Celebrate National Health and Fitness Day on June 1 by joining the ParticipACTION Community Challenge! Saturday, June 1 is National Health and Fitness Day in Canada, and the kick-off of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk. Running from June 1 to 30, the challenge encourages everyone in Canada to get active throughout June, ultimately recognizing Canada’s Most Active Community and awarding it $100,000 to support local physical activity and sport initiatives. There will also be a prize for the most active community in each province and territory, and ParticipACTION will recognize and award organizations that are championing the challenge in their communities. To help remove barriers to people getting active, we encourage you to offer active opportunities on June 1 through open houses, free programming and more! Subheading: Prioritizing Canine Safety in Unpredictable Weather Conditions
Dear Dog Sledding Enthusiasts,
In the heart of every adventure lies a commitment to safety and responsibility. With this in mind, we regret to inform you that our highly anticipated dog sledding event, scheduled for Saturday, March 30, 2024, in the afternoon, has been canceled. Everyone tried so hard after the January 13 cancellation to make it happen, but again, the weather did not cooperate. This decision was made in consultation with our dedicated kennel mushers, who prioritize the safety and well-being of our four-legged companions above all else.
As much as we were eagerly looking forward to hitting the trails with our beloved canine team, recent weather conditions have posed unforeseen challenges. With warmer temperatures followed by freezing, the trails have become hazardous for our dogs to navigate. The layer of new snow atop the ice presents slippery conditions, potentially endangering the safety of our furry friends.
We understand the disappointment that accompanies the cancellation of an event we were all eagerly anticipating. However, our foremost concern is ensuring the safety and happiness of our canine companions. We hope for your understanding and support in this decision, as difficult as it may be.
Despite the cancellation, we invite you to join us at the afforestation area for a walking tour tomorrow afternoon. This presents a wonderful opportunity to still enjoy the outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. Your presence and support mean the world to us, and we would be delighted to share this experience with you.
Looking ahead to the spring season, we have an array of exciting events lined up for our community. From the City Nature Challenge in April to Jane’s Walks in May, and Arbor Week celebrations, there are ample opportunities for you to engage with and contribute to our cause. Harmony in Nature’s Heart: Chronicles of the Saskatoon Afforestation Fellowship
In the year 2024, a game-changing opportunity arose, promising to amplify the punch of every donation aimed at keeping things green. “Make It Monthly 2024” hit the streets, a bonus donation scheme where CanadaHelps tosses in an extra twenty bucks for every new monthly donation of twenty or more. This move was all about keeping the momentum going, making sure this charity sticks to their vision with stability and long-term game plans. One of the players in the mix was the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, a bunch of naturalists aiming to keep nature in the black in Saskatoon.

For these Friends, this was their bread and butter. With their hustle on the ground, they were all about sowing the seeds of tomorrow while keeping the locals happy. The “A Vision for a Sustainable Future GPS-PFG” gig was their main jam, focusing on a GPS Prairie Forest Guide (PFG) app that was meant to be the bomb, giving folks the lowdown on the local flora and fauna. It was all about connecting the dots between nature, traditional ecological knowledge, and playing it smart.
Another gig on the menu is the “Saskatoon City Nature Challenge CNCYXE2024,” getting folks to roll up their sleeves and pitch in on the biodiversity front through citizen science. It is all about getting out there and keeping tabs on the local critters and plants.
Then there is the “A forest of activity, a canopy of health, ParticipACTION Community Challenge,” giving the locals a kick in the pants to get outdoors and break a sweat. It is about health, happiness, and getting back in touch with what’s real.
Now, for those looking for some thrills, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas and some local sled dog mushers had a proposition: Frozen Trails and Wagging Tails: Dog Sledding Delight at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area. It was all about hitting the snowy trails and throwing a bone to nature in Saskatoon. They were all about making memories and soaking in the sights and sounds of WinterCity YXE. Your dough is what makes it all possible.
So, with each dime dropped and a little extra from CanadaHelps, the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas could keep the wheels turning. Throughout the week, there are various events and activities to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Indigenous individuals within the university community.
One of the highlights of IAW is the Indigenous Student Achievement Awards Ceremony, which takes place on Wednesday, March 6, at Marquis Hall. The awards honor Indigenous students for their academic achievement, community engagement, leadership, research, and resiliency. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of these students and to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
Additionally, there are opportunities for learning and growth during IAW. For example, individuals can sign up for the 2024 Level 1 Indigenous Awareness Training: The History of Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan, which will take place in Regina on April 3. This training provides valuable insights into the history and culture of Indigenous peoples in Saskatchewan, promoting understanding and reconciliation.

