Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned cacher, you’ll enjoy discovering hidden treasures and appreciating the great outdoors alongside fellow adventurers. Would you like to not only learn about geocaching but also discover what nano, micro, and regular cache sizes are? Have you ever wished to explore George Genereux Urban Regional Park? Come out with this group, and have fun geocaching!

In the afternoon, make your way to GCAYH9A Sears Park CITO (Cache In, Trash Out) Event at Herbert S. Sears Park from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. This event is not just about finding caches; it’s also an opportunity to give back to the environment. Join the Saskatoon geocaching community in cleaning up the park while enjoying the thrill of the hunt. It’s a wonderful way to make new friends and contribute to the beauty of your local area.

CNC YXE City Nature Challenge results

With boundless gratitude and enthusiasm, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas extend a colossal thank you to all participants, supporters, collaborators, and sponsors who made the Saskatoon CNC YXE City Nature Challenge 2024 a resounding success! In a remarkable display of community spirit and nature appreciation, Saskatoon embraced the call to become biodiversity ambassadors, igniting a passion for citizen science that reverberated throughout our city and beyond.

From April 26 to April 29, 2024, Saskatoon’s neighborhoods, parks, and green spaces buzzed with activity as individuals of all ages and backgrounds united to document the astonishing array of flora and fauna thriving in our midst. Through the user-friendly iNaturalist app, residents unleashed the power of citizen science, contributing invaluable data to illuminate the heartbeat of Saskatoon’s biodiversity.

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors—the Saskatoon Nature Society, SaskTel, and SaskPower—for their generous support, which empowered us to engage the public and champion the cause of conservation. Special recognition goes to Jerin, whose unwavering dedication exemplifies the transformative impact of individual action in safeguarding our natural heritage.

Thanks to all the organizers at the International Level there were California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) and nationwide across Canada was the Canadian Wildlife Federation, then locally in Saskatoon was Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas.

As we eagerly anticipate the results of this year’s challenge, we invite everyone to mark their calendars for April 2025, when we will reconvene for another exhilarating exploration of Saskatoon’s wild wonders. Together, we have demonstrated the power of collective action in nurturing a more sustainable, biodiverse future for generations to come.

In addition to the remarkable individual contributions, we are thrilled to highlight the active involvement of eight classrooms from four schools in Saskatoon. 200 students were immersed in the great outdoors, embarking on the Enchanted Forest Exploration: Discovering Wildlife and Wonders. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of nature but also fostered a profound connection to the natural world, inspiring future stewards of the environment.

Furthermore, our community came together for four unforgettable events. These gatherings provided participants with the opportunity to unite, exchange stories, and delve into the wonders of the wilderness. Through shared experiences and meaningful conversations, we forged bonds that will endure beyond the confines of this challenge.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the educators, students, participants, sponsors, collaborators, supporters and event attendees whose enthusiasm and dedication enriched the Saskatoon CNC YXE City Nature Challenge 2024 experience. Together, we have cultivated a culture of curiosity, exploration, and conservation that will continue to thrive in Saskatoon for years to come. Logistics:

Date and Time: NOTE This event has been moved to MARCH 30 2024. If there is 3-5 inches of snow, we can go ahead on this new date. January’s date was amid the polar vortex and way too cold.

Afternoon 1:30 – ending about 4:00 to 4:30 pm

Location: Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area

Registration: Pre-register on Eventbrite to secure your spot for this enchanting experience.

Attire: Bundle up in warm clothes, hats, and mittens to fully embrace the winter magic.

🐕❄️ By the Way Volunteers wanted to man the first-come-first-served sign-up table and kick off this icy extravaganza! Email now🎉✨you’ll be the friendly face welcoming participants, assisting with registrations, and ensuring a smooth start to their thrilling arctic adventure. Your enthusiasm and organization will help create a paw-sitively unforgettable experience for both humans and their furry companions!

Meetup Location: Arrive west of the SW OLRA, and park in the SW OLRA parking lot. Directions provided, along with a map.

Helpful Information: No food or drink allowed in the kennel area. The trail is 2 km long (approx. 10 minutes). Sled-drawn rides require three to five inches of snow. In case of insufficient snow, a notice will be placed on Eventbrite, social media, and on-site.

⚠️ Restrictions:

Children under 3 must be accompanied by an adult.

No more than 250 lbs in the sled at once.

Note: There are no washroom facilities at the afforestation area.

