
Wat Phra Phutthabat Doi Lon เธงเธฑเธเธเธฃเธฐเธเธธเธเธเธเธฒเธเธเธญเธขเนเธฅเนเธ ๐ค๐
It’s a Buddhist forest monastery which emphasizes on the meditation ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ practices. This shady & peaceful monastery is tuck in the embrace of mountain โฐ๏ธ ranges. Highlight that attracts local & foreign tourists is a notably majestic Mahasakya Muni Srisanphet aka Phra Maha Sakya Muni So Sanphet, a large white ๐ค sitting Buddha statue characterized by its stunning appearance
It’s a grand & exquisite Buddha image measuring 20m wide across the lap & 38m height. The Buddha image is enshrined on a hill, so it can be seen from afar. Moreover, up on a steep hill stands a mandapa that houses the footprint ๐ฃ of Lord Buddha. The footprint๐ฃ of the Buddha is located on the summit of a high mountainโฐ๏ธ & being protected by a beautifully constructed chedi๐
In the same area, there is also a natural spring ๐๏ธ that locals believe to possess healing properties, referred to as a divine water source. The local villagers believe that if a woman ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ goes to fetch water in this well, the water will dry up. But no matter how much a man ๐๐ปโโ๏ธscoops, the water will never run out. Therefore, when it comes to Apr month every year, particularly after Songkran ๐ฆ Festival, the local villagers in the Thong Fah subdistrict & the local Thai people of Ban Tak District will join hands ๐ค๐ป to carry on the tradition of ascending the mountain to pay homage & respect ๐๐ป๐คฒ๐ป to the Buddha’s footprint ๐ฃ
Therefore, this monastery is suitable for tourists seeking for tranquility or nature ๐ณ๐ณ enthusiasts. They are also welcome visitors to participate in the meditation ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ง๐ป practices

The Hmong aka โMeoโ are the 2๏ธโฃnd largest hill tribe group in Thailand ๐น๐ญ are a prominent hill tribe in northern Thailand. They are originally from China ๐จ๐ณ & began migrating to Southeast Asia ๐ in the early 1800s, eventually establishing communities in Thailand due to past conflicts & now live in mountain โฐ๏ธ villages, primarily in mountainous provinces like Ban Tak, Chiang Mai & Mae Hong Son
There are Hmong green ๐ tribe (Based Ban Tak) & Hmong white ๐ค tribe (Based Chiang Mai) by differentiating with the back design of the clothingโs collar. Ohh ya…Do check out her earlier blog stories about things to do, where to eat & where to stay at Tak province of Northern Thailand for your itinerary planning ya๐๐
Hey ๐๐ป all, it’s the 1๏ธโฃst time SiennyLovesDrawing travelled to this Tak province, Thailand ๐น๐ญ Tak has Thailand’s largest dam & reservoir
Her travel mates & herself took a flight with AirAsia from KLIA2 to Bangkok city, then a smooth comfy van ๐ ride of approximately 5 to 6 hours through the highway ๐ฃ๏ธ to reach Tak province. HmmโฆIt’s not a straight long hours ride, instead with stops in between for lunch ๐ฝ๏ธ, toilet ๐ฝ break, 7-11 etc. She personally doesnโt really feel the long ride, moreover with very good ๐๐ป road ๐ฃ๏ธ condition, a plus point indeed ๐ฏ๐๐ป
Alternatively, tourists can consider for a domestic flight โ๏ธ ๐ซ journey of approximately 1.5 hours from Bangkok city to Sukhothai
Tips ๐: Just that not many flights, so waiting time for the connecting flight may need to be in your itinerary planning consideration OR in fact, it’s absolutely wise to combine travel to cover both Sukhothai & Tak in a trip ya ๐
This time she is gonna sharing more about things to do when in Tak, other than this annual festival celebration ๐๐
Things To Do / Places To Visit
200th Anniversary Rattanakosin Memorial Bridge ๐ & Annual Loy Krathong Sai Festival
So, why to travel & visit to Tak provinceโโ๏ธ
This traditional cultural event celebration is happening at the 200th Anniversary Rattanakosin Memorial Bridge ๐ that constructed in 1982
It’s a captivating suspension bridge spanning the picturesque Ping River. It was dedicated to celebrating ๐๐ the 200th anniversary of Rattanakosin, the founding of Bangkok as the capital of Thailand ๐น๐ญ The bridge stretches approximately 700m in length & boasts a width of 2.5m
Local Tak residents often frequent this park ๐๏ธ to enjoy leisure time amidst the tranquil ambiance of the riverfront. In the evening, this bridge ๐ transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle. The entire length of the bridge is adorned with beautiful lights ๐ก

