Sneaky the Cat Interviews Baby, the Dog from Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder, the First Baker Street Mystery by V.M. Burns

Hello, Miss Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

Champion Crooner ’Ol Blue Eyes, One for My Baby is my registered name. That’s what the American Kennel Club uses. However, my “call name” is Baby. A call name, is basically a nickname. My author’s name is Valerie Burns, although sometimes she uses her initials, V.M. Burns.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder is the first book in the Baker Street Mystery cozy series. This is the first book where I’ve appeared, but it won’t be the last.

I hope not. I have six books so far in my Cobble Cove cozy mystery series, and I hope my author writes another soon although she’s currently tied up with the new Buttercup Bend series.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

Yes, I am in a series. The Baker Street Mystery is a culinary cozy mystery series. Two Parts Murder, One Part Sugar is the first book in the series. I used to live with a wonderful woman named Octavia Baker. She raised me from a puppy. However, when she died, she left her house, her bakery, and me, to her great-niece, Madison. Maddy doesn’t know the first thing about running a bakery or taking care of a 250lb English Mastiff. So, I have to help her. Octavia was a smart woman. She knew that Maddy might try to sell everything and return to her old life. Octavia stipulated that in order to inherit, Maddy couldn’t sell anything for one year. She had to stay in New Bison, run the bakery, and take care of me (although I’m the one who ends up taking care of her). Not long after Maddy arrives in town, the mayor is murdered in the bakery and Maddy’s fingerprints are all over the murder weapon. With the help of her new friends (and me, of course), she has to figure out whodunit.

That sounds pawsome.

 Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

My author loves dogs, but she doesn’t have an English Mastiff. She has two toy poodles, Kensington (Kenzie) and Chloe. For two small little fluff balls, they’re pretty cool. I think they both have a crush on me, which makes it hard. I can’t show favoritism. But, we all get along well. My author does a lot of research about dogs that she really wants to own (and there are lots of them). She’s got tons of books on dogs and spends a LOT of time surfing the Internet and something called, Instagram, looking at pictures of English Mastiffs. She also has friends that have mastiffs who feed her information that she uses in her books.

My author is a cat person, but she her parents had poodles and German Shepherds when she lived at home.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

My first human, Maddy’s Great Aunt Octavia, used to tell me that without me, she would be lost. I believe her. Now, that Octavia’s gone and I have to look out for Maddy, my paws are full. My role in Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder is vitally important. Trust me, protecting my human is a full-time job. I honestly, don’t know how she survived this long without me.

 What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I like the times that I spend with Maddy at night when she talks to me and gets my opinion about the people she’s investigating. I also like hanging out at the bakery. Quite a few thumbprint cookies fall on the floor, which is my domain.

Alicia doesn’t talk to me about the murders she’s investigating, but I am quite observant and am always able to lend a paw.

  1. Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I don’t talk, but my human is able to understand exactly what I mean based on my facial expressions and body language. Sometimes, I have to get a bit more aggressive and bark or show my teeth, but she eventually figures it out. She’s new in New Bison, Michigan, so I’ve had to let her know who the good guys are, and who she should avoid like the plague.

Sounds like you’ve mastered non-verbal communication. So have I, although in my latest stories, I let the readers and my pet co-stars understand my thoughts. I only use non-verbal cues with Alicia and my other human co-stars.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

Remember, it’s up to us to train our humans. My human, Maddy, didn’t know the first thing about taking care of a dog, or cooking, or pretty much anything other than shopping. But, she’s a fast learner. No matter how clueless your human may be, you can’t give up.

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder was released on August 30, 2022.  My author has another book with her toy poodles, which is part of her Mystery Bookshop Mystery series. The 8th book in that series, Bookclubbed to Death, will release in December 2023.

I’m a pretty big deal but I’m just getting started so I’m only in Much Ado About Nauticaling and Something Fishy This Way Comes as of right now. More coming though!

Yep! Whit and Whiskers Mysteries. I really feel the two names should be flipped but I wasn’t consulted. My Whitney Dagner is an amateur sleuth now. We used to live in Long Beach in California but she moved us to Catalina Island off the coast and we moved in with Maribel who is very good at belly rubs.

Oooh, I love belly rubs.

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

Yep, long ago, Gabby had a cat named Mistletoe when she was a teenager. I’m based on him but I’m much much better as a female feline with all the charm!

Being male, I don’t agree. However, my cat co-star in the Cobble Cove mysteries, KittyKai, would.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it. I should be in far more scenes and I’m hoping Gabby does that more going forward. I draw all the readers!

After clicking on Whisker’s leash, I stepped out of the golf cart and let her frolic as we walked through the artificial turf. She rolled, she clawed, she attempted the downward facing dog pose to stretch out her spine, and then she trotted. Sometimes I was convinced she thought she was a dog. She’d never pranced, but she was only a few years old. There was still time for that at some point.

The trek wasn’t far, so I used the time to run through the things I had planned for the rest of the week. Dinner with the grandparents and Felix tonight, inventory over the next few days, and apparently a delivery for Goldy, the grandmother who refused to be called any such thing. When my brother and I were younger, we’d tried a host of different names for our only remaining grandmother, but she would have none of it and constantly corrected us with “Goldy” until it stuck.

