She as an invited media member has witnessed the official winners announcement & prize 🏆 giving ceremony of the 1️⃣st-ever MR D.I.Y. Regional Art Competition, with the theme “Identity & Diversity”

This inaugural competition brought together talented artists from Indonesia 🇮🇩, Malaysia 🇲🇾 & Thailand 🇹🇭, marking an exciting 🆕 chapter for MR D.I.Y.’s long-running art 👨🏻‍🎨🧑🏻‍🎨👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️ initiative

The MR D.I.Y. Regional Art Exhibition presents a vibrant showcase of Southeast Asian storytelling, featuring artworks by national winners from 3️⃣ countries, each selected to compete at the regional level. Each piece offers a creative reflection on themes of identity, heritage & diversity, weaving together personal & cultural narratives

This impressive art exhibition is open to the public at MR D.I.Y. Plus in 📍 Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, from NOW till 17 Nov 2025

A distinguished panel of 9️⃣ judges comprising representatives from Malaysia 🇲🇾, Thailand 🇹🇭 & Indonesia 🇮🇩 convened on 30 Oct 2025 to evaluate the submissions

The judging criteria focused on creativity, originality & the artists’ interpretation of the theme

The panel from Malaysia 🇲🇾 consisted of Mr Ivan Gabriel, Mr Bingley Sim & Ms Liong Mei Yin. From Thailand 🇹🇭, the panel comprised of Vichaya Mukdamanee, Subhachog Jumsai Na Ayudhya & Watjanasin Charuwattanakitti, while Indonesia 🇮🇩 was represented by Ristyo Hartanto, Budhy Irawati & Haryadi Tandio

The grand prize 🏆 for the Public Category was awarded to Mohd Al-Khuzairie (Malaysia 🇲🇾) for the evocative artwork titled “In the Mood for Love: Time & Memory”. The grand prize 🏆 in the Educational Category went to Ms Diandra Lamees (Indonesia 🇮🇩) for her expressive piece entitled “Upacara Imlek Versiku”

Commenting on the initiative, MR D.I.Y. Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Adrian Ong 👨🏻‍💼said, “This competition represents more than just art. It’s a celebration of who we are as a region

By connecting ↔️ artists from different countries, we hope to inspire more creativity, understanding & appreciation of the diverse cultures that make up Southeast Asia 🌏”

Launched in 2022, the MR D.I.Y. Art Competition aimed to nurture homegrown artistic talent and foster a vibrant, inclusive creative ecosystem in Malaysia 🇲🇾 The overwhelming response from local participants demonstrated the competition’s impact & potential, which encouraged MR D.I.Y. to expand the initiative to other nations, mirroring the brand’s regional expansion. Through this platform, MR D.I.Y. continue to champion arts & culture as powerful drivers of community, identity & social connection

Hmm….This is a long throwback story of her media attendance to witness the special screening of ~ Wang Kelian – The Forgotten Valley / Lembah Yang Kian Hilang back in Sept 2023, Malaysia Day ~ In fact, do read on as it’s more about this beautiful valley & the great 💯👍🏻 continuous efforts behind for its sustainable eco & rural tourism, as well as community tourism

Yes ✅, the documentary was shown on a big screen for the 1️⃣st time at GSC cinema 🎥, Lalaport BBCC

A big congratulations 👏🏻 🎉 to her friend, Mr Peter Ong 🙋🏻‍♂️, a wildlife photographer & biodiversity environmentalist , also the producer of this mentioned documentary ~ Wang Kelian – The Forgotten Valley / Lembah Yang Kian Hilang ~ & his team. So proud of the great 💯👍🏻 works done

She actually met Mr Peter Ong 🙋🏻‍♂️during her earlier media attendance for the Perlis ecotourism trip with Tourism Malaysia & Malaysia Airlines/ Firefly Airlines. He is so friendly & passionate in sharing his projects at Wang Kelian throughout, including the night walk in Perlis State Park aka Taman Negeri Perlis too. Ohh ya…He taught everyone that at night, you will be able to spot the wild animals by observing their eyes reflection 👁️👀

This is a joint collaborative project 🤝🏻 between Roots & Shoots Malaysia (FB: @rootsandshootsmy) & Perlis Nature and Wildlife (FB: @PerlisNatureAndWildlife) with Project Mission to photograph 📸, film 📽️ & document 📃 the unique biodiversity & cultural heritage of the forests 🌳 🌳 surrounding Wang Kelian & Kaki Bukit from late Jan to March 2023 in Perlis, the northernmost state of Malaysia 🇲🇾 & with natural boundary from Thailand 🇹🇭

SiennyLovesDrawing also met & had a good chat with Mr Syamil Abd Rahman 🙋🏽‍♂️, the Perlis local & founder of Perlis Nature and Wildlife. She got impressed by the enthusiasm, passionate & love that Mr Syamil has demonstrated towards his love to his works & making Perlis, his home state a greater nature destination for flora & fauna diversity