NOTE: Sled-drawn rides require three to five inches of snow. In case of insufficient snow, a notice will be placed on Eventbrite, social media, and on-site, and the event will turn into a heritage forest walking tour!

From August 3rd to 7th, join thousands of individuals, from beginners to seasoned bioblitzers, in an exciting quest to explore and document the incredible species diversity in these remarkable natural spaces. The BioBlitz presents a unique opportunity to connect with nature while contributing to the protection of the species we hold dear.

The Success of City Nature Challenge CNCYXE2023 Saskatoon and Area: Unique Sightings and the Importance of Citizen Science

The City Nature Challenge is a global event that encourages people to explore and document nature in their local areas. Between April 28 – May 1, 2023, Saskatoon and the surrounding area participated in the challenge, and the results were impressive. Even in these very early spring months there were 831 observations, a whopping 246 species discovered, 116 identifiers, and 37 committed observers, the City Nature Challenge in Saskatoon was a success.

The challenge provided a platform for citizens to participate in citizen science, and document unique sightings. Kathlin in the Saskatoon area documented some exciting bird finds during this mass migration season, but her favourite was a Great Blue Heron eating a rodent. This sighting was pretty spectacular, and it was exciting to spot the heron through the reeds.

An American mink was another exciting visitor in the neighbourhood of Sutherland, Saskatoon. This semi-aquatic animal is an unusual sight in the city, and it was a great find for those who spotted it.

The challenge also helped document species that are at risk or vulnerable. The Horned Grebe is a species at risk in Canada due to habitat loss and degradation. Prairie Violet or crowfoot violet is vulnerable and thought to grow in only about 100 places in the entire province of Saskatchewan. The Gray Comma butterfly, listed as common on the Saskatoon Nature Society’s published checklist, was confirmed for the first time on iNaturalist.

Sara mentioned that the challenge also helped to document the presence of rare or hard-to-find species, such as the Togwotee Harvestman and the Whirligig beetle. The Hydrobius fuscipes, a species never before recorded in the Saskatoon area on iNaturalist, was observed three times during the challenge. Whirlgig beetles are hard to photograph, and this is a rare observation of one just chilling! It is also the very first research grade observation of the genus in the saskatoon area on iNaturalist.!

In addition to the unique sightings, the City Nature Challenge in Saskatoon also highlighted the importance of early detection and rapid response to invasive species. The Common Buckthorn was found, and this invasive species requires early detection and rapid response activities. It is a noxious weed, a hazard to other trees “a tree killer”, and a menace to oat crops.

Finally, the challenge also highlighted the vulnerability of some species to pollution and human activity. The American White Pelican is at the top of the aquatic food chain, making it vulnerable to biomagnification and bioaccumulation of pollutants. The Goldenrod Gall Fly, Lily Leaf Beetle, Common Grackle, Canada Wild Rye, and Green Ash are also at risk due to factors such as habitat loss, population reduction, and invasive species.

The success of the City Nature Challenge in Saskatoon and the surrounding area is a testament to the power of citizen science and community engagement. Through participation in events like this, citizens can make meaningful contributions to scientific research and help protect the natural world around them.

In addition to the unique sightings and discoveries made during the City Nature Challenge CNCYXE2023 Saskatoon and Area, we would like to express our appreciation for the many naturalists who came out and added to the conversation about biodiversity.

Their passion and dedication to nature were evident in the many observations they made, the insights they shared, and the enthusiasm they displayed. It is through their efforts that we were able to achieve such great success during this year’s challenge.

One of the great things about the City Nature Challenge is that it encourages people to get outside and explore the natural world around them. It is through this exploration that we gain a greater appreciation for the complexity and beauty of our local ecosystems.

We were fortunate to have many experienced naturalists, nature enthusiasts and biologists participate in this year’s challenge, and their expertise and insights were invaluable in helping us identify and understand the many species we observed.

But we were also thrilled to see so many new nature enthusiasts join the challenge, many of whom were able to discover and document species they had never seen before. This is exactly the kind of engagement we hope to inspire through events like the City Nature Challenge.

So to all of the naturalists – just starting out, and experienced- who participated in this year’s challenge, we extend our deepest appreciation and thanks. Your efforts have not only contributed to our understanding of local biodiversity but have also inspired a new generation of nature enthusiasts to get out and explore the natural world. We look forward to seeing what we can discover together in the years to come.