And what exactly was I receiving from Goldy, and would I really want to consign it in the shop? Then again how was I going to say no? It would have to wait though. Whiskers and I were at the last bend before the area I was looking for would come into sight, and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to get hit by someone’s overzealous or off-target stroke.

Glancing up, I zeroed-in on the area I was aiming for, but instead of just a tree with a small place for a hole in the dirt at the base where I normally buried the box to be found by the customer, I found myself staring at a screaming match between Manny and Aaron, who stood next to Aaron’s golf cart.

I should never have thrown that out into the Universe. She’d probably taken it as a challenge and told the moon to hold her beer.

The closer I got, the more I didn’t think they were fighting, though. Manny appeared to be trying to calm Aaron down as Aaron wrapped the strap of his binoculars around his own neck and pulled until I thought he might pop his own head off. So, Manny wouldn’t have to hang him by his binocular strap since Aaron was apparently trying to do that all by himself.

Dropping the treasure box at my feet, I ran, dragging Whiskers behind me even as she yowled indignantly. Oh my gosh, this was not good. Maybe Aaron was having a raging fit because he’d lost that Ashy thing that he’d promised Manny.

Weirder things had happened, though I was having a hard time pulling anything up at the moment as my breath sawed in and out of my lungs. Running was not one of my strong suits. Beyond that, I also didn’t want to hurt Whiskers in the process, and she darted away from me every time I tried to snatch her up. But I hoofed it as best I could over a small rise and up to the pair standing just outside the tree line.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

Treats, sleeping, and causing chaos in the house. What more could I ask for?

MOL (meow out loud). I like that, Whiskers.

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I don’t talk out loud but in my head there are a ton of comments on everything I see and do!

I recently started sharing my thoughts with my readers. It’s lots of fun. Of claws, my human characters are kept unawares.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Play it for all it’s worth! I love every second of being with my people and infiltrating scenes that Gabby might not have originally wanted me in. It’s the best.

Sneaky Interviews Duke, the Labrador Retriever from Charleston Conundrum by Stacy Wilder

Meow, there, Mr. Dog.  What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Duke. I’m a six-year-old Labrador retriever. My author is writing under the pen name Stacy Wilder.

Pawsome to meet you both.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

So far, I’ve appeared in one book, a cozy mystery, Charleston Conundrum, set in Charleston, South Carolina. The book is about a Private Investigator, Liz Adams, whose best friend, Peg, is murdered. Liz winds up being one of the prime suspects. I help her solve the case.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

I am in a series. In the next book, Carmel Conundrum, Liz and I travel to Carmel, California. After Carmel, the author has rough outlines for two more books in the series. No telling where we our next adventure will be after that.

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

My author and her husband have always owned black Labrador retrievers. Their current Lab, Eve, is the most communicative. She howls the words, “I love you,” for her breakfast in the mornings. My communication super power was modeled after Eve. My author says it’s a good thing Eve can’t detect when people are lying like I can.

You lucky dog, you.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Two cops stood on my front doorstep. I recognized the female, Megan, from a previous case that I’d worked on. I pegged the young male standing behind her as a rookie. His badge was shiny, and he was grinning from ear to ear.

“Do you have more information about Peg? Please, come in. Duke’s friendly.”

Megan declined for both of them. “It’s too early to release any additional information, but we’re definitely ruling it a homicide. We’re here to remind you that this is our investigation. And to notify you that Sam said you shouldn’t leave the state. Understood?”

What? Were they listening in on my phone conversation with Liam? “OK … am I a suspect?” I asked puzzled.

“No comment. Just keep out of it and let us do our job.”

No way. “Of course,” I replied. Better for me if Sam thought I was cooperating. Duke yipped in the background.

Someone once told me that all dogs have super powers. Duke’s was communication. He whined when something was up. He yipped when someone wasn’t telling the truth. He even howled the words “I love you.” His superpowers often came in handy. Of course, it wasn’t too handy when you were the one doing the lying.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I love it when Liz cooks, and she shares with me. Oh, and I like treats, lots of treats. Her love interest, Brad, brings me a couple of rawhides. Hanging out with the pug next door is fun, too.

Like I said, you’re a lucky dog.

I talk dog talk. Liz knows exactly what I mean.

It’s great your human character understands me. The same with Alicia, although readers and the other pet characters can now understand me, too.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

You can’t just sit around and look pretty, or in my case, handsome. If you’re going to be in a book, you have to earn your keep.

Sneaky Interviews Frank from Shifting and Shenanigans, the first Magical Book Club Cozy Mystery, by Elizabeth Pantley

Meow there, Kitty. Please introduce yourself and your author.

Hello Sneaky! Thanks for having me today. I’m a chocolate-point Siamese cat, the finest cat breed, I must say. I know you agree with me, Sneaky! How about a fist bump, or should I say paw-bump?

