Malaysian Heritage: Telepuk Textile Art

During a recent visit to Karnival Komuniti Kraf 2025, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt about Telepuk textile art in Selangor for the 1๏ธโƒฃst time

Telepuk is the most glorious Malay textile & is associated with royalty & the nobility. It was especially prominent in states like Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak & Johor. Its historical significance is captured in Malay manuscripts such as Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang Chik, where it’s referred to as “perada”

In the state of Selangor, Telepuk textile is a rich fabric usually worn by the royalty & nobility members since 300 years ago. It’s widely used during the reign of the High Royal Highness Sultan Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-haj ๐Ÿ‘‘ (1938-1960) & worn by his consort the Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Jemaah

The tradition of Telepuk art has continued since the beginning of the formation of the Sultanate of Selangor in 1766, based on the discovery of cultural artifacts in the form of Telepuk stamp belonging to Raja Penuh, the son of Raja Lumu, the 1๏ธโƒฃst Sultan of Selangor. The stamp engraved with the name of Raja Penuh is kept on Daik Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ

The use of Telepuk art cloth continued until the next reign. From here, the tradition of Telepuk art developed in the Selangor Palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & the use of telepuk cloth continued during the reigns of Sultan Abdul Samad Ibni Raja Abdullah (1857-1898), Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah Ibni Raja Muda Musa (1898-1938), Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1938-1942) & (1945-1960) & Sultan Musa Giatuddin Riayat Shah Ibni Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah (1942-1945)

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt this art technique briefly from the friendly carnival staff on duty at the carnival

This traditional technique involves creating motifs & designs on fabric, especially woven cloth, using a stamping technique with gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, often uses 24K gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf

The process started with stamp Arabic gum onto the forearm, followed by the telepuk stamp carved with motifs. The gum acts as an adhesive for the gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf, which is then pressed onto the fabric

Gold ๐Ÿ’› leaf is imported from Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ for its superior quality. It’s produced in Thailand because it’s traditionally used in the royal attire of the King of Thailand ๐Ÿ‘‘

It refers to a traditional textile art that is recognized as a royal heritage & is currently in the process of being gazetted as the Official Textile Art Heritage of the State of Selangor

โ™ฌ Gamelan Symphony – FASSounds

This art produces luxurious decorations using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fabric, which was once styled by the palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ & royal families, & is now being worked on to preserve & elevate its dignity through various programs & documentation

However, no water โŒ๐Ÿ’ฆ or hand wash on Telepuk art textiles because it can damage the golden ๐Ÿ’› motifs which adorned the textile’s surface. She has understood briefly about the art of washing Telepuk textile which requires special techniques to preserve the cloth. After each wear, it’s cleaned by smoking aka โ€œBertunuโ€ in Malay language. Bertunu means drying the cloth with fragrant smoke produced from traditional ingredients burned in a steaming container & placed under a rattan trap

Traditional fragrance ingredients for making dry laundry with 7๏ธโƒฃ dried plants are Rose ๐ŸŒน, Jasmine, Kenanga, (Tpaka, Kesidang, Tanjung, Kemunting, some other woods ๐Ÿชต & fragrances eg. Agarwood, iatincana, kasturi wood, hampastebu, frankincense & white granulated sugar are impregnated. These ingredients when mixed will produce a fragrant aroma

The dry laundry process is usually done by burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ the ingredients in a large impregnating container & placed under a rattan trap. The Telepuk clothes will be placed on the rattan trap & turned over several times until all parts receive fragrant smoke & last up to 3๏ธโƒฃ months

Recognition as heritage: The Selangor State Government is actively conducting research & documentation to gazette the Telepuk art as an official state heritage. This effort is expected to be completed & gazetted in near future to ensure that this art is preserved for future generations

History & uses: This heritage art has been in Selangor for a long time & has even been a symbol of pride for the royal ๐Ÿ‘‘ family for the past 300 years. It’s used to decorate ceremonial clothing such as tanjak, samping & selendang worn for official events & weddings. Telepuk art is also used in decorating the wings of the Wau Kapal, the official Selangor kite, using gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel or carved colored paper

Production process: The process involves pasting flower motifs with gold ๐Ÿ’› tinsel on fine fabric using the woodblock technique. The attached gold tinsel gives the fabric a unique shine โœจ

Conservation efforts: The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) has launched a special book titled ‘TELEPUK, Bunga-bunga Emas Yang Dilupai’ to promote this art. Demonstrations of this art production are also held at Muzium Selangor ๐Ÿ›๏ธ to expose the public to the subtleties of this heritage traditional art

SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has learnt a deeper appreciation ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’– for the artistry, history & ongoing efforts to conserve & preserve this heritage traditions alive ~ Telepuk Textile Art

