This, too, is life

ManOnStreet1ManOnStreet

When I took these pictures, all I had in mind were portraits. But when I looked at them later, I could “see” a lot more. The pain, the longing, the forlorn looks, the emptiness, the hope and, perhaps, the hunger.
These two men are among the countless millions around the world who are not only homeless, but perhaps have no family and haven’t had a good meal in a while.
It is appalling how much misery there is in this world and it is beyond me how we, being in so much comfort ourselves, can allow this to happen.
Not that my writing these few paragraphs would make a difference; I would also, in a few hours, forget this and carry on with my life, but, at some point (and soon), I would wish to dedicate myself to feeding the hungry, contributing to looking after those who need care and trying to be useful in a society that sees a lot of pain, anguish, greed, violence and a just plain simple “how do I care” attitude.
Taking care of the elderly, working in palliative care and educating children whose parents are unable to send them to school are some of the other thoughts that come to mind.
This is a “bucket list” of things I wish to do. And, the sooner the better because one never knows what tomorrow brings. And, that “tomorrow” can come at any time!

Soaking in the sunset

20130205_171016 20130205_171021 20130205_171024It’s the sunset again, without the sun this time.
Bahrain’s Tubli coast is not known to attract very many migratory birds and certainly not during this time of the year when temperatures are touching 40C.
However, this pretty bird (looks like a Japanese crane) seemed oblivious to the hot weather and ventured out into the open sea looking for food.
The setting sun, the brilliant orange and the ‘lone ranger’ make for what I thought an interesting composition.
However, I wonder what’s made this beautiful creature stay behind when all of its friends are perhaps in far away lands, soaking in the cooler summer sun!
Strange are the ways of nature!

Pigeons’ cat

DSC_0851To most people, this might look bizarre. A cat among pigeons! And everyone seems to be perfectly at home. I have never known cats and birds to co-exist and remember once seeing a feline ruthlessly ‘execute’ the neighbour’s pet parrot. Which led him to bring another one and that, too, was summarily taken apart.
In the not too distant past, I have sometimes seen cats and chicken together, looking for food in the same rubbish heap but they’ve always been at a safe distance.
On this Muharraq street, however, it’s all peace in the name of food. A tad bit untidy and littered but a sight all the same as the rather large cat sits patiently for its turn while the pigeons feed!
Nature has some strange sights up its sleeve!
