Uncommon Sense

I Hadn’t Heard of Charlie Kirk …

… until his assassination made the news … and I knew little of him, but since some time has passed and a number of year-end reviews have mentioned him and his wife, I now have any opinion of his character. Anyone who would marry Erika Kirk has no judgment, nor any idea of what meaningful relationships are. The behavior of his widow tells me everything I need to know about the man’s character. I will not say “may he rest in peace” as the dead need no rest, nor can they experience the same. The phrase when I was a child was “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

Please note that I do not advocate for violence of any kind, I’ll let our president do that. (Has anybody counted how many people, beside Jimmy Kimmel, that our Schmuck à l’Orange has suggest be killed?)

Texan Nat Guard Troops Sent to Chicago Labeled “Meal Team Six”

After Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (my spellchecker suggested “Hugest” as a replacement) berated all of the U.S. senior military officers for being fat, his Texas Thuggery assigned to slap Chicago around and teach it some respect showed up and, well, check out the photo … porkers all?

Not surprising from the land that invented the Chicken Fried Steak, but I’ll bet the SecWar’s face be burning right now, not so much that he didn’t have Texas Governor Greg Abbott replace all of the porkers with troops who met his standards.

(Source of Meal Team Six quip is the inestimable Jeff Tiedrich in his October 14th iteration of his blog Everyone is Entitled to My Own Opinion)

Another wag states “Operation Dessert Storm has officially begun. The 82nd Chairborn has boots on the ground, with the support of Marinara Corps, Meal Team Six, and the National Lard. Let us hope this doesn’t turn into another Battle of the Bulge. Semper Pie!” (Source: Sick Sad world, @YesYoureRacist)

I have been claiming that our sense of humor, dark though it be now, is a saving grace of our people.

Getting Exercise by Jumping to Conclusions

When Charlie Kirk was assassinated administration talking heads declared that this was clearly done by the “radical left” and/or the demonic Democrat Party. When the shooter surrendered himself (with Kash Patel claiming the FBI worked out … can he become more cartoonish?) it was established that his family was apparently deeply conservative so it wasn’t as if the shooter was steeped in “woke ideology.” Then a family member described Tyler Robinson’s as having been “moving left” and the Administrations goons jumped on that saying “See, he was groomed by the radical left.

Now, given that the family is self-described as being very conservative, we would place them somewhere on the right-left spectrum at either near far-right or actually far right. Moving leftward from there, you have the right, the more liberal-right, the center-right, the center, the center-left, the conservative-left, the left, the far left, and then the radical left.

So, “moving left” from where the family is could have been all the way left to the center-right, or … gosh! … even to the center.

Does it appear to you as it does to me that the left-right labels are of no longer any use to us. They are not descriptive and people are just more complicated than simple labels. (Antifa! Antifa! Aren’t we all against fascism?)

I wrote several times about the Charlie Kirk assassination, having never heard of the man prior to his killing. In those posts, if memory serves, I criticized people jumping to conclusions and offered no conclusions of my own other than hypothetical ones. You know, picking the low hanging fruit by criticizing Stephen Miller, Presidential Asshole-in-Chief. He wanted the Democratic Party to be labeled as a terrorist group, having not said a peep when Democrats were assaulted and even killed in Minnesota about the MAGA crowd being a terrorist group. You can make a case for that, in that whenever Trump criticizes a judge, almost a daily occurrence now, the judge receives death threats and often has to reinforce whatever security arrangements they have. That is using fear as a weapon a common trait of terrorist groups.

Remember the guy who supposedly shot Trump’s ear (and was killed at the scene so he couldn’t be interrogated)? In August 2024, the FBI described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism and noted that Thomas Crooks’s social media activity included antisemitic and anti-immigrant themes. (According to NPR “Investigators have found no threatening language on his social media accounts, according to Wells of the FBI’s counterterrorism division.”) However, the investigation has not established a definitive motive. Sound’s like Trump’s FBI. They couldn’t identify a motive, but they found some tiny comments and so it was domestic terrorism.

What are we doing people? Doing to one another and ourselves by this bizarre rash behavior?

