Moods on the weekend

A trip to Bahrain’s Old Manama Suq can be exhausting if you are not able to stand crowds, the heat and the grime and the noise. But this is exactly what I did last evening. While I expected to catch some pictures of the old buildings and the stalls selling a variety of stuff, it was virtually impossible to do that in the pushing and the jostling that made it very difficult to stand in one place. I finally found a corner and stood relatively still for nearly an hour to catch the “moods”, thanks to the zoom lens.
The myriad expressions and the emotions are clearly visible on people’s faces as they go about their business.

The park at Al Areen

This rather surrealistic view of a park at Bahrain’s Al Areen Wildlife Reserve conveys the feeling one gets when relaxing there on a lazy weekend afternoon. While the reserve attracts thousands of visitors, this corner, surprisingly, is deserted, with most people in the midst of the hundreds of migratory birds, for whom this place is home in the winter.

The weekend sale

This gentleman, perhaps well into his 80s, sells “electronics” at a roadside “flea market” over the weekend. While it is creditable that even at this ripe old age, he has found something useful to do, it’s quite amazing to see all those things he’s selling actually work – be it the “vintage” mobile phones, the watches or the ancient transistor radio!
Full marks to enterprise!

Market Day

This pick-up truck is weighed down with “tonnes” of used clothes, books and other articles that are being taken to the famed “Friday Market” in Bahrain’s Isa Town. This is a common sight on the streets around the venue every Thursday afternoon when the temporary market opened for business.
Over three days, people can buy anything from used furniture, clothes, books, car and machine spare parts, gardening tools and even genuine antiques. Pets (many of them allegedly stolen, and including dogs, cats, parrots, peacocks and rabbits) are also on sale even though they have attracted the attention of animal rights activists.
One can easily find a bargain if one has the patience and the energy to spend time there and weather the extreme summer heat!

Sitting stew

This classic once again appeared last night on our dinner table. The weekend is always lazy, particularly in this extremely hot weather, so one has to try and manage with the ‘easy cook’ options. And what better way to do it than use the ‘slow cooker’!
Just get as many vegetables as possible, chop them, add tomato and onion, as well as a little ginger and garlic, mix everything in the cooker dish and ‘sit’ a large whole chicken in the centre, taking care to stuff some of the veggies into the cavity. Make sure you add the required spices (again, anything according to taste goes) – salt, chilli powder, cumin, coriander, garam masala etc. Also add a tablespoon of oil.
Set the cooker at 80C and leave it for five to six hours. The result is as one can imagine! It’s worth the wait!
