It’s the tunnel that the Thai Development Cooperators or former Malaya Communist Party built as a base camp in 1976 for hiding from air raids & storing food supplies. This was 1๏ธโฃ of the significant base camps in the southern border provinces. Before entering the tunnel, you will see 4๏ธโฃ white pigeon ๐ฆ statues created as a memorial to mark the alliance of the 4๏ธโฃ main communities battling in the war. This tunnel construction used only 40 to 50 people to dig through the mountain โฐ๏ธ & whole construction took only 3๏ธโฃ months to complete ๐ฏโ
with its main purpose was to gain protection from aerial bombing & as a planning base for missions in south borders
This tunnel located in Piyamit 1 village is approximately 50 to 60ft wide & 1๏ธโฃkm long. It can contain almost 200 people & has 9๏ธโฃ entrances that are all connected. At present, only with 6๏ธโฃ accessible entrances. Inside the tunnel, it features a radio station, bedrooms, food supply storage room, several small tums & corners etc. Up on the ground, it’s covered by a dense forest with big trees ๐ณ๐ณ to make it difficult for the government’s military ๐๏ธ๐ช to locate & find this tunnel
From SiennyLovesDrawing’s ๐ฉ๐ป recent visit, this tunnel tour took approximately 2๏ธโฃ hours & it’s well equipped with lights & the air inside is cool & comfortable
There is an old tree ๐ณ that believe by local Thais as Piyamit Millennium Tree, inst-worthy spot ya
In fact, this tunnel was used as a shelter, an operation base, an escape place from air strikes & a provision station in 1976 for about 40 to 50 Malaysian communists who burrowed into the hillside. They have dug the soil manually without any machine for 3๏ธโฃ months
It can house & hold up to 200 pax with its inside air that is cool & well installed with electricity. This tunnel showcases the lifestyle of the native people & interesting history

Now it’s 1๏ธโฃ of the well known & must visit destination when in Betong, Southern Thailand ๐น๐ญย Its cost of constructing was THB150,000,000 ie. Approximately MYR20million paid by the Provincial Community Development Office of Yala. It took 2๏ธโฃ years to complete with services of a local architect from Yala & a contractor from Betong. Its skybridge design was inspired from the local community leaders who have witnessed when they visited the Chiang Mai highlands ๐ years ago. Sweet Salt Farm
The coastal town of Pattani has long been a centre for harvesting salt from the sea ๐ & a trading hub for salt exports to China ๐จ๐ณ & other foreign countries
It’s a unique attraction to visit as it represents the community living, history & cultural heritage of Pattani. Here is the only salt farm in Pattani. The career of making salt has been inherited from the past. The salt is called “Kluea Wan” or sweet salt. It has a good taste, mild salty & usually used in fermenting short-bodied mackerel, making Budu fish sauce, dried fish & to preserving fruits & vegetables of the local Bana community
HmmโฆJust that during SiennyLovesDrawingโs ๐ฉ๐ป recent visit, it’s not the salt harvest season, hence she doesn’t get to see the clear salt farm, instead all farms were flooded with water at that time
HmmโฆA good reason for her to plan another visit to here to observe the salt harvest ๐
These salt farms in Pattani is well known for producing high โฌ๏ธ quality sweet salt by using local traditional methods
These ponds are flooded with shallow sea water. These are left for around ๐ days until the sun ๐โ๏ธ evaporates all the water, leaving the salt to be collected & carried away in shoulder baskets to be bagged. Yes โ
, itโs very much a weather reliant industry & takes place under hot sun ๐โ๏ธ Itโs really hard & heavy works as it requires soil, water ๐ง๐ฆ & sunlight โ๏ธ๐ Hence, salt farming has declined dramatically in recent years due to climate change & unpredictable weather patterns
Over the years, the salt production process has evolved, however the methods used by the local salt farmers here stillย remained & largely unchanged. The farm uses a unique technique called the “kra-dai” method, ie. It involves saline groundwater being collected in salt ponds, then it will allow the evaporate process happened naturally under the sun ๐ This process ensures that the salt is of the highest quality & retains its natural sweetness, hence is well known locally here for it’s mild salty level named as sweet salt, deep salt aka โHarum Manisโ in Malay language
Opposite the road of these salt farms (Note ๐: Do be extra careful when crossing the road), there are plenty of stalls selling sweet salt
SiennyLovesDrawing has a chance to chat with a local sweet salt seller named Pn Korijoh ๐ฉ๐ป๐ฃ๏ธ๐ง๐ป She is originally from Bana, Pattani
Pn Korijoh has explained that raining is a big no no for sweet salt harvesting. It must be hot sunny weather to gain a great ๐๐ป salt harvest, in particular April & May annually
It’s generated from the brackish water from the bay where the fresh water meets the sea water. Each farm with 4๏ธโฃ square ponds, the salt gained from the 1st 3 ponds normally is not so clean to harvest, generally the last pond will harvest great ๐๐ป quality of sweet salt
She briefly explains the process ie. The usage of machines to absorb the sea water to the salt farm. Then, to keep for at least 3๏ธโฃ months to kick start the salt farming & then harvesting
There are some bi-products generated from the sweet salt harvesting. The thin layer of beginning salt harvesting is named as flower salt. The sweet salt & then the dirty sweet salt harvesting which are in grey or black colours will be used as fertiliser instead. Fertiliser salt can be used for rubber trees, coconut ๐ฅฅ trees, & palm ๐ด trees. Sun dung fertilizer is the top layer of fertilizer and is a good quality fertilizer
Ohh yaโฆThe Thai locals here have been working with local academia to create some value-added salt products eg. Flower salt, turmeric cooking salt, as well as some salt-based skincare items. There are many health benefits of flower salt eg. As foot soak for the elderly to help them relax, sleep ๐ฅฑ๐ด better & comfortably
The Bana Salt Farming Group Community Ventures: Community Learning Resources
- Preserve the profession of salt farming
- Increase the production standards of “Iodine supplementing consumption salt”
- Use the wisdom of the community to increase the value of the product “Bana Turmeric Salt”
- Continue the skin health care products “Bana Spa Scrub Salt”

