Midnight Anglers

Midnight Anglers

DSC_7943Dozens of enthusiastic young men were angling on a bridge linking Bahrain’s capital, Manama and the island of Muharraq at midnight yesterday.
While it is not often surprising to see a few of them on the busy Shaikh Isa bin Salman Causeway, I found so many at the same time, and at that hour, unusual.
“Oh, but it’s the weekend,” said one of them, when I asked a question. “You can take pictures but not for a newspaper…
“We do this every Thursday evening, late into the night.
“We do catch some rather large fish sometimes but mostly it’s enough for a Friday BBQ with friends.
“And it’s a great pastime.”
Great thought, I must admit. At least they are doing something very productive – and staying out of trouble!

Trash the garbage

DSC_7141The trash that we leave behind on our beaches and a lack of proper cleaning infrastructure seems to have caught up with this seagull as it took flight on Bahrain’s Busaiteen coast. While trying to ‘capture’ some of the birds that routinely make the coast their home in the evening, I ‘got’ this one with a string, possibly from a disused fishing line, attached to its feet.
I can only imagine it must have caused our feathered friend a lot of discomfort, if not resulted in a serious injury. The least those who frequent the coastal area to fish and picnic can do is to take their trash with them or properly dispose it off!