It’s a place of reverence & national pride as it was the 1๏ธโฃst shrine built in Thailand ๐น๐ญ since 1971 that has a a life size statue of King Taksin ๐ in a most peaceful position on his throne
King Taksin ๐ was born in 1733, the only king of the Thonburi period,a great Thai king who liberated Thailand from the Burmese & unified it. Visited this shrine to pay homage & respects to an over life-size statue of King Taksin ๐ in a sitting position with a sword ๐ก๏ธacross his lap
Originally, a shrine to King Taksin the Great was built at Wat Hoi Khoi Khao Kaeo, Mae Tho Subdistrict, Tak Province. Overtime, the shrine deteriorated & fell to disrepair, failing to honor the King. Mr. Chamrat Suebsir, the then-chief engineer of the Tak Highway Department (1947), initiated the fundraising ๐ฐ drive for the shrine construction. He also proposed to the Fine Arts Department that the current statue be cast. However, before it was completed, Mr Chamrent Naisi was transferred to another province. Mr Chaliew Watcharaphuk took over, construction continued, completing the shrine & handing it over to the province in 1949
on 28 Dec 1950, commemorating the day King Taksin the Great ascended to the throne on 28 Dec 1767, to express his loyalty & reverence
Mr. Suwan Chinyot, the then governor of Tak Province, organized the 1๏ธโฃst “Taksin Maharaja Anusorn” event for the Thai people’s continued independence. Every year on this day, the government & Tak residents hold a “Salim Klaeng” event, a tradition that continues till today.
In year 1971, a ๐ shrine (ie. This current shrine) to house the royal monument was built & money ๐ฐ was used to build the shrine of King Taksin the Great, from the construction of the royal replica & from donors totaling to THB275,955.34. This money was then used to establish a foundation named as “King Taksin the Great, Lak Song Province”
In 2005, then the King Taksin The Great Foundation in Tak Province collaborated Matichon Co, Ltd, renovated & restored this shrine

Also part of this park’s lower-elevation dipterocarp forest. This tree is believed to be the largest in Thailand ๐น๐ญ, wow ๐ฏ๐คฉ It’s a dipterocarp of the Anisoptera Costata species & now endangered due to illegal logging ๐ช๐ชต It’s located approximately 2.5km from the national park office
It’s believed that the Burmese King Alaungpaya ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ used to march his army through this national park
It was designated as Thailand’s 38th national park ๐น๐ญ๐๏ธ๐ณ๐ณ on 23 Dec 1981. This government-managed conservation boasts 150sqm of land teeming with flora & fauna, also the jaw-dropping waterfalls & thriller caves within it
Due to raining ๐ง๏ธโ the earlier day, for safety reason, our tour guide Ms Pinky ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฆฑ not recommend all of us to hike 400m (About an hour steep hiking ๐ฅพ journey to reach the big tree ๐ณ). Instead, SiennyLovesDrawing hugged the replica in the visitor center โบ๏ธ

Doi Muser Market (๐) เธเธฅเธฒเธเธเธญเธขเธกเธนเนเธเธญ
Itโs a local market situated on the Tak-Mae Sot Road ๐ฃ๏ธ , approximately 30 km from Tak province, at the top of a mountain โฐ๏ธ in Thailand’s ๐น๐ญ Mae Sot District. Itโs in the responsibility of the Thai Development Center on the Highlands of Tak Province, Thailand ๐น๐ญ
This busy local market is a clean & well-organized roadside market with a vibrant local atmosphere
It’s known for its fresh fruits, vegetables & other local goods that are often run by the local Muser (or Meo) people. SiennyLovesDrawing was told that some of the fruits & vegetables are sourced from China ๐จ๐ณ since it’s so near to the border
While it’s a market for locals, definitely a popular & worthwhile stop by for tourists on this route as it offers a glimpse into local life
Tourists can observe the way of life of the Thai hill tribe ie. Muser tribes bring their products from the garden to sell here. Itโs especially known for its high-quality fruits ๐ ๐, vegetables ๐ฝ๐ & plants ๐ฟ๐ฑ, though can also find other goods like clothing ๐๐(Limited as observed) & local Thai snacks ๐
Guess whatโโ๏ธ
The pricing is really reasonable as her travel mate, Ms Rose mentioned, the snow lotus fruit usually at price RM8 to RM12 per kg, however it’s only THB25 ie. Approximately RM6, yes โ , almost 50% cheaper, wow ๐ฒ๐
