Black Histories and Futures Month

Elevating Black Voices in Saskatoon: The Intersection of Black History and Climate Action

February is Black Histories and Futures Month, a time to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of Black people to society. In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and the surrounding area, this month presents an opportunity to explore the intersection of Black history with sustainability, the UN SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, Life on Land, and climate action.

Black voices and leaders within the climate movement have been speaking out about environmental racism and the disproportionate impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on Black and equity-deserving communities. Saskatoon, with its diverse population, is no exception. Organizations like Black Lives Matter YXE are advocating for environmental justice and addressing the impacts of climate change on Black communities.

Black entrepreneurs and innovators have also been pioneers in developing solutions to combat climate change and promote greater equity and resilience. In Saskatoon, there are many Black-owned businesses and organizations that are working towards sustainability and climate action. For example, Black-owned urban farms are addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Saskatoon’s Black Histories and Futures Month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the contributions of Black people to sustainability and climate action. By recognizing the intersectionality of these issues, we can work towards a more just and equitable future for all.

Jax’s Story: A Tale of Rescue and Love

Jax was abandoned at Avalon Dog Park in Saskatoon, left to fend for herself in the bitterly cold February weather. Luckily, two kind ladies noticed her and called the SPCA to pick her up. When Jax’s new owners came to pick her up, they had a chance meeting with these two ladies. They had a feeling it was Jax when they saw her distinct appearance, and the SPCA soon confirmed that she was a rescue dog from New Hope Rescue.

When Jax’s new family adopted her, they knew very little about her history. Adoption agencies typically provide minimal information about the pets they place, but Jax’s foster family provided invaluable insight into her personality and quirks. They had even bought her a treat ball that she still treasures to this day!

Jax’s foster family also gave her a bath, an experience that left quite an impression on both Jax and her new family. Now, whenever Jax wants a bath, she’ll sit by the shower and let her humans know. It’s one of many ways that Jax has shown her new family just how much she trusts and loves them.

Foster families like Jax’s are an essential part of the rescue process, providing temporary homes and love to pets in need. It’s not always easy to say goodbye when it’s time for the pet to be adopted, but it’s a vital part of the work they do. As Jax’s new family can attest, it takes a special kind of person to be a foster parent, and they are incredibly grateful for the role that Jax’s foster family played in bringing her into their lives.

For Jax’s new family, it’s clear that the love and companionship that Jax brings into their lives is priceless. As they say, “I may have rescued Jax, but equally I think she rescued me.” There’s no denying the unconditional love and joy that pets like Jax bring into our lives, and we are all the better for it.

United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

Mother Nature: A wellspring of restoration. David Suzuki Foundation

Each of us has the ability to act powerfully for change; together we can restore that ancient and sustaining harmony. David Suzuki

Just walk and see

The pleasure of going for a walk in a comfortable sweater, knowing it will keep you warm every time, is enough to be happy.  Just walk, and see, walk beyond where you have been before.  Explore new sights and sounds.  There is a whole world out there waiting as you find a new route.  Don’t go anywhere, don’t anticipate the destination, just follow your feet.  For as Friedrich Nietzsche says, “all truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.”

National Sweater Day has traditionally fallen on the first Thursday of February, which in 2018 falls on February 1

Host an event for National Sweater Day to help WWF-Canada {WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature (also known as World Wildlife Fund) } protect wildlife and habitats in Canada and beyond.

Locally steps have been taken to protect the wildlife corridor in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area by city council in 1972.

“He could tell by the way animals walked that they were keeping time to some kind of music. Maybe it was the song in their own hearts that they walked to.” Laura Adams Armer

Today due to the rather chilly weather, it may be hard to walk in only sweater without further layers, and it may also be challenging to hear birds sing as they snuggle down awaiting the cold snap to pass ~ a method employed to conserve energy.  However here is a beautiful ode by Percy Bysshe Shelley

Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!

Bird thou never wert,
That from Heaven, or near it,
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art.
Higher still and higher
From the earth thou springest
Like a cloud of fire;
The blue deep thou wingest,
And singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest.

“St. Barbe’s unique capacity to pass on his enthusiasm to others. . . Many foresters all over the world found their vocations as a result of hearing ‘The Man of the Trees’ speak. I certainly did, but his impact has been much wider than that. Through his global lecture tours, St. Barbe has made millions of people aware of the importance of trees and forests to our planet.” Allan Grainger

“If you seek creative ideas go walking.
Angels whisper to a man when he goes for
a walk.” Raymond I. Myers.