Though it’s not popular & the choice of ideas to the local fashion designers. Today younger generations, especially Malays are not familiar & unacknowledged about this Telepuk textile art as the great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Malay traditional textile art form. This preservation initiative already identified the floral motif of the Telepuk textile & led to a systematic inquiry in documenting the aesthetic values of the Malay treasure of the Malay Selangor heritage textile. It also documented & compiled the aesthetic & philosophical values of treasure of the Telepuk textile as the Selangor Malay traditional royal court fabric

Professor Lin Xiang Xiong Hosts Landmark Art Exhibition & Peace Prize Ceremony in Paris

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป all, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ as an art lover is gonna sharing that the renowned humanitarian-artist Professor Lin Xiang Xiong ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ (โ€œProfessor Linโ€) & founder of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Penang, presented his latest exhibition, โ€œThe Vicissitudes of Lifeโ€, at the historic Hรดtel de lโ€™Industrie in Paris ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท from 10 to 13 Sept 2025

Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผis a renowned artist, entrepreneur & advocate for global security through art

As President of the Global Chinese Arts & Culture Association, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Art & a visiting Professor at Peking University, Professor Lin’s work crosses disciplines & borders, connecting ๐Ÿ”„ Eastern & Western cultures

After leaving China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ for Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ in 1956, Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ pursued art studies at the Academy of Arts (1965โ€“1968). Success in business, particularly in the mining industry in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ, funded his travels, art remained his personal refuge & lifelong passion

His painting ๐ŸŽจ ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ style is a dynamic combination of abstraction, traditional techniques & contemporary social commentary, touching on themes such as climate change, war, forced migration & the human condition. Despite being involved in the commercial field, Lin has never neglected his commitment to art as a force for good ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ is an outspoken advocate of the power of the arts in promoting peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ & unity ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป In 2016, he curated a UNESCO exhibition titled “Art for Peace โ€“ Cultural Dialogue between East &/ West”, which calls on artists to rise โฌ†๏ธ up as peacemakers, reduce โฌ‡๏ธ inequality & protect the planet ๐ŸŒ These events resulted in important cultural dialogues that have been documented & archived by UNESCO

Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ has published numerous works, including 8๏ธโƒฃ collections of paintings & 27 volumes of essay & art criticism

This recent exhibition received strong support ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ฏ from key French institutions, with former French President Franรงois Hollande ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ’ผ serving as Honorary Patron & former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin personally attending the opening

Featuring 25 original works by Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ, the exhibition explored 3๏ธโƒฃ themes ~ Anti-war, anti-poverty & anti-pollution & vividly embodied Professor Linโ€™s vision of โ€œArt for Peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธโ€ , a concept that transcends aesthetics & seeks to inspire moral reflection & intercultural understanding

During the exhibition, a high-level academic symposium was held, bringing together leading international scholars, philosophers & cultural leaders to reflect on โ€œIntercultural Dialogue at the Crossroadsโ€ & โ€œRebuilding the Concept of Peace through Artโ€. Distinguished speakers included French writer & human rights activist Marek Halter, eminent philosopher & sinologist Franรงois Jullien, intellectual publisher Franรงois Lโ€™Yvonnet, Swiss curator & sociologist Barbara Polla, special adviser to the President of the Arab World Institute Claude Mollard, cultural diplomacy advisor Yves Marek & retired French Air Force General ร‰tienne Copel. Throughout the discussions, Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ shared his unique insights on the times, on art & on the essence of peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ, sparking strong resonance & deep dialogue ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

On 12 Sept 2025, the inaugural โ€œLin Xiang Xiong Art for Peace Prizeโ€ ceremony was held with great success ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป The competition drew 1,883 entries from ๐Ÿ’ฏ countries around the world ๐ŸŒŽ, far exceeding expectations. This overwhelming response underscored the wide recognition of Professor Linโ€™s ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ โ€œArt for Peaceโ€ advocacy, echoing the common aspirations of todayโ€™s world. Professor Lin announced that the award ๐Ÿ† will be established as a biennial event, continuing as a major artistic initiative dedicated to peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

โ€œThe Vicissitudes of Lifeโ€ Celebrates ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ the Transformative Power of Art in Dialogue, Reflection & Peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ building

โ€œThis exhibition is more of an awakening of thought than a presentation of art,โ€ said Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

โ€œEvery brush ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ stroke is a testimony of time, a silent dialogue between past & present, pain & healing. Whether through the exhibition or the establishment of the Peace Prize ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ†, I hope art is not merely for admiration but can truly touch hearts ๐Ÿ’•, serve as a bridge between cultures & awaken the soft conscience deep within humanity.โ€

