As we delve into this month-long extravaganza, we are thrilled to present the first week array of events designed to invigorate both mind and body while fostering a deep connection with nature.
Celebrate National Health and Fitness Day on June 1 by joining the ParticipACTION Community Challenge! Saturday, June 1 is National Health and Fitness Day in Canada, and the kick-off of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk. Running from June 1 to 30, the challenge encourages everyone in Canada to get active throughout June, ultimately recognizing Canada’s Most Active Community and awarding it $100,000 to support local physical activity and sport initiatives. There will also be a prize for the most active community in each province and territory, and ParticipACTION will recognize and award organizations that are championing the challenge in their communities. To help remove barriers to people getting active, we encourage you to offer active opportunities on June 1 through open houses, free programming and more! One of the jewels of our neighborhood is the unique Ashworth Holmes Park, with its expansive oval shape and accessible playground. It’s a place where families gather for picnics, where children laugh and play, and where neighbors come together to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. From the local dog park to the Mayfair Bowling Club, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this historic park. Embracing Change: A Message from Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, Eagle Ride, and Battle River Kennels
Subheading: Prioritizing Canine Safety in Unpredictable Weather Conditions
Dear Dog Sledding Enthusiasts,
In the heart of every adventure lies a commitment to safety and responsibility. With this in mind, we regret to inform you that our highly anticipated dog sledding event, scheduled for Saturday, March 30, 2024, in the afternoon, has been canceled. Everyone tried so hard after the January 13 cancellation to make it happen, but again, the weather did not cooperate. This decision was made in consultation with our dedicated kennel mushers, who prioritize the safety and well-being of our four-legged companions above all else.
As much as we were eagerly looking forward to hitting the trails with our beloved canine team, recent weather conditions have posed unforeseen challenges. With warmer temperatures followed by freezing, the trails have become hazardous for our dogs to navigate. The layer of new snow atop the ice presents slippery conditions, potentially endangering the safety of our furry friends.
We understand the disappointment that accompanies the cancellation of an event we were all eagerly anticipating. However, our foremost concern is ensuring the safety and happiness of our canine companions. We hope for your understanding and support in this decision, as difficult as it may be.
Despite the cancellation, we invite you to join us at the afforestation area for a walking tour tomorrow afternoon. This presents a wonderful opportunity to still enjoy the outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. Your presence and support mean the world to us, and we would be delighted to share this experience with you.
Looking ahead to the spring season, we have an array of exciting events lined up for our community. From the City Nature Challenge in April to Jane’s Walks in May, and Arbor Week celebrations, there are ample opportunities for you to engage with and contribute to our cause. According to Victor Trees et al, the clouds affected by solar eclipses could alter sunlight reflection and even impact local precipitation patterns. Nature India reports that these eclipses cause a substantial decrease in solar irradiance, leading to atmospheric changes such as cooling temperatures and increased humidity.
At its peak, the eclipse will cast a shadow over Saskatchewan, offering a unique opportunity for scientific observation and personal reflection. Chasing Dreams in the Snow: Frozen Trails and Wagging Tails Extravaganza

Join us for an exciting winter event at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area – Frozen Trails and Wagging Tails! On March 30, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, we invite you to embrace the beauty of nature in the heart of winter.
Experience the thrill of dogsledding through the enchanting forest trails as you glide through the snow-covered landscape. Feel the crisp air on your face and listen to the sound of wagging tails as our mushers and furry friends from Eagle Ridge and Battle River Kennel lead you on an unforgettable adventure.
However, we understand that Mother Nature can be unpredictable, especially in this year of El Niño. In the event that we do not retain the required 3 to 5 inches of snow for dogsledding, rest assured that we have a backup plan. The event may be subject to change to a walking tour, allowing you to still explore and appreciate the stunning winter scenery.
Frozen Trails and Wagging Tails is organized by Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, a dedicated group committed to preserving and enhancing these natural spaces for future generations. By participating in this event, you not only get to enjoy a unique winter experience but also support their valuable conservation efforts.

Jax, a shaggy and abandoned dog, was found at the Avalon Dog Park, but she was not just any ordinary dog. Her thick and wild coat of fur, reminiscent of a bearded collie or a Polish lowland sheepdog, earned her the nickname Phyllis Diller, after the famous comedienne. Despite her unique appearance, Jax was scared and timid, with little knowledge of basic commands. But with the help of her new owners, Sarah, she would soon undergo a transformation that would change her life forever.

As with any rescue dog, Jax had a lot of fear and uncertainty when she first came to her new home. But Sarah was patient and understanding, giving Jax the time she needed to adjust and build trust. And soon enough, Jax began to come out of her shell, revealing a playful and affectionate personality.
Jax received a cute nick name. Phyllis Diller, as she was now called, quickly became a beloved member of the family. Her shaggy coat and wild hair were no longer seen as a hindrance, but rather a source of joy and laughter. Phyllis Diller loved to play, go on long walks, and cuddle up on the couch with Sarah.
Despite her rough start, Phyllis Diller’s transformation is a testament to the power of love and patience. Whether she’s playing at the South West Off Leash Recreation Area in the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area with her dog-walking friends, or snuggled up with Sarah, Phyllis Diller is living proof that every dog deserves a second chance at happiness.