A special thank you ๐๐ป๐ to all her travel mates ๐ซ๐ป๐ฌ๐ป๐ญ๐ป๐ง๐ปโ๐คโ๐ง๐ป & tour guide, Ms Pinky ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฆฑ that she got to try for the 1๏ธโฃst time some of the local specialities from this local market during van ๐ journey to reach the next destination (Yes โ , a happy potluck snacks party in the van, lol ๐ ) ie. Ohh yaโฆFrom SiennyLovesDrawingโs reading & research ๐ฉ๐ป๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ป๐ before the trip, she understands that within this market area is also the location ๐of the Hilltribe Museum ๐๏ธ which has gathered everyday items of the Muser tribe & hill tribes all from the past to the present. It’s the largest arch-shaped concrete dam in Thailand ๐น๐ญ with area of 300 sqkm, 486m in length, rising 154m in height, the damโs crest stretches 6m wide & 260m depth & with high water ๐ฆ level to generate & supply electricity โกto the northeast, north west & north regions, wow ๐ฒ
It’s definitely a testament to Thailandโs ๐น๐ญ๐ commitment to sustainable development & environmental conservation
It boasts a maximum water capacity of 13,462 million cubic meters, making it a vital water resource for the region & contributing to Thailandโs ๐น๐ญ development & well-being
1๏ธโฃ of its primary functions is electricity generation, harnessing the force of the river to produce hydroelectric power. This capability significantly contributes to Thailandโs energy needs, powering industries & homes across the nation
The controlled release of water ๐ฆ from the reservoir ensures a steady water supply for farmers in the region, hence enhancing agricultural productivity & food security. Furthermore, this dam acts as a shield during heavy rainfalls ๐ง๏ธโ, effectively managing flood relief by retaining excess water during the rainy season & releasing it strategically to mitigate downstream flooding
It also serves as a haven for freshwater fish ๐ breeding, supporting the conservation & sustainable management of aquatic resources
At the same time, it offers breathtaking ๐๐คฉ views from its ridge, making it a popular viewpoint for tourists visiting Tak, Thailand ๐น๐ญ Its panoramic vistas of the lush green forests ๐๐ณ๐ณ & intricate mountains โฐ๏ธ create a mesmerizing sight that leaves a lasting impression on visitors
There is a big Buddha to pray ๐๐ป for safe protection that located at this dam by the local Thai people here. Also some small Buddhas at the hill wall towards the dam dock area ๐คโ too
SiennyLovesDrawing & travel mates enjoyed wooden boat ๐ญ๐ป๐ซ๐ป๐ซ๐ป๐ญ๐ป๐ค ride to tour around this dam that cost just THB70 per pax. Yeahโผ๏ธ As a self taught artist, art enthusiast & art lover, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป๐๐จ๐ฏ is gonna sharing here her recent amazing hands-on experience of creating very own piece of natural cotton fabric art with leaves โฌ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐
Yes โ , unique & only 1๏ธโฃ, truly โ NO 2๏ธโฃ natural plant prints are created ever the same ๐ฏ% in the world ๐๐๐ป๐
When arrived ๐๐ก, she ๐ฉ๐ป๐๐ got impressed personally with the workshop space in a calm greenery herb farm surroundings. Then, a happy meet up & learning time from the love nature couples ~ Dr. Tipaporn Phimphisut & her husband , Mr Borvorn ๐น๐ญ๐ซ๐ป with 22 years of herb farming ๐ฟ๐ฑ
Sela Eco Leaf Printing is a handmade & heart-made ๐ environmentally friendly products founded & created by Dr. Tipaporn Phimphisut ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ฆณ
She has generously shared lots of her knowledge & research findings as a continuing education on how to use natural resources wisely & sustainably ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฑ through her YouTube channel
The hands-on process begins by selecting leaves & flowers ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ since each will provide a colourful natural print. She was told by Mrs Tipaporn ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ฆณ, itโs essential to choose cotton fabric โฌ for it. Silk or wool also is a great ๐๐ป option for beginners as they absorb the natural plant dye easily & can be printed without using any mordants
The natural leaf materials ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐ used for eco leaf printing can vary depending on the location ๐& the seasonal time ๐ฐ๏ธ of year
Examples of plant materials suitable for eco-printing that are found globally include:
Leaves ๐: Maple, eucalyptus, oak, willow, sumac etc.
