Nurturing Nature: The Vision and Achievements of Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas

As a dedicated non-profit Canadian registered charity, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas (FSAAI) passionately work to promote and preserve the natural beauty of the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park. Our mission centers around advancing educational and interpretive programs that nurture both current and future stewards of these vital natural spaces.

Our Mission

At (FSAAI), we believe that fostering a deep appreciation for our diverse ecosystems is essential for their preservation. Through research, program development, workshops, and events, we aim to enhance the experience of park visitors, creating lasting connections between people and nature.

Progress and Achievements

Over the past year, our initiatives have flourished, leading to significant advancements in community engagement and environmental stewardship:

  • City Nature Challenge: This event successfully engaged the community in documenting local biodiversity, highlighting the richness of our urban ecosystems across Saskatoon. Supporting the environmental stewardship. Rapid detection early response to invasive species. You can’t protect what you don’t know regarding species at risk.
  • Jane’s Walk: We encouraged exploration of our urban landscapes, fostering a deeper appreciation for the unique blend of nature and city life. Learning, and appreciating the complex work undertaken by the City of Saskatoon in urban planning and environmental sustainability and supporting efforts being undertaken
  • Arbor Week & National Forest Week: These celebrations advocated for the importance of trees and forests, emphasizing their role in enhancing urban life and continuing the Richard St. Barbe Baker pledge with Forest Guides and Forest Scouts everywhere.
  • ParticipACTION Challenge: By promoting active lifestyles echoing Olympic Champion George Genereux, we encouraged outdoor engagement, connecting citizens with their natural surroundings. Come to Nature, Come to Life!

Our commitment to these programs is made possible through the generous contributions of donors, grants, and volunteers. Every effort counts, and we are grateful for the ongoing support from our community and corporate partners.

Advocacy for Sustainability

Advocacy is at the heart of our mission. It facilitates collaboration between community organizations, government agencies, and businesses, allowing us to implement effective conservation strategies. Our advocacy efforts focus on promoting sustainable practices that minimize negative impacts on our environment, ensuring that the afforestation areas remain vibrant and accessible for all.

We highlight the cultural and recreational value of these green spaces, fostering a sense of pride and connection among citizens. Through educational outreach, we raise awareness about the significance of biodiversity conservation, influencing policy decisions at local, regional, and national levels.

Focus Areas for Future Initiatives

As we look ahead, our focus will be on several key areas:

  1. Native Ecosystem Education: Enhancing awareness of the ecological significance of native flora and fauna, particularly species at risk, by targeting various stakeholders including naturalists, walkers, and municipal policymakers.
  2. Preserving and Restoring Nature’s Diversity: Advocating strategic conservation approaches that ensure healthy populations of native species and ecosystems.
  3. Sustainable Land Utilization: Supporting practices that positively affect biodiversity and combat climate change.
  4. Diversity and Inclusion: Engaging equity-deserving groups in our initiatives, recognizing and addressing barriers faced by various communities, and fostering an inclusive environment for all.

Get Involved

We invite everyone to explore the afforestation areas and join us in our mission. Whether through membership, volunteering, or simply visiting, your involvement makes a tangible difference. We also encourage support for our sponsors who play a vital role in our success.

Beyond Boundaries: Creating Inclusive Outdoor Spaces

As advocates for equitable access to nature and outdoor spaces, we are excited to share information about the upcoming third annual Canadian Congress on Disability Inclusion (CCDI), which will take place on May 23, 2024. 10:30 am ET to 5:20 ET (8:30 am CST to 3:20 pm CST Saskatoon) This event presents a unique opportunity to discuss accessibility and inclusion for all individuals, including those with disabilities. Please register here: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/campaigns/canadian-congress-disability-inclusion.html.

At Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, we believe that everyone in Saskatoon should have access to quality health and wellness opportunities in outdoor settings that help them grow and thrive—physically, emotionally, and socially. We are proud of everyone who promotes and delivers health, wellness, and physical activity opportunities throughout Saskatoon to equity-deserving groups, including Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, persons with varying abilities, low-income populations, and newcomers to Canada.

It’s crucial to recognize that accessibility to nature and outdoor environments is not just a luxury but a fundamental human right. Unfortunately, many individuals, such as those with varying abilities, face barriers to accessing green spaces and enjoying the benefits of nature. For example, someone who became a paraplegic due to polio for the last 71 years should not be deprived of the opportunity to experience the beauty of forests and other natural landscapes and be confined to a life amid only greyscapes. Everyone deserves access to grasslands, wetlands, and forests, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.

The CCDI provides a platform to address these important issues and work towards creating more inclusive and accessible communities and workplaces across Canada. This virtual event is free and open to the public, offering panel discussions, insights from thought leaders, and opportunities for collaboration.