There were a series of activities ie. A 150 page dual-language book 📖 in English & Bahasa Malaysia, a 30mins documentary 📹 & a 4️⃣ month exhibition that was held to showcase the discoveries made

Background: Wang Kelian, Perlis 🇲🇾

At the northernmost point of the northernmost state in Peninsular Malaysia 🇲🇾 lies a village which is hugged by the ancient Nakawan Range in a valley which was once completely cut off from the rest of the country until the arrival of the main trunk road 🛣️ This 370 million year old mountain range ⛰️ which runs for 36km from the Thai border all the way to the Straits of Malacca is home to many unique species of flora & fauna

This includes the unique Stump-Tailed Macaque or Beruk Kentoi (Macaca arctoides) whose Malaysian population can only be found within the vicinity of Wang Kelian. This species is usually found further up north until the foothills of the Himalayas. Also known as the Bear Macaque, it has thick shaggy brown fur with red facial markings. The population in Wang Kelian does not cross over the Thai border nor do they go down south to the rest of the country which makes them uniquely Perlisian

These forests 🌳🌳 are home to 7️⃣ species of primates, making it one of the densest & richest forests in terms of biodiversity. The other primate species found here are the Long-Tailed Macaque, the Southern Pig-Tailed Macaque, the Dusky Langur, the rare Robinson’s Banded Langur, the endangered Lar Gibbon & the nocturnal Sunda Slow Loris

Birds are also aplenty in this part with regular sightings of the Great Hornbill, White-Crowned Hornbill, Changeable Hawk Eagles 🦅, Blue-Crowned Hanging Parrots 🦜, Orange-Breasted Trogon, Grey-Capped Pygmy Woodpecker & many more. The Dusky Eagle Owl 🦉 once thought to have disappeared completely from Malaysia 🇲🇾 was discovered by the team on the slopes of Wang Kelian while it was waiting to hunt

Even the caves here are filled with biodiversity. Some of the amazing encounters by the team in the darkness of these caves include the rarely seen Asiatic Brush-Tailed Porcupine (Atherurus macrourus) or Landak nibung & the Asian Leaf Turtle 🐢 (Cyclemis dentata), which is usually found on higher elevations

Another surprising discovery that was made was the existence of a ghost orchid species Chiloschista exuperei usually found from Thailand all the way to Yunan, China 🇨🇳 it has never been recorded in Malaysia prior to this

An archeological discovery was also made during this project with the findings of pottery ⚱️🏺 fragments & stone 🪨 tools from a prehistoric age indicating that ancient humans once settled in this area

Impacts: Sustainable eco, rural & community tourism

It’s hoped that this project will be able to spark off the growth of Wang Kelian & the Perlis State Park 🏞️ as an ecotourism destination in Malaysia 🇲🇾 It has everything for a nature lover to experience: ancient forests 🌳🌳, incredible & unique biodiversity, hiking 🥾 trails, limestone peaks to climb, caves, rivers, & so much more

The growth 📈 of ecotourism will also encourage more people not just to get to know our own country but also to spur economic growth for the local communities which emphasises the conservation of the land & all who live there

Yes ✅, personally to SiennyLovesDrawing, this similar sustainable eco, rural & community tourism efforts should also replicate to other states within Malaysia 🇲🇾 over time

The exhibition was run for 4️⃣ months at Hotel Putra Brasmana, Kuala Perlis, on weekends from 27 May to the end of Sept 2023 with intentions to spread greater awareness among the Perlis locals

This time, she 👩🏻 has enjoyed a pleasant comfy approximately 1️⃣ hour flight journey with Firefly Airlines (Firefly) ✈️💺🧡 to arrive at Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, Alor Setar, Kedah 🇲🇾

Still remembered her last fly with Firefly ✈️💺🧡, in fact her 1️⃣st ride was in year 2019, yes ✅, before the global health pandemic to Kota Bahru, Kelantan. Firefly 🛩️💺🧡 is a low-cost carrier subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines that offers flights within Malaysia 🇲🇾 , as well as to Indonesia 🇮🇩 , Singapore 🇸🇬 & Thailand 🇹🇭 There are 28x weekly flight to Alor Setar, Kedah from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB)

Since there are limited flights at this smaller airport at SZB, she has enjoyed a much faster & smoother immigration process here comparatively to KLIA & KLIA2 💯👍🏻 This absolutely helpful especially when she was panicking thought that she was gonna be late for her flight boarding due to the technical error from her AirAsia ride booking that early morning, huh…She felt grateful 🙏🏻 of meeting lots of nice people at the airport that morning that advised her to jump queue so to still arrive at the boarding gate on time 😇🙏🏻🤗