The exhibition also marks a milestone in Professor Linโ€™s artistic journey & heralds the opening of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Penang, scheduled for mid-Dec 2025. Covering 8๏ธโƒฃK square meters, the gallery will house Professor Linโ€™s ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ major works & also providing a platform for emerging artists to pursue their dreams. It will stand as 1๏ธโƒฃ of the largest private art galleries in the region, strengthening Malaysiaโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ role as a hub of cultural diplomacy & intercultural understanding in Southeast Asia ๐ŸŒ

Through โ€œThe Vicissitudes of Lifeโ€ , Professor Lin ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ once again demonstrates that art is a messenger of thought & conscience

With clarity, he advocates peace ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ & as an artist, he chooses his own path through the soft power of culture, through words & through his brush ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ to voice his deep concern for war, pollution & poverty

With art as his language, he calls upon fellow artists to join his cause, uniting their strength to speak out for peace & the future of humanity

Amazing Art Installation ~ My Alleyway Memories: Once Upon A Longtang by Red Hong Yi

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป all, SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป would like to urge you all to visit this not to miss quaint alleyway-inspired art installation at the National Art Gallery (NAG) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ from now till 22 March 2023, 9๏ธโƒฃam to 5๏ธโƒฃpm daily

Itโ€™s ๐Ÿ†“ admission, letโ€™s go ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Actually SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป got to know about this amazing art event earlier, however due to year end & CNY festive travelling, so she delayed her visit to it until very recently ๐Ÿ˜

Personally, when she 1๏ธโƒฃst stepped into the art space, she got amazed with the scene with freshly-washed laundry (Actually old used clothes, check out more via ๐ŸŒ https://www.instagram.com/p/CjkA8f1ANwz/ ) fluttering in the breeze on bamboo structures & just like she was back to the once upon a time ๐Ÿ˜Š Yes โœ…, itโ€™s all done up by the famous local Malaysian contemporary artist, Ms Red Hong Yi ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ & her amazing team ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

~ My Alleyway Memories: Once Upon A Longtang ~ Itโ€™s an art installation with a 6๏ธโƒฃm tall bamboo structure & 8๏ธโƒฃ hanging canvas artworks each painted with burnt red calligraphy paper โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

SiennyLovesDrawing got impressed how the brown burning effect created the unique art feels ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ, it requires patience & dedication details effortlessly in this creation of art senses, bravo ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Do check the artworks up close to notice some cured ducks, sausages & even fish being hung with the laundry, that’s the exact scene that Ms Red Hong Yi remembered from her stay at Shanghai then

Itโ€™s Ms Red Hong Yiโ€™s ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ 1๏ธโƒฃst artwork that being given such a prominent platform at a major Malaysian art institution ~ NAG Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ She is an internationally acclaimed artist with a visually captivating showcase of art made from everyday objects including tea bags, flower petals & eggshells etc. with several impressive do-it-yourself projects created

This is now formed part of the NAGโ€™s โ€œSingleโ€ series of exhibitions & it features scenes from old alleyway houses or longtang residences which were built in Shanghai, China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ from the 1840s to 1940s

Ms Red actually lived for 2๏ธโƒฃ years from 2011 to 2013 with her granduncle & grandaunts

This offers the art gallery visitors a glimpse into the relationships that are important to Ms Red Hong Yi ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ

Also an invitation to revisit the fast-disappearing tradition of longtang houses as the old makes way for the ๐Ÿ†• in Shanghai, China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ

Alleyway houses combine both Chinese & Western architectural styles & are built side-by-side along narrow interconnected passageways. Ms Red ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ looks back fondly on her time living there, describing life in a longtang compound as noisy, messy & intimate. She further explained that you would see locals gathered in these cramped alleys, chattering & gossiping about their children or grandchildren. Vendors would sell vegetables or second-hand items on mats. In the afternoons, residents roll up their sleeves & cook, hand-wash laundry or play mahjong with their neighbours

Do check out her storytelling in this IG reel via ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŒ https://www.instagram.com/p/CnMgm1Ygstr/

With longtangs quickly disappearing in the face of modernity, this art installation attempts to address impermanence, tradition & urbanisation. Itโ€™s also the Ms Redโ€™s ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ way of preserving her personal memories of these alleyways & local residents by making art inspired by photographs ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ“ธ that she took while living there. โ€œI wanted to use my art to tell more personal stories of places & people who are important to me. I wanted people to see ๐Ÿ‘€ & feel the relationships I had, & maybe even experience the people & places that I love โค๏ธ in a way that I love them. says Ms Red ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ , who left her career as an architect to be a full-time artist in 2014
