Superman’s Bahraini

“Not only am I awesome, I’m Bahraini too” says a sticker outside this curio shop tucked away in the by-lanes of Old Muharraq Town. And, of course, one cannot help but notice a larger than life-size model of Superman, wearing the traditional Bahraini headgear. Maybe, the sticker should’ve read: “Not only am I awesome, I’m Superman – and Bahraini.”

Tyred and tested

DSC_9181 DSC_9188 DSC_9192 DSC_9632I Street protests all over the world, including in some of the word’s most advanced nations are marked, among other things, with burning tyres. But, thanks to an innovative idea by officials of Bahrain’s Interior Ministry, tyres are used to create objects of art and decoration. These not only present a very pleasing sight for anyone who looks at them, it also provides food for thought for those who indulge in acts of arson and vandalism. After all, there is so much more one can do with tyres, burning them not being one!

Manama ‘street art’

20141115_125855 20141115_125851This is what the ‘street art’ looks like in a ‘suburb’ of Manama, the Bahrain capital.
Inhabited by hundreds of thousands of blue-collared workers from the Indian Sub Continent and The Philippines.
Very few, if at all, local people stay in this area, which is also full of shops selling Asian food as well as restaurants.
Then there are several churches, mosques where the Friday sermon is in the language of the congregation as well as traditional tailoring shops and cobblers.
The “art” in the pictures are “advertising” posters and notices stuck on plywood condoning off a construction site.
They offer accommodation of various kinds, tuition classes, short courses, house moving and computer services.
It’s a complete “city” in itself, where people of several nationalities and hundreds of cultures intermingle and co-exist in their own private space!

Central Bus Stop.

This, truly, is a “speaking” picture. Just brilliant!