Tips 📌: You can now take MRT shuttle bus 🚌 no. T804 from Gate A of MRT Kwasa Sentral to reach Subang Airport ✈️, so easy convenient & hassle 🆓

During this short flight journey ✈️🧡, she was served with a small bottle of mineral water, a packet of Famous Amos cookies 🍪 & a packet of salted peanuts 🥜 from the friendly air stewardess

No doubt it’s slightly a noisier & bumpier ride on a smaller plane with Firefly ✈️💺🧡 She suggests to reading the inflight magazine ~ Going Places 📖 or enjoy the window view ya 😍

Alor Setar aka the Rice Bowl of Malaysia for its fertile agricultural land & significant contribution to overall Malaysia rice production 🇲🇾🌾🍚

It’s the birthplace of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the 1️⃣st Prime Minister, also Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the 4️⃣th & 7️⃣th Prime Minister of Malaysia 🇲🇾

Bandaraya Alor Setar, Kedah

You will enjoy the green rice 🌾 fields along your road trip within this state as you passed by

Suggest to drop by at Dataran Alor Setar to visit the beautiful elegant Zahir mosque 🕌, Alor Setar tower 🗼, Nobat Tower, Balai Besar, Yellow Palace, Kedah Royal Museum, Kedah State Art Gallery etc. All within walking 🚶🏻‍♀️ distance

According to Mr Syafiq 🙋🏽‍♂️, the tour guide of her trip, the local here enjoys to bring their family members & friends to do berbuka puasa picnic here during the Ramadan month 😁

Kedah Royal Museum aka Muzium Diraja Kedah

This museum is under the management of State Government & located in an old classic palace which was once named as Istana Kota Setar & Istana Mak Wan Besar which was built during the opening of Alor Setar as the administrative centre of Kedah in year 1735 by the late Duli Yang Maha Mulia (DYMM) Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Mu’adzam Shah I (1710-1778). In addition to being inhabited by several Sultans of Kedah, this palace was also used to house Japanese soldiers during the Japanese invasion of Malaya during the 2️⃣nd World War

It was also named as Istana Pelamin/ Rumah Pelamin after the royal wedding ceremony which was held in 1904. Hence, at the entrance you will note a royal wedding ceremony set up 👑💖

In 1983, this classic structure began to be restored & then renovated to turn into an air conditioning museum with 🆓 admission to enjoy a good 👍🏻 collection of photographs, information & artefacts from the royal family of Kedah DYMM Sultan Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah & other royal families. It’s officially open on 15 July 1983 in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Kedah DYMM Sultan Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah

During SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 recent visit, certain part within this museum was closed due to the rooftop leak & currently in the midst of repairing progress to restore 🛠️, not to worry as it doesn’t affect your visit at all 👍🏻

Personally, she highly recommend you all to check out these 2️⃣ exhibits during your visit to this royal museum,

A songkok decorated with birds of paradise feathers 🪶🪶 along with a costume & a sword 🗡️ to the late Kedah DYMM Sultan Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah when he received the Orders of The White Elephant First Class medal 🎖️in 1895 which carries the title of Chao Phraya Saiburi
The White Elephant First Class medal 🎖️, a gift medal from the King of Siam, King Chulalongkorn to the late Kedah DYMM Sultan Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah on 24 Aug 1895 when he was awarded the title of Chao Phraya Saiburi

Sharing the theme of this 2023 festival, ‘REFLECTIONS’, the Minister invited the audience to reflect on the humble beginnings of RWMF, with merely 300 spectators for its 1️⃣st-ever concert back in 1998. The event has now grown to be Sarawak’s ‘Star Festival’ & internationally renowned platform, it even being recognised as 1️⃣ of the 25 best International Festivals, placing Sarawak in a position to be the Regional Hub for Music Tourism & Performing Arts

Yes ✅, RWMF is listed as Top 25 Best International Festivals awarded by Songlines Magazine for 6️⃣ consecutive years ie. 2010 to 2015👏🏻👍🏻💯

Proactive measures had been taken by Sarawak towards creating & implementing a sustainable, eco-friendly festival in previous editions of the festival. Together with the State’s tourism players for the RWMF, STB had previously embarked on activities which included ❌ banning of single use plastics, encouraging upcycling used materials, exploring innovative solutions to waste management & even providing shuttle buses 🚌🚌 to ferry festival-goers to alleviate carbon emission, energy conservation & environmental education, encouraging participation in greening initiatives 💚 all towards making Responsible Tourism the ‘norm’

This festival 🎊🎉 is important to communicating to public 👭👬👫 the importance of protecting our wetlands 🌳🌱🏞 in Malaysia 🇲🇾 Wetlands 🌳🌱🏞 provide a sustainable livelihood not just for birds🦅🐦, also for the productive fishery 🐟🐠 areas, the cockle 🐚 beds, the firefly 🦗 habitats, the paddy 🌾 fields etc. It also create awareness to public 👭👫👬 on the various nature 💚 & animal conservation efforts in Malaysia 🇲🇾 e.g. Hornbill, Sunbear 🐻, PAKAS etc.