Flowers ๐ท: Many flowers including red roses ๐น, marigolds, geraniums, coreopsis & cosmos (Cosmos bipinnata & Cosmos sulphureus)
Bark ๐ชต: The bark of certain trees, such as birch, cherry, willow etc. can be used to create unique patterns on fabric
Berries ๐ซ: Berries such as elderberries, sumac, currants, blackberries etc.
Other materials:Other materials, including kitchen waste eg. Onion ๐ง skins, avocado ๐ฅ pits, herbs ๐ฟ such as sage, mint etc.
A list of basic supplies that she recalled she has used them during her eco leaf printing workshop & all were prepared by Sela Eco Leaf Printing team
Basket ๐งบ: To keep natural leaf materials selected for the eco leaf printing
Scissors โ๏ธ: To cut the natural leaf materials into the desired shape
Fabric โฌ: The fabric to be printed on, either silk, cotton (SiennyLovesDrawingโs workshop opted this โ ) or wool. Certain paper also can for its texture & paper art creation
Natural leaf materials ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐: The natural plant materials to be used for eco leaf printing eg. Leaves ๐ , flowers ๐ท , berries ๐ซ, bark ๐ชต etc.
Mordant ๐งชโ๏ธ: A substance used to fix the dye to the fabric, eg. vinegar, alum, iron or tannin. The cotton fabric โฌ provided already being soaked with it prior to the workshop
Rolling bamboo stick ๐: To press the natural leaf materials onto the fabric & plastic sheets
String & rubber bands: To bundle the cotton fabric & natural leaf materials together with the bamboo stick before steam โจ๏ธ/ dyeing process
Protective gear like gloves ๐งค , mask ๐ท & apron: To protect own skin & clothes from the mordant & dye ~ To prevent skin allergenic & sensitivity
Dye pot ๐ซ: A large pot or container for heating the wrapped bundles for the steam โจ๏ธ process
A heat source: To heat โจ๏ธ๐ซ the dye pot, usually a stove or a hot plate
The step-by-step of eco leaf printing that she has learnt from this workshop;
โ Mrs Tipaporn ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ฆณ๐ passionately explained nature love & the arts of leaves ~ Colours & how to design / DIY briefly
โ Choose leaves ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐
โ Arrange leaves on cotton fabric โฌ (Already prior soaked with homemade chemical/ solution mixed ๐ฆ๐งชโ๏ธ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฌ) with a variety of techniques to create different designs, such as layering or bundling the leaves. Tips ๐: Use as many leaves as possible
โ Topped with 2๏ธโฃ plastic sheets, rolled ๐๏ธ with bamboo stick ๐ & wrapped ๐ซ it. After arranging the leaf materials, tightly press the fabric layers between 2๏ธโฃ plastic sheets & then roll them with a bamboo stick to provide stronger support. Lastly, tie with rubber bands & a string around it firmly to keep the leaf materials & cotton fabric in place
โ Sela Eco Printing staff handles steam โจ๏ธ process, ie. Traditional boiling methods to transfer the natural leaf prints onto fabric
โ Unwrapping: After boiling / steaming โจ๏ธ, unwrapped the bundle to remove the layers of leaves ๐ , flowers ๐ท & other leaf materials to reveal the eco leaf print on the cotton fabric. Reveal 1๏ธโฃ-of-a-kind print ~ Uniquely beautiful & ๐ฏ% organic art piece created
โ Lastly, the cotton fabric is hand washed โ๐ป๐ฆ to remove any remaining mordant & then hang it up to dry
Eco leaf printing ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐ is a natural colour dyeing technique by using leaves๐, flowers ๐ท& other plant parts eg. Fruits to create patterns & colours on a fabric โฌ๏ธ or paper ๐
This nature DIY craft making process involves wrapping & bundling the leaves & cotton fabric together with a bamboo stick, then steaming or boiling โจ๏ธ the wrapped bundle to transfer the nature colours & leaves patterns from the selected plants to the fabric, wow ๐ฒ๐คฉ
Itโs 1๏ธโฃ-of-a-kind print that captures the beauty of nature ๐ฑ It also allows everyone to enjoy work in harmony with the plants blooming seasons by using all natural ingredients that are grown, found, shared or responsibly foraged ๐๐ฏ๐๐ป
