This Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival is 1️⃣ of Malaysia’s 🇲🇾 most established international cultural events, bringing together more than hundreds of both local & international professional kite flyers / kite surfers & participants from over 56 countries this year 2026 (The highest international participation), including to showcase the diversity of kite 🪁 art & creativity from the newly joined 6️⃣ countries participation this year ie. Algeria 🇩🇿, Greece 🇬🇷, Hungary 🇭🇺, Qatar 🇶🇦, Tunisia 🇹🇳 & Uruguay 🇺🇾

Yes ✅, the international participation for this festival has continuously increased ⬆️ from 39 countries in year 2024 to ⬆️ 44 countries in year 2025 & this year 2026 with 56 countries, bravo 👏🏻 🙌🏻💯👍🏻

This annual international festival is also being expected to be a catalyst for the local tourism & economic sector (Particularly hotels 🏨 , homestays 🏘️ & local eateries 🍽️around Pasir Gudang & Johor Baru) with an expected attendance of over 650K visitors throughout this festival. This Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival was actually established in 1995 as an annual international event to serve as an important platform for cultural exchange & international friendship through the art of kite 🪁 flying. It celebrates both traditional & modern kite flying 🪁, then attracting participants & enthusiasts from around the globe 🌎 It showcases Malaysia’s 🇲🇾 rich kite heritage through traditional designs like Wau Bulan, Wau Merak & Wau Kapal 😍🤩

This 28th edition international-class kite 🪁 festival with the theme “Benua Bertamu di Langit Johor… Meh Lah!” to welcome 🤗 all to witness the beauty of the world’s 🌎 kite art decorating the sky of Pasir Gudang & experience the excitement of this international-class festival 🇲🇾🪁

The organiser, MBPG also held various promotions such as 26 units motorcycle 🏍️convoys to all districts within Johor state to publicize this annual festival 🇲🇾🪁 Yes ✅, as a symbolic pre-launch of this annual festival, the YB Datuk Mayor of Pasir Gudang 👨🏽‍💼 also performed a gimmick of releasing a motorcycle 🏍️ convoy accompanied by MBPG employees & the local community. This said convoy will travel for 2️⃣ days covering districts within Johor for the purpose of promoting this Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival 2026 💯👍🏻

Yet 1️⃣ silent & surprisingly common threat continues to be misunderstood ~ Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Yes ✅, a virus you may never heard of is sending Malaysian babies 🇲🇾👶🏻 to the ICU 🏥 & putting older adults at risk. Doctors & parents reminded all that it’s time to be prepared & act

Often brushed off as just another seasonal cold 🥶, RSV is actually 1️⃣ of the leading causes of serious respiratory 🫁 illness, hospitalisation 🏥 & death among infants 👶🏻 under 6️⃣ months & older adults aged 60 & above 👴🏻👵🏻

Globally, RSV is responsible for over 33 million lower respiratory tract infections in children 👶🏻 under 5️⃣ each year. Of these, 3.6 million cases require hospitalisation 🏥 & nearly 100K results in death ☠️💀 Among older adults 👴🏻👵🏻, particularly those living with diabetes, asthma 🫁, or heart ❤️ conditions, RSV can worsen existing health problems & cause severe complications that mimic or intensify pneumonia & chronic lung disease 🫁

Despite its global burden, RSV often flies under the radar. Most parents & caregivers have never even heard of it ~ Until their loved 1️⃣ ends up in the hospital 🏥

For Dr. Gayathri Mariappa 👩🏿‍⚕️, the danger of RSV became painfully personal when her own son 👶🏻 fell ill at just 4️⃣ months old

“I still remember the fear in my heart ❤️,” says Dr. Gayathri 👩🏿‍⚕️, a Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology of Sunway Medical Velocity 🏥 specialising in Maternal Fetal Medicine

“Despite being a doctor 👩🏿‍⚕️, nothing prepares you for the helplessness of seeing your child experience difficulty breathing 👃🏻🫁, requiring oxygen support & nebulisation. That moment forever changed how I spoke to my patients about prevention.”

Since then, Dr. Gayathri 👩🏿‍⚕️ has made it a mission to raise awareness among expecting mothers 🤰🏻 about RSV & how early protection begins with maternal care. The Emotional & Financial Cost of RSV

Beyond the clinical statistics, RSV takes a heavy emotional & financial toll on families

The Netherlands’ 🇳🇱 BRICK Study, 1️⃣ of the most comprehensive international RSV research efforts, found that nearly 30% of parents whose infants 👶🏻 were hospitalised for RSV showed signs of post-traumatic stress 😬 Families also face lost income from time off work, high ⬆️ hospital bills & the emotional strain of seeing a child or elderly loved ones on life support

