Aka Masjid Bandaraya Kuching is the main mosque in Kuching, Sarawak, which had served as the state mosque before a 🆕 mosque was built in Petra Jaya. Its design is based on the modular modern vernacular typology that was formulated in the 1960s by the Public Works Department (JKR). The current structure was completed in 1968, but its historical background can be traced as far back as in 1840. The mosque’s site is believed to be among the oldest mosques in Kuching & was founded by a local leader appointed by the Brunei Sultanate known as a Pangeran. It existed long before the arrival of the White Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke. At that time, it was just a rudimentary vernacular structure set on a hill along the banks of the Sarawak River
The location of the mosque is unique as it was built along the banks overlooking the Sarawak River & is also at the edge of the town centre, near many centuries-old shop houses & a commercial area. As the town grew over the years, it became the focal point of the city. It’s truly a city mosque that completes the composition of the fabric of a former colonial town

It’s built more than a century ago, Masjid Jamek is 1️⃣ of the Malaysia’s 🇲🇾oldest mosques. It was officiated by the-then Sultan of Selangor in 1909, 2️⃣ years after construction was completed & served as the city’s main mosque before Masjid Negara was built. Located at the confluence of Klang River & Gombak River, the mosque stands on the city’s 1️⃣st Malay burial ground. It was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback & features Neo-Moorish architectural style reminiscent of colonial buildings in Northern India 🇮🇳
Not far from Masjid Jamek across the Gombak River is the equally-historical Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which was designed by the same architect & shares a similar style. Masjid Jamek is a fine example of Islamic architecture in British Malaya that was built in the early 20th century. The design resembles Islamic architecture in northern India, which is used not only for Islamic buildings but also as administrative buildings during the British Colonial era
Amidst Malaysia’s diverse cultural backdrop, these mosques stand tall as captivating embodiments of creativity, faith & unity. With a legacy dating back centuries, these mosques reflect the nation’s multicultural identity & its harmonious blend of architectural styles