Ohh yaโฆIt’s more than just Al-Quran manuscripts kept here, there are plenty of heritage living antiques are kept here to demonstrate the Malay history ๐ฏ๐๐ป๐๐ป
SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป๐คฉย was amazed to view some of the old Al-Quran were handwritten on papers which made from mulberry wood & goat skin
The beautiful ๐ museum building still yet to be ready to receive its visitors with its amazing nice Pattani & Turkish architecture. All preserved manuscripts of the Al-Quran still kept in the old museum which located right at the back of this ๐ museum
Personally to SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป as a Muslims friendly content creator, it’s a must visit ๐ฏ๐๐ป here to learn greater about the old Islamic traditions of the archipelago & Malay history

Not forgetting some other Muslim friendly & Halal restaurants ie. Laila in Yala, CS Pattani Hotel & Bakkahland Farm and Resort in Pattani in serving good local halal Thai cuisines
CS Pattani Hotel ๐จ opened in 1999 & was built under the concept to preserve Pattanis uniqueness which is integration between southern traditional cultures & Malay – Java arts. It houses a museum which displays Yan Lipao wickerwork & gold nielloware Gold Nielloware ~ The private collections of the hotel’s executives. It opens daily for hotel guests & visitors from 10am to 6pm. Another signature of this hotel is its cha chak Cha Chak aka Southern Thai milk tea. This hotel is the origin of the milk tea which is currently widespread across Thailand. Some of the popular must try foods in Southern Thailand as below,
Nasi Kerabu aka Budu Spicy Rice is a famous Southern Thai dish. It serves with various local vegetables, roasted coconut, dried shrimp or dried fish to enjoy & receive most nutrition value ๐๐ป It’s also the only dish that is eaten with Budu sauce, which is the characteristic of southernmost provinces’ menu
Stir Fried Shrimp with Sator aka Bitter Bean. It’s the original Southern Thailand menu with middle size shrimps ๐ค, bitter beans cut in half seed, chilli ๐ถ๏ธ paste, garlic ๐ง, bird’s eyes chilli, shrimp paste & palm sugar as main ingredients
Fried Water Vegetables (Similar to Small Morning Glory vegetable) is the succulent vegetable, grown in the water, in the cool weather less than 25 degree Celsius, must be the place that water runs from the mountain โฐ๏ธ, which is only in Betong district. SiennyLovesDrawing enjoys it very much, highly recommended, must eat in Betong ya ๐ฉ๐ป๐๐ฏ๐๐ป
Betong Chicken of which the origin Is Liang Zan, China ๐จ๐ณ When Chinese people emigrated from China to settle in Betong, Yala, they brought in the chicken ๐ ๐ & made them widespread till now. There are several shops selling Betong chicken. The chicken meat is yellow & tender while the skin is crisp. Other than that, its smell is odorous. Betong chicken bred around 6๏ธโฃ months will get the best quality & taste. Currently, the demand for chicken is increasing โฌ๏ธ The breeding then is not limited to only Betong, Yala, also spreading far & wide

Interestingly, Southern Thailand ๐น๐ญ is commonly associated & highly concentrated with its Muslims population. Its Muslims community ranks as the 2๏ธโฃnd largest religious group after Buddhism. Hence, various Islamic-themed tourist attractions can be found here