From Grandchildren to Grandparents: A Shared Risk

While RSV is often associated with children, its impact on older adults is just as alarming. Seniors 👴🏻👵🏻 with underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart ❤️ disease, or chronic lung 🫁 conditions are especially vulnerable. The concern is particularly significant in Malaysia 🇲🇾, where more than half a million adults live with 4️⃣ or more chronic health conditions, according to the 2023 National Health & Morbidity Survey (NHMS). For this group, even a mild RSV infection can trigger severe complications & hospitalisation 🏥

Many elderly patients 👴🏻👵🏻 infected with RSV may not even realise they are seriously ill 🤢🤧 Symptoms such as fatigue 😞, low-grade fever 🤒 & confusion often resemble those of other common illnesses or may simply be chalked up to old age. As a result, RSV often goes undiagnosed until the condition worsens & complications like pneumonia or heart ❤️ failure occur

“Older adults tend to dismiss early symptoms,” says Dr. Gan 👨🏻‍⚕️

“Unfortunately, by the time they come to us, they are often in much more serious condition than they realise.”

The problem is compounded in multigenerational homes, a common arrangement in Malaysia 🇲🇾 When babies 👶🏻 & grandparents 👴🏻👵🏻 live under the same roof 🏡, the potential for transmission increases ⬆️ During confinement periods or festive gatherings, even a mild cough from 1️⃣ family member could trigger a chain of illness affecting the most fragile members of the household

“This is why we talk about RSV protection as a family issue,” explains Dr. Gayathri 👩🏿‍⚕️

“When a pregnant mother 🤰🏻 is protected, she shields her baby 👶🏻 When an elderly grandparent 👵🏻👴🏻 is protected, they help safeguard the entire home 🏡 It’s about caring for 1️⃣ another, across generations.”

Healthcare professionals are encouraging expectant mothers to speak with their doctors 👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️ about immunisation during pregnancy 🤰🏻 These conversations during routine antenatal visits can make all the difference. Meanwhile, adult children are urged to ensure that their elderly parents 👴🏻👵🏻 are up to date with their respiratory-related vaccinations 💉, particularly during the rainy season 🌧️☔

Recognising RSV early is equally important. Symptoms in both infants 👶🏻 & the elderly 👵🏻👴🏻 include coughing 😷, wheezing, difficulty breathing 👃🏻🫁, fatigue 😞 & poor appetite. In older adults, signs such as confusion or unusual tiredness 🥱😩 should also be taken seriously

Yes ✅, both joined together The “Journey to Jishin” fun run 👩🏻👧🏻🏃🏻‍♀️ recent weekend which being hosted by Tsubaki, Fino, Ma cherie & Senka

It flagged off 7️⃣am early morning on 1 June 2025 (Sunday) at 📍 DBKL Square in Kuala Lumpur city centre, Malaysia 🇲🇾

It’s a Japanese-themed run with Koiburi 鯉のぼり aka satsuki-nobori 皐のぼり that it actually featured a 5️⃣km & 7️⃣km route with a vibrant carnival area offering 🆓 activities like horse 🐴 🐎 cart riding (3 units), photo 📸 booths, 360 video 📹 booth & face painting 🎨🖌️

By joining in this fun run race, SiennyLovesDrawing & her little niece 👩🏻👧🏻 both learnt about this carp-shaped windsocks 🎏 traditionally flown in Japan 🇯🇵 to celebrate 🥳🎉🎊 端午の節句 Tango No Sekku ie. A traditional event & NOW being designated as 子供の日 Kodomo No Hi ie. Children’s Day annually on 5 May ~ A national holiday in Japan 😁

This fun run also promises the fascinating aspect of Japan 🇯🇵 & the culture of 1️⃣ of its festivals

On the early morning 🌞 , YB Datuk Seri Dr. Zaliha binti Mustafa 🧕🏻, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) together with YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif 🧕🏻, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur has flagged off 🏁 the participants of the Jishin Fun Run in conjunction with the 1 June 2025 edition of the KL Car 🆓 Morning (KLCFM) program which took place at Dataran DBKL, Kuala Lumpur

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻🏃🏻‍♀️✅ used to participate in KLCFM. It’s held every week, as a leisure & physical activity, also an important advocacy medium in efforts to make Kuala Lumpur as a healthy, environmentally friendly, sustainable & livable city 🌇🌆

This Jishin Fun Run also demonstrates a strong co-operation through the 4️⃣P approach ~ Public, Private, People & Partnership which encourages the active involvement of various parties in forming a more inclusive & progressive urban community

Ohh ya…More interesting is that each participant actually received a Koinoburi 🎏 windsock to run with during the race

So, there were few colours to choose from ie. Black 🖤, Orange 🧡, Blue 💙, Pink 💗& Green 💚

Cultural info 📌:  The black 🖤 koinobori represent the father in the family, red ♥️ koinobori the mother,  blue 💙 the eldest child, green 💚 & orange 🧡 for the other siblings

Also as an annual festival about Ancestor Memorialization, in fact more than just a tradition. It involves recognizing & respecting the contributions & sacrifices of our ancestors. Indeed a way of keeping their memory alive, of connecting with our roots & of understanding our place in the world 🌎
