Embracing Truth and Reconciliation: A Call to Action on September 30

As we approach September 30, a significant day in our calendar, we reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which coincides with Orange Shirt Day. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of residential schools and the ongoing journey towards healing and understanding within Indigenous communities. It also offers us a unique opportunity to explore deeper ecological connections and recognize the inherent value of our natural world.

The philosophy of deep ecology, articulated by Arne Næss, urges us to rethink our relationship with nature—not merely as a resource for human use but as a community of living beings with their own rights. This perspective aligns closely with Indigenous worldviews, particularly the Cree concept of nîhiyaw tâpisinowin, which emphasizes holistic balance and interconnectedness. The word “nehiyaw” can be deconstructed to reveal its roots: “nîwo,” meaning “four,” and “–iyaw” or “miyaw,” meaning “body.” This translates to “People of the four body,” reflecting the sacred significance of the number four and its metaphorical representation of the physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional dimensions of life.

In the Cree worldview, these four dimensions underscore the importance of holistic balance, reminding us that ecological knowledge is inseparable from spiritual and cosmological beliefs. This holistic understanding fosters reciprocal relationships among humans, land, animals, and spirits, highlighting our place within a “community of beings.” Such beliefs encourage us to engage with the natural world in a respectful and sustainable manner. Deep ecology also offers a perspective that prioritizes the well-being of the Earth and all its inhabitants, focusing on ecological systems as a whole, and eco-centric view, rather than placing humans at the center of importance the anthropocentric viewpoint.

Organizations like Perth City Farm, founded by Rosanne and Thomas Scott, exemplify this interconnectedness of spirituality and environmental activism. Their work emphasizes planting native trees and promoting biodiversity, creating spaces that honor both ecological integrity and cultural heritage. Rosanne’s insights, one of many environmentalists, influenced by Richard St. Barbe Baker, reflect the vital link between spirituality and ecological stewardship. She articulates how her own multicultural background informs her connection to nature, urging us to recognize how diverse spiritualities can enrich our environmental efforts.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, let us not only wear orange to honor the stories of those affected by residential schools but also to commit ourselves to a deeper understanding of our shared responsibilities. By advocating for the protection of our ecosystems and planting native species, we can help restore the balance that has been disrupted by invasive plants like Smooth Brome.

We must engage in conversations that encompass the physical, relational, and spiritual dimensions of our lives. By acknowledging the sacredness of the land and the interconnectedness of all life, we can foster a more inclusive dialogue about environmental sustainability. This involves creating spaces for Indigenous voices to be heard and respected, allowing their traditional ecological knowledge to guide our collective actions.

As we gather in reflection and action on September 30, let us embrace the principles of deep ecology and the nîhiyaw philosophy. Let us envision a future where our relationship with nature is not only about conservation but also about reverence. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future that honors both the land and the legacy of those who have come before us.

Join us in wearing orange and taking tangible steps toward reconciliation and ecological restoration. Let this day be a reminder that healing and sustainability go hand in hand, and together, we can cultivate a more just and harmonious world.

Reflect upon:

How do the terms and concepts within the Cree language reflect the interconnectedness of humans, nature, and spirituality in traditional Cree culture?

In what ways can understanding the concept of “nîhiyaw tâpisinowin” deepen our appreciation for the holistic approaches in Cree ecological knowledge and environmental stewardship?

How do cultural practices and ceremonies within Cree communities demonstrate the significance of language in preserving traditional ecological knowledge?

What role does the number four play in Cree spirituality and philosophy, and how can this understanding influence modern environmental practices?

How can we integrate Cree language and concepts into contemporary discussions on sustainability to honor and support traditional knowledge systems?

The Green Dance from Saskatoon to Nairobi

“In the Spirit of Wangari Maathai and Richard St. Barbe Baker”

In the vibrant heart of Saskatoon, where the Dance of the Trees has found resonance, a new chapter unfolds in the legacy of environmental stewardship. Inspired by the indomitable spirits of Richard St. Barbe Baker and Wangari Maathai, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are set to embark on a journey from the prairies of Canada to the savannahs of Africa. The tale is one of afforestation, community, and the shared pursuit of rejuvenating our planet.

Introduction: A Dance Across Continents Richard St. Barbe Baker, a pioneering conservationist, and Wangari Maathai, the founder of the Green Belt Movement, shared a common vision—a vision that transcended borders and echoed across continents. As a tribute to St. Barbe Baker, who founded the International Tree Foundation and initiated the Dance of the Trees in Kenya, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas are sending Prince George, their Vice Chairman, to partake in the global environmental symphony at UNEA-6.