Are you ready to embark on an exciting adventure to explore and discover the wonders of nature right in your own backyard? The Saskatoon and Area iNaturalist City Nature Challenge is here, and you’re invited to be a part of it! This annual event, taking place from April 28 to May 1, 2023, is a global citizen science initiative that encourages people to get outside, observe and document the biodiversity around them, and contribute valuable data to scientific research. And the best part? Anyone can participate, regardless of whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or new to nature observation!

In today’s busy world, finding time to connect with nature can be challenging. Many of us are caught up in work, school, and other responsibilities. But the City Nature Challenge offers a fun and accessible way to discover the beauty of the natural world, right where you are. You don’t have to go to a national park or a remote wilderness area to participate. You can search for nature in your own neighborhood, your local park, or even your own backyard!

So how can you get involved in the City Nature Challenge? It’s simple! All you need is a smartphone, and a free account on the iNaturalist app (in the field recordings) or website. The iNaturalist platform allows you to easily document and share your observations of plants, animals, fungi, and other living organisms, and contribute to a global database of biodiversity records. You can also join or view the progress of the Saskatoon and Area iNaturalist project, specifically created for the City Nature Challenge, to connect with other local nature enthusiasts and see what they’ve found.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry! The City Nature Challenge provides helpful resources to help you get going. You can download a PDF with hints and tips for searching for nature around your home, or watch a fungi-specific YouTube if you’re interested in exploring the fascinating world of mushrooms and other fungi. The City Nature Challenge is also a great opportunity to learn from experts and fellow participants through guided walks, workshops, and other events organized by local nature organizations.

As you embark on your nature adventure, keep your eyes and ears open for the birds that are returning to Saskatoon and its surrounding areas. Will you spot meadowlarks, robins, blue jays, or black-capped chickadees doing their two-note spring territory calls? And don’t forget about insects! As Greg says, “Bugs rule the numbers game!” Look out for flies, butterflies, boxelder bugs, ladybugs (also known as lady beetles), cocoons, ants, and other fascinating insects that may catch your eye. Remember to leave no stone unturned! Check on top of branches and stones for lichens, conks, or shelf fungi. Peek into the bark of trees, or into the cracks of fences – you never know what hidden treasures you might find!

The City Nature Challenge is not only about discovering the beauty of nature, but also about contributing to important scientific research. Your observations can help researchers and conservationists better understand and protect local biodiversity, monitor changes in populations, and make informed conservation decisions. By participating in the City Nature Challenge, you become a citizen scientist, making a meaningful contribution to our understanding of the natural world.

And don’t forget to have fun! The City Nature Challenge is a great opportunity to connect with nature, explore your surroundings, and learn something new. There is no mood or passion that the forest cannot give us, and those of us who have discovered her secret can settle beforehand what our experiences are going to be. We can choose our day and select our hour. And lo! the dawn finds us in the obscure wood. Together witnessing the film expose the afforestation secrets, we pass through into the realm of legend. With pity or with joy, the secrets revealed, behold the stories and tales of another world, another time. Let us at least suppose so for the moment—that at the film -we settle down to discovering the real intention and the stories of the afforestation areas. Those stories which etch and mould the form of the afforestation areas.

National Forest Week brings attention to our forests and trees from coast to coast across Canada. Our forests and trees provide habitats for wildlife, insects, polllinator species, birds and so much more! What is the ‘triple environmental emergency we are facing?

1. Loss of biodiversity
2. Climate change
3. Out of control pollution.

Our native biodiversity needs wild spaces, food and homes such as trees and forests provide in which to thrive. Forests, tree planting, and forest conservation initiatives are nature-based solutions towards climate action. Pollution, pesticides, herbicides are escalating the extinction events. Creating safe, organic forest spaces is a large step to halt and slow down the silent sixth mass extinction event of invertebrates, the planet’s bird food on wings. Ornithologists and botanists have noticed that the songbird, and raptor populations have declined by a staggering 48%. The monitored wildlife populations are reduced by a catastrophic 68%. A loss of forests and habitats have caused over 2/3 of our animal populations to totally disappear.

Richard St. Barbe Baker said it this way, “If a person loses one third of his or her skin, the person will die; if a tree loses a third of its bark, the tree will die, and if the world loses a third of its trees, the world will die.
We live less that five minutes without air and the trees give us air we breathe. We live less than five days without water, and trees are absolutely essential in the water cycle. We live less than five weeks without food, and without the trees we could not grow food.” (Filson, Bruce K. October 7, 1982, Western People, p. 5)
