From April 30 to May 5, 2024, enthusiasts across Saskatoon are still invited to participate in this thrilling event, celebrating biodiversity and fostering a deeper connection to our natural world.

Capturing Moments, Preserving Nature

Did you find yourself captivated by the delicate beauty of the Prairie Pasqueflower, the elusive charm of the Gray Partridge, or the playful antics of the Franklin’s Ground Squirrel? If so, your camera lens has become a portal to preserving these fleeting moments of biodiversity. Between April 26 to April 29, 2024, if you’ve captured images of these natural treasures, seize the opportunity to share them with the world. By uploading your snapshots to iNaturalist during April 30 to May 5, you contribute to a collective tapestry of biodiversity documentation.

Unveiling Nature’s Mysteries

Beyond capturing images, the City Nature Challenge extends an invitation to unravel nature’s mysteries through the identification process. In the heart of Saskatoon, a city buzzing with energy and vitality, a movement is underway. It’s a movement that celebrates not just physical activity, but also the spirit of community, inclusivity, and empowerment. At the forefront of this movement is the legacy of Don Bailey, the esteemed Father of Kinesiology in Saskatoon, whose vision and dedication continue to shape our city’s journey towards a healthier future.

Don Bailey’s contributions to the field of Kinesiology are legendary. As the founding figure of the College of Kinesiology in Saskatoon, his impact extends far beyond academia. For over two decades, Bailey also served on the board of ParticipACTION, a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting physical activity and healthy living. His passion for health and wellness inspired countless individuals and communities, leaving an indelible mark on Saskatoon and beyond. Bailey was the childhood friend of George Genereux namesake of the Genereux afforestation area.

Today, we carry forward Don Bailey’s legacy through the Saskatoon ParticipACTION Community Challenge. This exciting initiative aims to invigorate community participation and promote active living throughout our city. From sports to dancing, cycling to gardening, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and embrace. Together, we’re creating a vibrant tapestry of wellness, unity, and inclusivity that shines brightly in our beautiful city.

But the Saskatoon ParticipACTION Community Challenge is more than just a series of June events and registering group or individual ParticipACTION minutes on the app. It’s a call to action, an opportunity for every resident to become a true Saskatoon Superstar. Date and Time: NOTE This event has been moved to MARCH 30 2024. If there is 3-5 inches of snow, we can go ahead on this new date. January’s date was amid the polar vortex and way too cold.

Afternoon 1:30 – ending about 4:00 to 4:30 pm

Location: Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area

Registration: Pre-register on Eventbrite to secure your spot for this enchanting experience.

Attire: Bundle up in warm clothes, hats, and mittens to fully embrace the winter magic.

Meetup Location: Arrive west of the SW OLRA, and park in the SW OLRA parking lot. Directions provided, along with a map.

Helpful Information: No food or drink allowed in the kennel area. The trail is 2 km long (approx. 10 minutes). Sled-drawn rides require three to five inches of snow. In case of insufficient snow, a notice will be placed on Eventbrite, social media, and on-site.

⚠️ Restrictions:

Children under 3 must be accompanied by an adult.

No more than 250 lbs in the sled at once.

Note: There are no washroom facilities at the afforestation area.

NOTE: Sled-drawn rides require three to five inches of snow. In case of insufficient snow, a notice will be placed on Eventbrite, social media, and on-site, and the event will turn into a heritage forest walking tour!

Seeking an Innovative Cultural and Environmental Heritage Prairie Forest Guide App Editor

Are you a writer / editor who is passionate about environmental heritage, culture and Indigenous perspectives? We are looking for an experienced story teller editor to build a unique and comprehensive self guided tour to guide visitors through the 474 acres of greenspace located in the heart of the Midwest. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new and edit existing stories for a guide that integrates Indigenous philosophy and provides new models of how to relate to the land and restore and build relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous communities.

This project is an exciting opportunity to create a self guided tour via a smart phone that combines Traditional Ecological Knowledge, ethnobotany, Indigenous heritage and culture, and Indigenous languages. The app will be used to explore and appreciate the many species of plants and animals found in this greenspace. The app will also provide an opportunity to learn about traditional ecological practices, as well as how to care for and protect this valuable habitat.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep understanding of Indigenous perspectives and cultures, as well as a passion for the environment and its protection. Experience in developing stories, and editing existing stories is an asset. The actual programming and coding of the app is completed. We are looking for someone creative and innovative who can bring this project to life with stories, and editing existing stories. What was the task which befell St. Barbe? “Baker believed in the value of planting trees.” ~Mike Was this task was it irksome to Baker? What did he feel as he wrote over 23 books promoting the value of trees? Following his task alone with passion guided him on his solitary journey. Why did he do it?

In 1924, St. Barbe established the international organisation ~ Men of the Trees ~ (now called the International Tree Foundation ITF. This was followed by the international group: Children of the Green Earth and the Green Front Action Group.

“…I seemed to have entered the fairyland of my dreams. I wandered on as in a dream, all sense of time and space lost…buoyed up with an almost ethereal feeling of well-being, as if I had been detached from earth. I became intoxicated with the beauty around me, immersed in the joyousness and exaltation of feeling part of it all… Rays of light pierced the canopy of the forest… I had entered the temple of the woods. I sank to the ground in a state of ecstasy; everything was intensely vivid… The overpowering beauty of it all entered my very being. At that moment my heart brimmed over with a sense of unspeakable thankfulness which has followed me through the years since that woodland rebirth.”~Richard St. Barbe Baker

The International Tree Foundation set out three tasks for the forest scouts (originally called Watu wa Miti meaning Men of the Trees:
1./ To plant ten trees each year
2./ To do a good deed ever day
3./ To take care of trees everywhere

Were these tasks irksome to the forest scouts? They recognized the importance and value of the forest, and their tasks. Tree planting ceremonies, greenhouses,and deeds which saved life and property grew from this humble beginning.

During the 1930s, St. Barbe met with President Roosevelt and they started the Civil Conservation Corp to save the California Redwoods. St. Barbe then formulated three new tasks. They were;
“1./ To save the trees for posterity.
2./ To provide a magnificent backdrop where young people could meet and marvel at the beauty of the Redwoods and the planet
3./ To inspire young people to work together to hand over this legacy to future generations.

“Of course it is difficult to agree that the death of St Barbe counts for nothing. He was a unique figure whom we shall never replace. Nevertheless I feel sure that in death, as in life, he will continue to teach and to inspire us. It is up to us, his disciples and his friends, to celebrate the life and work of Richard St. Barbe Baker. It is up to us too, to carry on the fight – as tirelessly as he did in the past; to assure that his vision is realised and that his ideas live forever.” ~Goldsmith