Itโs a relatively ๐ technique that has been developed in recent years, yet itโs based on traditional methods of natural dyeing that have been used for centuries. In fact, this specific term eco printing was 1๏ธโฃst coined by an Australia ๐ฆ๐บ based artist ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐จ, India Flint in early 2000s & being credited as the pioneer of this technique & her book โEco Colour: Botanical Dyes for Beautiful Textilesโ continues popularised this art method
SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป๐ enjoyed the most exciting aspects of eco leaf printing ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐ ie. The inherent unpredictability because of the plantโs colour (Whether green ๐, yellow ๐, purple ๐, orange ๐งก etc.) in nature may not always match the hue it imparts on the cotton fabric โฌ
This element of surprise ๐ฎ or shocking ๐ณ when this DIY outcome revealed actually ๐ฏ% driven by the natureโs quirks, hence why eco leaf printing is uniquely enjoyable fun ๐คฉ๐ฏ๐๐ป Hmm…Of course it can be disappointing too
Guess what โโผ๏ธ
The most distinguishing feature of eco leaf printing is the use of renewable & sustainable natural plants ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐๐๐ as main materials. Each print hence is absolutely unique & irreproducible. The plant type, leaf ๐ฟ age, steam โจ๏ธ & mordanting procedures used determine the patterns & hues obtained. Itโs truly a rewarding creative process that allows each to connect ๐๐ with own natural surroundings, environment & then learn more about this art skill of appreciating the natural flora beauty ๐๐คฉ
Remember that this whole hands-on process is all about experimenting & understanding how different leaves react to various surfaces ie. Fabric/ paper, so the outcome may differ from what one had in mind ๐ญ๐คWith perseverance & patience, one will be astounded by the unique & stunning results that eco leaf printing can be produced
Personally to SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป, itโs a meditative practice that fosters a deeper connection โ๏ธ with nature ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐
From foraging leaves ๐ , flowers ๐ท& other botanicals to prepare & print them on fabric / paper, to enjoy & appreciate the whole crafting process is slow, mindful & deeply relaxing ๐
Itโs a very beginner-friendly & meditative relaxing creative activity, the best ๐๐ป is NO โ any prior experience required. Anyone at any age can enjoy this opportunity to slow down, breathe ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ in the scent of fresh leaves ๐ & reconnect with nature ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ท๐น
Truly relaxing ๐ to enjoy the slow process with all materials & tools provided to unleash own creativity with nature, as well as full instruction & guidance provided throughout the workshop
Absolutely perfect ๐๐ฏ๐๐ป for nature lovers, art crafters, eco friendly travellers, families, friends to try something meaningful & a little bit magical by supporting local artists & then keeping ancient & earth-friendly traditions alive ๐๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ณ
Ohh yaโฆWhile waiting for the steam process โจ๏ธ, SiennyLovesDrawing & her travel mates ๐ง๐ปโ๐คโ๐ง๐ป๐ญ๐ป๐ฌ๐ป๐ซ๐ป went to visit the herb farm & gallery/ showroom/ boutique to check out & shopping ๐ ๐๏ธ for some of the printed fabrics & craft items with natural colours from leaves that Dr.Tipaporn Phimphisut ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ฆณ slowly produces handcrafted 1๏ธโฃ by 1๏ธโฃ & sent to the neighbourhood local community to make tailoring into clothes, scarves ๐งฃ, bags ๐๐๏ธ, adding value & distributing income to the local community, bravo ๐๐ป ๐

โ Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo เธงเธฑเธเนเธเธเธตเธขเนเนเธเนเธเนเธเธง