I Wonder …

Recently Fox (sic) News fixture Jesse Waters said this: “Prices are still high. Can’t Trump just bring in some corporate executives and just say ‘Hey guys, there’s going to be a socialist revolution in this country if guys you don’t do something, please do something? Get this stuff down.’

I assume, being a Fox News commenter, that this gentleman is unaware that this is what Franklin Roosevelt did to get the Captains of Industry to accept a 90+% marginal income tax rate to help with funding the New Deal.

Roosevelt stated that he couldn’t control the Socialist Party and the labor unions without some kind of gesture like that. (This was unfortunate for the Socialist Party of America because after WW2, the GOP crushed it, then started working on all of the other unions and the opposition to the New Deal is going full bore in the Trump administration.)

And, gosh, isn’t that socialism, Jesse?

I Guess I Am Not Part of That

One of my favorite authors decried “the liberal glee” at the death of Charlie Kirk and that now the divide in this country is irreparable. The “posts” she quoted were from Twitter/X and similar sources.

This is a little like studying the sewage of the city and declaring it was made out of shit. The primary rule regarding trustworthiness of “news” is to “consider the source.” I do not participate in letter-count limited exchanges because there is no truth and certainly no wisdom on offer. The blog posts I read from “liberal” sources bent over backward decrying political violence and then went on to comment. Many offered consolation to the man’s family. This is hardly fodder for those wanting a civil war.

Since when do we consult the “man on the street” (it is a metaphor, ladies) when seeking truth or wisdom? And clearly truth seeking is not involved in the posts immediately adjacent to the event. Even our Dear Leader posted vile suppositions. Why is it that people leap to conclusions, share those, and others take the suppositions as facts? Many of the right were sure the shooter was a Democrat, an illegal immigrant, or a “trans” person. When it turned out the person wasn’t trans, there was a claim of “trans ideology” inscribed on the cartridges. When that was proved fallacious, then the shooter had a trans girlfriend, showing his ideology there. Then it was shown that there was no such girlfriend.

This is dangerous bullshit, people. How about we have a three-day moratorium on comments in such cases, including from “law enforcement agencies.” (The FBI got the markings on the cartridges wrong and put an ideological spin on their interpretation instead.) This would be like the advice to count to ten when you are angry before responding to a provocation. What we have now is haters spewing hatred, falsehoods, and worse and other claiming this is indicative of the country at large. It is not but if we continue on this path, it will be.

So, The Apologies Will Roll In Now … Or …

Since the Charlie Kirk shooting suspect has been arrested, and we are cautious as he is only a “suspect,” will the apologies roll in now for all the ass hats who were convinced it was a liberal/libtard/Democrat/trans shooter?

No?

How about some Thoughts and Prayers™, for the shooter’s family then?

The suspect is farther right than Kirk was, OMG, who would have guessed? (I did.)

One wag responded to all the calls from MAGAts for a “civil war”! Fuck, yeah! With this “It’s very hard for me to take MAGA calling for a civil war seriously when they just did that like 9 days ago because Cracker Barrel got a new logo.” (@BrianJNBA

And Trump Will …

Trump has called for expanding the number of federal agents in Washington, D.C. “to fight out of control crime.” Clearly he has no hidden agenda, right?

Oh, but then this report just flashed upon my screen:

Overall crime in the U.S. declined last year, with both violent and property crimes reaching their lowest levels in years. The statistics, published Tuesday in the FBI’s 2024 Reported Crimes in the Nation report, show a decrease in every major category, from homicide to motor vehicle thefts.

Here’s a closer look at the numbers: Violent crime in 2024 decreased 4.5% from 2023, with the steepest decline observed in murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, which fell 14.9% year-over-year. Robbery also saw a notable drop, falling by 8.9%.

Property crime went down 8.1%, the largest reduction recorded since 1961. Motor vehicle thefts declined by 18.6%, reversing the upward trend seen in 2023, when they rose by 12.6% compared to the previous year. Burglary and larceny-theft decreased as well, by 8.6% and 5.5%, respectively.