Birdwatching Cruising 🦅🐦🚤 @ Sungai Burung

An enjoyable yet under the superb hot sunny 🔆🔆 day to cruising 🚤 along Sungai Burung & to enjoy viewing the resident & migratory birds 🦅🐦

Our boatman, Pakcik Sahar 👨🏽 also shared cockle 🐚 harvesting during the cruising 🚤 with us. The cockles 🐚🐚 are all big & fresh 😆😄

Guess what❓⁉️

We got some horseshoe crabs too, but then releasing them back to the river 💦💧 as they are just baby crabs ~ tiny in size 😁

Fireflies Cruising 🛶 @ Kampung Kuantan

Before the boat cruising, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has visited the tree 🌳🌳 planting centre as habitat conservation efforts for the fireflies 👍🏻

Not to be missed the beautiful sunset moment at jetty before the fireflies cruising 🛶

She 👩🏻 has recalled that she 👩🏻 was amazed 🤩😍 with the Chrismas trees 🎄💫 alike surrounding when her parents 👴🏻👵🏻 brought her 👩🏻 when she was a kid 👧🏻 for fireflies cruising 🛶

Hmm….Quite sad 😔😢 to share that the Christmas trees 🎄💫 effects no longer as great 👍🏻 as before. The fireflies numbers are declining ⬇️ mainly due to the pollution, degradation of the water 💦💧quality, clearing of river 💦💧 reserves & mangroves 💚🌳🌱🏞 closer to the fireflies viewing 👀 sites etc. She 👩🏻 is proud & happy 😃 that various of conservation 💚 efforts has been made to conserve and rehabilitate their habitat e.g. trees 🌳🌳 planting project with Berembang trees & Nipah trees

She 👩🏻 highly recommends👆🏻to enjoy the boat 🛶 cruising from Kampung Kuantan because the local community 👫👭👬 here still using the small wooden boats 🛶 aka sampan in Malaysia 🇲🇾’s national language. The boats 🛶🛶 are steered manually by a boatman 👨🏽👨🏽 during the cruising 🛶 There is another venue for fireflies cruising 🛶 named Bukit Belimbing where electronic boats 🚤 are being used

She 👩🏻 was told the fireflies are more impressive 🤩🤩 if it hasn’t rained 🌧☔️ shortly before & if it is not a full moon 🌕 night 🌃

Basic firefly-watching 👀 etiquette includes,

Do not use your torch 🔦 / use flash 📸 to capture photos/ videos 📹🎥 during the fireflies cruising 🛶 as this will disturb & disrupt the fireflies’ mating
Not to talk loudly 🗣 & making unnecessary noise during the cruising 🛶
No smoking 🚭 & littering ❌ is allowed during the cruising 🛶
Quietly enjoy the nature light 💫💫 show by the fireflies. If you catch the fireflies & brought home 🏡, a fine of RM1️⃣k will be imposed

Bioblitz Seminar 2018

This is the KSNP for Ramsar Seminar being organised by MNS with aims to present the latest data 📑📊📈 on the results of scientists 👨🏻‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬 & volunteers research about the biodiversity in KSNP 💚🌳🌳💚

All the presentations of findings 📊📈 from it will then be used as the supporting documents 📑 for the preparation & submission of KNSP 💚🌳🌳💚 as a new 🆕 Ramsar Site in Malaysia 🇲🇾

It was a crowded seminar & she 👩🏻 was impressed 🤩 with all the researches & actions done by the MNS & other nature conservation NGOs’ volunteers 👫👭👬

Also she 👩🏻 has met the founders (a couple) 👫 of KNSP 💚🌳🌳💚 from this seminar

Guess what❓⁉️

An engineer named Mr Muhammad Akhir 👨🏻‍🏭 was being asked ❓⁉️to build a golf ⛳️🏌️‍♀️🏌️‍♂️ course from this park 💚🌳🌳💚 area, he has then managed to replace the plan by swapping it into a nature park i.e. KNSP today 💚🌳🌳💚

His wife, Ms Alice 👩🏼‍💼 from UK 🇬🇧 also played an important role towards realised this golf course ⛳️🏌️‍♀️🏌️‍♂️ vs nature park 💚🌳🌳💚 mission back then. It was since 1987, such a long long time for this couple 👫

A privilege to have a short interview 📹🎥 with of of them 👫 & observed their truly inspiring passionate for nature conservation 💚💚 Bravo ‼️👍🏻💪🏻👏🏻🙌🏻

It’s a meaningful 2️⃣D1️⃣N trip to appreciate the on going ecotourism & nature conservation 💚 efforts towards in Kuala Selangor