Its name meant the temple of the 7๏ธโฃ rows of chedi
With prominent ancient structure of this large temple ๐ of having 32 stupas of different sizes in different styles. Its other buildings arranged in an orderly fashion to demonstrate the cosmological principle
The beauty & the variety of forms of the stupas led Prince Damrong Rajanubhab ๐ to presume that this temple was the royal cemetery ๐๐ชฆ or the place for keeping the relics of the royal families of the Sukhothai dynasty
The stupa forms at this wat are categorized into 3๏ธโฃ groups;ย
1๏ธโฃst group ~ The budding-lotus ๐ชท shaped stupa that represents the uniqueness of Sukhothai art. It has a slim & tall form. The square-shaped lowest base is made into a stepped footing. Above the stepped lowest base are multi-tiered square โป๏ธ & octagonal bases decorated with pointed torus moldings to support the budding-lotus-design finial decorated with a conical-shaped spire
2๏ธโฃnd group~ The prasat-style square-shaped stupa with a multi-tier roof & are presumably influenced by the arts of external communities, such as Lanna & ancient Khmer ๐ฐ๐ญ
3๏ธโฃrd group ~ The bell-shaped ๐ stupa decorated with torus moldings under the bell-shaped part. The top part assumes a conical shape. Presumably, this type of stupa originated from the ancient Indian ๐ฎ๐ณ burial ceremony where the hemispherical burial mound is created & decorated on top with the Chatra
โ Wat Chang Lom ๐ เธงเธฑเธเธเนเธฒเธเธฅเนเธญเธก
This wat is located right opposite of the Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo. Its name meant temple surrounded by elephants ๐๐ It was built in the Sukhothai period, or around the mid-13th century to the late 14th century. Its large sized & located in the center of Si Satchanalai town
It was presumed to be built by King Ramlamhaeng ๐ in 1285 following the excavation of the relics of the Lord Buddha & a period of public worshipping & celebration ๐ ๐ of the relics for 1๏ธโฃmonth & 6๏ธโฃ days. The relics then were buried underground at the center of the town, the stupa was built over the buried site & the wall was erected to surround the site. The construction took a total of 9๏ธโฃ years to complete
It was built between 1340 & 1350 by Sukhothai King Lithai ๐, surrounded by a boundary wall with 4๏ธโฃ gates. There are numerous monuments in various styles, a vihara, a principal chedi & 32 small ones
The bell-shaped ๐ principal stupa is placed on the 2๏ธโฃ-story Pradakshina base that is designed for Budhist devotees to walk ๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธin a clockwise ๐ ๐ direction. The lower story is surrounded with 39 standing elephant ๐ sculptures & has a stairway connected to the upper story. Around the upper story, there are 20 niches filled with 1.4 m high enshrining Buddha images in the attitude of subduing Mara. Above the pradakshina base is the bell-shaped ๐ body of the stupa constructed on the circular โญ bases decorated with torus moldings
Above the bell-shaped ๐ body, there are the square โฌ throne & the Kan Chat (The round-pillar-shaped structure) decorated with the low relief of the Buddha images in the walking ๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธposture
The tradition of building a stupa with the surrounding elephant ๐ sculptures originated in Sri Lanka ๐ฑ๐ฐ in the 3๏ธโฃrd century & the Sukhothai kingdom probably adopted this tradition around the 14th century in the reign of King Maha Thammaracha Lithai ๐
The concept of the elephant ๐ sculptures surrounding the stupa base is presumably derived from the Buddhist โธ๏ธ concept that the elephant is an auspicious animal that takes the role of supporting Buddhism & is deemed 1๏ธโฃ of the 108 auspicious items
Tips ๐ from SiennyLovesDrawingโs ๐ฉ๐ป personal experience;
โ Wear comfy clothing & shoes ๐
โ Bring along water ๐ฆ bottle to stay hydrated
โ Apply sunblock ๐งด& insect repellent spray
โ Grab a disposable rain coat ๐งฅ from 7-11 stores if expected cloudy/ raining ๐ง๏ธโ from weather forecast