The Dance of the Trees: A Symphony of Hope Reports had reached Richard St. Barbe Baker’s ears, tales of tribes caught in the clutches of vanishing forests and encroaching deserts. In response, Baker journeyed to Kenya, immersing himself in the language and customs of the Kikuyu people. Through the Dance of the Trees, an ancient ritual born from collaboration with Chief Njonjo, lives were saved, and hope blossomed. Maathai, inspired by St. Barbe Baker’s efforts, later founded the Green Belt Movement, sowing millions of trees to combat desertification in Kenya.

Prince George: Nurturing Roots Beyond Borders Prince George, the Vice Chairman of the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, stands at the intersection of local sustainability and global impact. His journey to UNEA-6 in Nairobi is more than a personal odyssey; it’s a testament to the interconnectedness of environmental causes. The 474 acres in Saskatoon, dedicated to habitat restoration, native plants, and protection of endangered species, find common ground with the landscapes that once inspired St. Barbe Baker’s dance in Kenya.

UNEA-6: A Global Dance for Sustainability The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) is not merely a gathering; it’s a global dance for effective, inclusive, and sustainable actions against climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Prince George’s presence transcends personal development—it’s a moment for the Friends to showcase their commitment to sustainability, garner global recognition for the City of Saskatoon, and engage in transformative discussions on environmental stewardship.

Crowd Sourcing for a Harmonious Future: In the spirit of Wangari Maathai’s grassroots movements and Richard St. Barbe Baker’s tree-planting campaigns, the Friends turn to the community for support. The $4000 goal for Prince George’s journey to UNEA-6 becomes a call to action. Through bottle drives, and crowdfunding, the community can contribute to shaping environmental policies, championing regenerative sustainability, and fostering leadership skills in the youth.

Conclusion: A Green Horizon Unveiled As Prince George prepares to bear the logos of sponsors on his journey, he symbolizes the collective effort needed to craft policies, rejuvenate our planet, and ensure a harmonious dance with nature. The journey, though beyond the proposed budget, becomes a unique project—a Green Horizon initiative embodying the legacies of St. Barbe Baker and Maathai.

Campaigning for Sustainability: Unveiling Nature’s Symphony

Greetings, fellow stewards of the Earth,

As the wind whispers through the leaves and the rivers hum their gentle tunes, we gather here, inspired by the indomitable spirit of Wangari Maathai. Today, we invite you to join a movement echoing the harmonious dance of nature—a crowdfunding campaign to send the Vice Chairman of the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas to UNEA-6.

The Mission of Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas:

Our journey begins in the heart of Saskatoon, where the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, a grassroots environmental charity, have pledged to protect and educate. Founded in 2019, their mission extends beyond boundaries, aiming to create a demonstration site across 474 acres. This space will showcase habitat restoration, native plant installations, including a food forest, and the safeguarding of homes for over 60 at-risk species.

UNEA-6: A Gathering of Global Stewards:

The United Nations Environment Assembly, UNEA-6, stands as a testament to collective environmental consciousness. In the words of Wangari Maathai, “We cannot tire or give up. We owe it to the present and future generations of all species to rise up and walk!”

This assembly, scheduled in Nairobi, Kenya, from February 26 to March 1, 2024, bears the theme of effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions. It’s a call for united efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—a symphony of voices resonating for the planet.

Richard St. Barbe Baker: The Dance of the Trees:

As we delve into this narrative, we encounter the profound influence of Richard St. Barbe Baker, a global conservationist and the namesake of Saskatoon’s largest afforestation area. In the Dance of the Trees which took place in Kenya Africa, he founded the International Tree Foundation, leaving a legacy that echoes through time.

Youth Leadership and Regenerative Sustainability:

Central to this campaign is a student, the Vice Chairman, pursuing a master’s degree in sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan. His journey extends beyond personal growth, reaching towards collective impact. This endeavor is a call for youth leadership, networking, and a professional career in regenerative sustainability—a path aligned with Wangari Maathai’s belief that “In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace.”

Join the Symphony: Contribute for Change:

In the spirit of Wangari Maathai, we invite you to be a part of this symphony—a harmonious blend of nature’s advocates, youth leaders, and global stewards. Your contribution will resonate not only at UNEA-6 but in the hearts of those inspired by the Dance of the Trees and committed to regenerative sustainability.