Here you, go. (paw bump). Great to have a fellow Siamese guy on my blog.

The name’s Franklin, like one of our great presidents. My friends call me Frank. Like a delicious meat product, or the concept of honest and sincerity. All of which suit me fine.

My author, Elizabeth Pantley, introduces me to the world in Shifting and Shenanigans. The first book in the Magical Mystery Book Club series. I’m the main character, of course, due to my brilliance, my wit, my beauty, and my overall delightful personality. I can be adorable, too, when I need to be. Meow.

 So mice to have you here, Frank. I’ve had your author’s other cats from another series for interviews and my author has featured many of your author’s blog tours on her blog. She’s also read many of her books. She loves them and asked me to include her review of your book along with your interview. So please tell us about it.

In addition to this book, I’ll be the star of the series, so you’ll have the wonderful opportunity to share many adventures with me. This book, #1, Shifting and Shenanigans has just been released. Book #2, Vampires and Villains comes out in September. You’ll love it – we get to go on a Hawaiian cruise! Book #3, Cowboys and Chaos is set for November. I hope I get to ride a horse in that one!

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

That Elizabeth Pantley is a bit sentimental. She had a chocolate-point Siamese in her family when she was a girl. She’ll never forget that lovely pet, and so when she was deciding what cat should headline this enchanted book club series she naturally was drawn to the most enchanting breed.

Awww. Debbie had several Siamese as a child. More recently she had Oliver, a senior boy who passed away while she was writing the first book of her new series, The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady. Oliver is a star in that book, but although I don’t share his name, I was also based on him and continue his legacy in Debbie’s Cobble Cove series which also had a new release, Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery and Other Cobble Cove Stories. 

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

I thought you’d never ask! I’m in about a million great scenes, but he’s one to whet your whistle. It’s when the other main characters, okay fine, the two primary characters, Paige and Glo first arrive at the enchanted library and meet yours truly.

“Why the confusion?” The sleek Siamese jumped back up on the chair and tilted his head at us. “Pffft. It’s like you’ve never heard a talking cat before.”

We continued to stare at him.

“Cat got your tongue?” He guffawed and snorted.

“Are you really a talking cat?” I asked as I walked a circle around the chair inspecting the area.

“Whatcha’ lookin’ for?” the cat said.

“I am looking for a hidden person, or a tape recorder – or something to explain how that voice appears to be coming out of your mouth.”

“Uh, Paige,” said Glo. “I think the voice is coming out of his mouth. I think it’s a talking cat.”

“You think?” gasped the cat. “You THINK! Honey, scoot yourself on over here and pay verrry close attention. Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?” Then he guffawed again at his parody of Chris Tucker’s voice and the famous line from the movie Rush Hour.

“Let’s say you really are talking—”

“Yeah. Let’s say that,” said the cat, flicking a whisker.

“How is it possible?” I asked.

“Uhm. You’re talking. How is that possible?”

I decided to skip to the next question. “Were you GeeGee’s cat?”

“It’s complicated. You could say I come with the library. I suppose that would make me your cat now, in a manner of speaking, or perhaps you’re my people.” He chuckled.

“What’s your name?” asked Glo.

I turned to her. “Are you just skipping over the logical details and jumping right into hey, there talking cat, what’s your name?”

“At least one of you has some manners,” mumbled the cat. “Allow me to introduce myself. The name’s Frank.”

Wow, Meow! What a great actor you are, Frank, and what a great writer your author is.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

 Are you kidding?! I get to go inside cozy mysteries and solve the murder case. Can you say the most fun ever?

 I love that part, too. Better than catnip.

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

 Puh-leeze! This boy can’t be held down. Talk I must!

I’ve begun to talk, too, in the last full-length Cobble Cove book, No Gravestone Unturned, and in my latest story collection that I mentioned earlier. Although I speak, the human characters don’t know what I’m saying, only the readers and my fellow pet sleuths.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Hmm. I would say make certain that your author understands the importance of putting a cat up front and center. We belong on the cover, right Sneaky? And we deserve the spotlight – lots of great scenes!

You are so right, Frank. I had to convince Debbie to ask her publisher to do that on our 3rd book, Written in Stone, and our new release.

Shifting and Shenanigans is the first book of the Magical Mystery Book Club. Having read several of the authors books from her Destiny Falls Mystery and Magic series, I was expecting nothing less than a fantastic read and wasn’t disappointed.

In this first book, Paige inherits the Snapdragon Inn from her great grandmother along with her Aunt Gloria (known as Glo). Gee Gee leaves a letter for them that states they are in charge of the secret library that is located in the house.

After moving in and finding the library, they learn its secrets that include a talking cat named Frank who tells them they must form a book club of eight members. When they agree to do this and six other people join them, they prepare for their first book club read by choosing one of the mystery books in the library. The books themselves hold a greater mystery.

Without sharing any spoilers, I’ll say that book lovers will love reading this book and that the title will make more sense as you get further into the story. Like Pantley’s other series, it’s a loads of fun, with quirky characters, magic, and several twists. I can’t wait to read the next which is previewed at the end.