The numbers are encouraging, and also in line with expectations, according to Ernesto Lopez, a senior research specialist at the Council on Criminal Justice. “After significant increases in violent crime starting in 2020, the decline in all major crime types across all sizes of jurisdictions is promising,” Lopez told CBS News. “These trends are closely aligned with our own findings, which show crime falling last year and continuing to fall in the first six months of 2025.” (Source: Nice News, August 8, 2025)

Oh, and what will Trump do? My bet is on “fire the FBI Director for making him look bad with fake statistics.” Anyone wanna take that bet?

Republican Lies . . . Where are Our News Media Reporting on This?

In the bizarre logic of this administration, immigrants who are undocumented are all “illegal immigrants” and these “illegal immigrants,” therefore are all “criminals.” But they are selling “truthiness” as if it were fact. This sounds true, but is not.

Under the US criminal code, as the ACLU has noted: “The act of being present in the United States in violation of the immigration laws is not, standing alone, a crime.” Why? Because illegal entry is considered a misdemeanor not a felony, under 8 US Code § 1325, and is subject to civil, and not criminal, penalties. It is the “reentry of removed aliens”, under 8 US Code § 1326, that is considered a felony and subject to criminal punishment.

This outlaw administration is rounding up people they don’t like and deporting them illegally, so where are the reporters screaming bloody murder about this? Apparently many are cowering in their cubicles, their employers having been bought off by promises from Mr. Trump and his goons, promises of rewards or punishments. Surprisingly the punishments are mostly denial of access but I don’t see what that access is worth, since everything being done is observable out in the open. Plus we know The Donald craves attention, so let’s deny him that, at least the direct sort, and give him what he does not like, criticism.

But, But . . .

You are aware, no doubt, of the current scandal in which a journalist was added to a discussion group of the National Security Advisor to lay out plans to bomb targets in Yemen. Former security officials screamed bloody murder but Pete Hegseth used the Trump playbook, attacking the journalist (who, of course, didn’t add himself to the group “chat”).

“You’re talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who’s made a profession of peddling hoaxes,” an uncharacteristically angry Hegseth said about (Atlantic Editor in Chief Jeffrey) Goldberg, a well-regarded Washington reporter and editor. “This is a guy who peddles in garbage.”

Uh, Mr. Hegseth, if this journalist is so deplorable, why did your staff have his contact information on file so as to be able to add him to the group? Shouldn’t only trustworthy journalists be on such lists?

Logic rarely comes into play with Trump statements and now statements by Trump appointees. Just label anyone you don’t like as a communist, or a socialist, or a peddler of fake news and move on. Reality need not be involved.

Oh, and Hegseth is a former Fox (sic) News host, a position in which all journalists he encountered peddled in garbage by company policy, so you’d think he would be an expert in identifying such, but apparently not.

Modern Journalism Goes Off the Rails

The headline of the article blazed: “World Series: Dodgers seize control with Game 2 win over Yankees!”

What nonsense. Games 1 and 2 were played in the Dodger’s stadium . . . and the home teams are supposed to win. When I was younger, sports reporters knew better. They would make comparisons to other sports with phrases like “Dodgers hold serve” and such. So far, nothing has happened and no one has seized control. Everything is going according to form.

A lot of effort goes into having what is called “home field advantage” in playoffs in all sports. The team which is playing on its own field has an advantage in that they know the vagaries of that field much better than the “visiting team.” And they get to sleep in their own beds, eat home-cooked meals, etc. In a seven game series the team with the overall home field advantage hosts four of those seven games, the other team only three.

The key to these series is always winning a game away from home. If the Yankees had won one of those first two games, they would then have the overall home team advantage, because the first team to four wins, wins the series. If the Yankees had won one of the two, it would have three home games left, which they were supposed to win, giving them the four wins needed to triumph.

So, the Dodgers didn’t seize control of anything. They merely took care of business. If they win a game at Yankee Stadium, that would be seizing control.

Modern reporters are emphasizing drama that isn’t there, just as in politics they sell their news streams based upon a horse race which they claim is “neck and neck” whether it is or not, because the drama sells the news.