Has any one of us ever really seen a Tree? When we become aware of trees we may each glimpse of them to moments of spiritual vision and, identifying ourselves with the trees, become conscious of the rising of the sap; the upward thrust of life, leaf burgeoning, their consciousness of the changing seasons; we may share their passionately boisterous exuberance of life in the height of the storm, and their tranquility when at rest; with them we will enjoy the glad murmur of the ripening seed clusters when after weeks of drought the steady warm rain brings relief to thirst; and we will know that these creatures, our elder brethern, are intimately related to us in their love and hunger for life. We may even catch their enthusiasm and aspire heavenwards while still rooted in our Mother Earth and in communion with our fellow man and, tree-wise, strive to make the Earth more fruitful again.~Richard St. Barbe Baker

Bruce Gordon’s impact was felt not only in the hockey community but also as a dedicated Saskatoon Detective Sergeant, a relentless advocate for justice, and a pillar of his community. Despite facing personal challenges, Bruce’s unwavering work ethic and love for sports left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Today, we celebrate his legacy and honor his memory by embracing the lessons he taught us about personal growth, identity, and the power of positive role models.
A Life Filled with Achievements: His athletic prowess and love for hockey led him to play as a forward for the Saskatoon Blades and the Medicine Hat Tigers, where he eventually became the captain of the Blades in the early 1980s. Bruce’s leadership and dedication on the ice earned him the respect of his teammates and the admiration of the hockey community.
But Bruce’s passion for sports extended far beyond hockey. He was an all-around athlete, participating in swimming, weightlifting, cycling, and competing in national CrossFit competitions such as the CanWest Games. His dedication to fitness culminated in completing the grueling Ironman triathlon nine times, including the challenging Penticton Ironman. Bruce’s commitment to physical fitness exemplified his determination and served as an inspiration to those around him.
A Legacy of Service and Personal Growth: Bruce’s impact extended beyond the realm of athletics. As a Saskatoon Detective Sergeant, he dedicated his career to upholding justice and protecting his community. Bruce’s invaluable contributions earned him recognition, including the Exemplary Service Medal in 2004 and the Chief’s Award of Excellence in 2021. His commitment to serving others went beyond his professional duties, as he volunteered for various organizations, including PRIDE Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Road Runners Club, and the Saskatoon Sexual Assault Centre, among others.
Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Bruce pursued a law degree at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law. Despite the challenges he faced, he exemplified perseverance and personal growth by graduating in 2016. Becoming a defense lawyer, Bruce embraced the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others through the legal system. His dedication to learning and continuous self-improvement serves as a reminder that personal growth is a lifelong journey.
Fighting Pancreatic Cancer: Remembering Bruce’s Courage: Tragically, Bruce Gordon’s life was cut short by Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer on September 29, 2017, at the age of 54. In his honor, his family established the #BeLikeBruce Memorial Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, housed at the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. Each year on World Pancreatic Day, which falls on November 19, we remember Bruce’s courageous battle and contribute to the ongoing fight against this devastating disease.
The #BeLikeBruce Fitness Festival: To celebrate Bruce’s legacy and raise awareness and funds for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the #BeLikeBruce Fitness Festival was established. Combining his love for CrossFit and triathlon, the festival brings together athletes and fitness enthusiasts to participate in a series of challenging workouts. Through their participation and generous donations, the festival has raised thousands of dollars to support ongoing research, bringing us closer to finding a cure for Pancreatic Cancer.
Living with Passion and Integrity: Bruce Gordon’s story reminds us of the power of individuals to inspire and influence others. His dedication to community service, personal growth, and physical fitness exemplifies the connection between individual well-being and societal contributions. City of Saskatoon Public Engagement Survey on the Blaimore Sector Plan Amendment
The 132 hectare (326 acre) Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (within which is the South West Off Leash Recreation Area and the 60 hectare (148 acre) George Genereux Urban Regional Park might become part of the Blairmore Sector Plan. Find out what that means for these areas! What are the implications?
With your input into the questionnaire the afforestation areas could be added into the Blairmore Sector – hence the name Blairmore Sector Plan Amendment.
Included in the Natural Areas Screening reporting section is a Natural Area Screening report which gives a report- a real time snapshot in time- on the plants, the animals, as well as insects of woodlands and wetlands. There are photos, and information about what makes the natural area of the forest function, along with suggestions and recommendations from EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc. who have a specialist team that focus on the living things around us and their habitat.
There is information about the background of sector plans looking at neighbourhoods and where 70,000 people can live in new areas of Saskatoon.

The deadline is Friday July 8. Remember, this is your opportunity to make your voice count to add the afforestation areas to the Blairmore Sector Plan. When you take the time to provide feedback then there may be additional opportunities for another time to provide concerns and suggestions. The City of Saskatoon may consider the opportunity to continue the dialogue with the general public and make another public engagement offer after the summer.