We encourage you to join us at the CCDI on May 23, 2024, via Zoom or dial-in option. Registration is now open on CCDI’s website, where you can also find more information about the event and its objectives.

Together, let’s strive to build a more inclusive and accessible society where everyone can fully participate and enjoy the benefits of nature.

Black Histories and Futures Month

Elevating Black Voices in Saskatoon: The Intersection of Black History and Climate Action

February is Black Histories and Futures Month, a time to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of Black people to society. In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and the surrounding area, this month presents an opportunity to explore the intersection of Black history with sustainability, the UN SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, Life on Land, and climate action.

Black voices and leaders within the climate movement have been speaking out about environmental racism and the disproportionate impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on Black and equity-deserving communities. Saskatoon, with its diverse population, is no exception. Organizations like Black Lives Matter YXE are advocating for environmental justice and addressing the impacts of climate change on Black communities.

Black entrepreneurs and innovators have also been pioneers in developing solutions to combat climate change and promote greater equity and resilience. In Saskatoon, there are many Black-owned businesses and organizations that are working towards sustainability and climate action. For example, Black-owned urban farms are addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Saskatoon’s Black Histories and Futures Month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the contributions of Black people to sustainability and climate action. By recognizing the intersectionality of these issues, we can work towards a more just and equitable future for all.

Charity’s Song: Harmony Unleashed

International Day of Charity
5 September

On International Day of Charity, let us embrace,
The power of compassion, love’s eternal grace.
Like volunteerism and philanthropy’s flame,
Charity binds us, forging a resilient frame.

Inclusive societies, where social bonds are strong,
Aiding the marginalized, righting the world’s wrong.
Charity, a balm to ease humanitarian strife,
Supplementing healthcare, education, and life.

In the six critical areas, let’s find our way,
People, planet, prosperity, peace, partnership we say.
Through charity’s lens, we mend the fabric torn,
Advocating justice, a brighter future born.

But let us not forget the natural world’s plea,
Forests, wetlands, and trees, where life’s symphony.
They offer solace, wellness, a sanctuary divine,
Physical and mental health, gifts that intertwine.

Let’s foster equity, break barriers with might,
For equity-deserving groups, share nature’s light.
Persons with disabilities, their spirits lift high,
Indigenous peoples, their heritage nigh.

Racialized communities, inclusion our guide,
LGBTQI2S+ voices, never silenced nor denied.
Immigrants, refugees, language no divide,
Low-income households, their burdens we’ll stride.

Youth, the future’s torchbearers, we’ll inspire,
Seniors, wisdom’s custodians, their hearts we’ll admire.
Persons with mental illness, their burdens we’ll share,
Victims of violence, healing love we declare.

And those with low literacy, knowledge we’ll impart,
Together, we’ll build bridges, compassion our art.
For these equity-deserving souls, we’ll pave the way,
So they too can embrace green spaces and sway.

In 192 hectares, a haven we’ll create,
Where nature’s embrace becomes their rightful fate.
The Red-Berried Elder, imperiled yet strong,
The Green Ash, a guardian against extinction’s throng.

American Elm, holding stories of the past,
In these afforestation areas, their legacies vast.
Turkey Vultures soaring high, their plight we’ll mend,
Northern Small Yellow Lady’s Slipper, we’ll defend.

Western Yellowjacket, its place we’ll restore,
Goldenrod Gall Fly, conservation’s core.
Woodland Skipper, a fragile dance in the wild,
Silver-spotted Skipper, we’ll keep its spirit mild.

American White Pelican, a symbol of grace,
Canada Warbler, a melodious embrace.
Semipalmated Sandpiper, its flight we’ll preserve,
Pine Grosbeak, its vibrant hues we’ll forever serve.

Barred Tiger Salamander, endangered and rare,
Horned Grebe, we’ll show them we care.
Bank Swallow, threatened in its abode,
Baird’s Sparrow, its song we’ll help explode.

Grasshopper Sparrow, its melodies we’ll cherish,
Western Grebe, its beauty shall never perish.
Bobolink, their song we’ll forever hear,
Red-necked Phalarope, its elegance dear.

Lesser Yellowlegs, we’ll shield it from harm,
And the Whooping Crane, its majesty warm.
These treasures we’ll protect, our heritage’s delight,
Through charity’s embrace, they shall never take flight.

Let the legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker endure,
B.T. Chappell, Bruce Gordon, a mission pure.
George Genereux, the Old Bone Trail’s tale we’ll proclaim,
Green Survival Program, a resounding eco-flame.

The Green Belt initiative, nature’s guardian role,
Man-made forests, the prairies’ afforestation goal.
Yorath Island Glacial Spillway, a sanctuary to thrive,
Charity joins hands, their legacies alive.

On this day, let charity’s anthem resound,
A symphony of kindness, compassion unbound.
In harmony’s embrace, we build a world anew,
Charity’s song, our pledge, forever true.
